The site of advanced Amerindian civilizations, Mexico came under Spanish rule for three centuries before achieving independence early in the 19th century. A devaluation of the peso in late 1994 threw Mexico into economic turmoil, triggering the worst recession in over half a century. The nation continues to make an impressive recovery. Ongoing economic and social concerns include low real wages, underemployment for a large segment of the population, inequitable income distribution, and few advancement opportunities for the largely Amerindian population in the impoverished southern states. Elections held in July 2000 marked the first time since the 1910 Mexican Revolution that the opposition defeated the party in government, the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). Vicente FOX of the National Action Party (PAN) was sworn in on 1 December 2000 as the first chief executive elected in free and fair elections. To be updated

¡Que Chido!

North America » Mexico » Morelos » Miacatlán
Sooo, the great Ryan Hyland rolled into town on Wednesday as he will about 6 times a year. Just to explain, you can all blame him for me being here. He was a CORE member in my LifeTeen program and then came down here to volunteer. He was here for about 4 years and he is such a Mexican (only in his heart as he is such a gringo on the outside) that he's lived in Mexico ever since. He was the one who invited my church down here to visit and then of course, I fell in love with this [View Full Entry]

Leaving london
Mexico City!!! We have finally arrived here in Mexico city. We are staying in Coyoacan, it has been a refreshing suprise amongst our excitement. Last time i came and expected this time to be dropped into this melt of kaos in the airport and the Zocalo. After a long 'crapadian' airlines flight we arrived in Mexico at 2am. We knew that and booked a hostel in a beautiful suburb away from the kaos in Coyoacan. What we didnt realise which i admit made my heart race alittle that as we were tired and being caught in the space time contiuim of [View Full Entry]

On a short day trip to Veracruz, we stopped along the way to check out where Hernan Cortez lived during his immobile times in Veracruz (when he wasn't conquering other places). Here are some of the pictures of the ruins of his and other homes in the small village. [View Full Entry]

Yucatan!

North America » Mexico » Quintana Roo » Playa del Carmen
Arrived in Cancun on 5th september...my God it was absolutely scorching!! Headed straight to Playa del Carmen as we didn't fancy staying in Cancun. Our hotel was called 'Playa del Karma' and it was absolutely gorgeous. It had a small pool and thatched roof cabanas, plus we had breakfast included which was prepared by the talented Italian chef Bepe, so we fairly landed with this one - all for about 12 euro each a night! The beach in playa was savage, beautiful Caribbean blue with white sand, so we did plenty of beach bumming and Terry got nicely scorched on the [View Full Entry]

Good day/morning Brad and I are hanging out in the hotel lobby getting a late start to the day. We had a very long 700 plus km ride yesterday. That isn't anything to long, but with 6 toll booths, winding high mountains, rock avalanches, fuel stations and a intense ride through Mexico city we are a little tardy getting on the road this morning. We really had a cross section of Mexico today. From the sprawling city of Mexico city that took us over an hour to get through doing 80 km/hr, to cactus laden mountains to jungle tropics. What a [View Full Entry]

The final frontier

North America » Mexico » Tamaulipas » Matamoros
Day 347 - Thursday 11 September We arrived into Matamoros around lunchtime and im actually surprised at how big the place is. Its far bigger than any of the other border towns I've been too but like many of the others theres absolutely nothing to do here. As we were not crossing until tomorrow morning we checked into a nearby hotel. Its an absolute dive and not cheap but will do for the night. With nothing to do I spent most of the rest of the day and evening twidling my thumbs waiting for tomorrow. [View Full Entry]

I've just gotten back from a week wandering down the Pacific coastline of Mexico and it was amazing! No, I didn't blow off uni to travel, I'm not that kind of girl. September 16th is Independence Day for mexico and as such we got Monday and Tuesday off uni so all in all Katherine and I were looking at six days of no uni and that is an opportunity too good to pass up. So Wednesday afternoon after our last class we packed ourselves up into one backpack and toddled off to the bus station to visit the wonderful worlds of [View Full Entry]

Good Day/Morning/Evening All, **Right now they've turned the lights off in the mall and we are being asked to leave (I think) we have more videos and pictures they just take too long to down load**** Brad and I are at an internet cafe at a mall in Queretaro with some very loud spanish music playing. We ended up staying in a really rough place last night in a hotel bus stop. We were warned of a double murder up the road the night before so we stayed stealth. Employed all the standard Reynolds tricks. We left there and made our [View Full Entry]

Attracting a crowd

So today/yesterday is/was the big celebreation of Mexican Independence Day. I'm not going to give you a history lesson, but basically Mexico gained independence from Spain and Hidalgo yelled at midnight the morning of Sept 16 "Viva Mexico!" So last night we started a program at 8pm where all of the sections prepared a dance or sketch and then there was a big dance that went till 2am or so. At midnight we had the Grito, which is where the act of Hidalgo yelling is redone and all of the Mexican people reply "Viva." It was all pretty cool. My kids [View Full Entry]
