Mexico Location

Chetumal, 19-01-1990. Deciding to leave the public transpotation system of the mexican transport world alone, we left Coba by foot and once we got to the highway - well it looked like a highway but with hardly any cars on it - we just put our thump out in the universal way of asking in sign language for a free ride. Despite the almost absolute absence of cars, we got a ride in no time from an american woman to Tulum. Tulum has got it own set of Mayan ruins and turned out to be a good place for lunch before [View Full Entry]

Chetumal, 20-01-1990. My hunch about these belizians staying en masse at our hotel, could very well be true. According to some mexicans we met in a bar last night most of these belizians just come across the border for all sorts of shady businesses quickly crossing back into Belize before getting themselves into all sorts of problems with the mexican police. needless to say that soon enough after we checked in, they came over to our room to check us out - any money to make from these two rednecks from Europe? Well, they couldn't possibly know that me and James [View Full Entry]

Chetumal. 21-01-1990. Giving in to James' constant moaning about how much he needs to get laid, we went to a Casa Nocturna - the mexican word for whorehouse - together with our new found "friends" from Belize. I have a strong suspicion they are slowly getting pissed of with us, i mean we keep drinking their cervezas and smoking thier cigarettes while pushing these so called business conversations to another day. We might do wise to leave Chetumal sooner rather than later!!! The casa nocturna was way out of town and what i think about the prices for the senoritas is [View Full Entry]

Villahermosa, 23-01-1990. We decided on an over night bus to Villahermosa which took eight hours so we would save money on a hotel. Two of our belizian friends came along to the bus depot their faces looking sour at seeing us off without any business done, too bad.....FOR THEM!!! James even took a whole cigarette pack out of the shirt pocket of one of them, the man really can over do things when he feels safe behind my back. Still....the cigarettes came in really handy for the long over haul to Villahermosa. We had a long discusion about putas to while [View Full Entry]

Villahermosa, 24-01-1990. We will have yet again another over-night bus tonight, to Palenque. Once again we will save ourselves a night in a hotel by travelling overnight. Visiting El Parque La venta which is a bit of a botanical garden full with huge stone heads left behind by the mayans who once ruled this part of the world before we the white explores in the name of the catolic god, brought progress in the way of deadly diseases and by the force of steel white arms like swords, to this part of the world. A small, blond lady trying to capture [View Full Entry]

Palenque/las ruinas, 25-01-1990. Palenque's heyday was from 600AD to 800 AD. It rose to prominence under Pakal, a club-footed king, he reigned from 615AD to 638 AD starting at the age of 12 years old! After him came his son Chan-Balum. The side is about 20 square km. Palenque was rediscovered in 1773 by father Ordonyez y Aquiar, a spanish priest. Pakal is represented by hieroglyphics of sun and shield. He died of old age and was burried in El Templo de los Inscipciones. All the ruins have been built without the aid of metal tools, pack animals or the wheel. [View Full Entry]

A trailer camp[.

North America » Mexico » Chiapas » Palenque
Palenque/Las Ruinas, mas tarde de la misma dia. Of course our first action of the day was, after breaky, THE RUINS, i mean it is what we came all the way out here for, right? A trailer park near the actual archelogical site was a good place for lunch and all the alternatives sort of semi-permanently living there, were nice and friendly, i talked for a long time with a spaced out - the dope must be GREAT around here!!! - girl from Canada. She made her affections for me no big secret but travelling with somebody else means adjusting at [View Full Entry]

Howler monkeys.

North America » Mexico » Chiapas » Palenque
Palenque, 27-01-1990. We managed to creep up to some howler monkeys yesterady and observe their behaviour but, most importantly, listen to them!!! It is clear to me now why they are called howler monkeys. Unfortunately the monkeys, as well as us ,got disturbewd by some american tourists who made even more noise as the monkeys did. Leaving the monkeys to the noisy americans we followed a path through the rain forest that surrounds Palenque, to a small village many miles away. We had to walk through a tropical down pour for what seemed like a long time before we got picked [View Full Entry]

San Critobal De Las Casas, 28-01-1990.A full five hours by a ramshackle bus got us to this small but very picturque town full with indigenas in their tradicional garb. These clothes must take quite a while to make and be costly, still most of these indigenas seem poor and come to this town from their villages that are scattered around San Critobal. Laden with handicrafts and vegetables they come here to sell their wares often spending whole days just sitting around and waiting for customers. Small little boys and girls running all over San Cristobal trying to sell gewing-gum for not [View Full Entry]
