Coffee on the roof after breakfast. Quite a bit of rain but sunny skies. A huge rainbow extended over one pier and the two Norwegian Cruise Line ships in port in Cozumel. Two other ships were at another pier. Lots of visitors in Cozumel today. We left at noon, and returned to Playa del Carmen by ferry. This boat took 40 minutes, about 10 minutes longer than our initial trip. We sat in the open back, got a fantastic view of Cozumel as we were leaving. The couple in front of us saw a black and white fish jump up, thought it might have been a tarpin. Back in Carmen, we headed to our hostel, The Yak, and stored luggage until check-in time. Off to our favorite Tortas y Tacos for a burrito, tacos, and drinks. ... read more

Greetings family & friends. Just when you thought it was safe to go back online, here I am! So we've had enough time now to shake the sand out of our suitcases, put away our flip flops and WAH, wash loads of laundry AND put it all away. Although "someone" had to whine about the whole life isn't fair nonsense i.e. "Isn't it bad enough that we have to come back to the freezing cold but we're expected to do laundry AND put it away"? And if you thought that was the kids complaining, you were wrong. It was me... Double WAH. And yes I would like some cheese with my WHINE (make it an aged cheddar!) While having to come back to reality is an adjustment, returning home to almost "record-breaking, freeze the ... read more

This morning we walked north along the beach past the smaller pier. There is a huge spa hotel down by this pier. More guys raking up the kelp. We wondered what they do with all this kelp, and we saw that they dig a big hole and bury it on the beach. Saw that many of the luxury hotels up in this area have sun beds, with a thick mattress, pillow, and overhanging canopy. We took our books down to the main hostel area and both grabbed a hammock. Bob was now in his element! Thought we might come back to the Yak Hostel after our time in Cozumel. Asked if there might be a quieter room. Last night, Saturday night, was very noisy, with music going until about 5am. This wasn't from within the hostel ... read more

Good breakfast included at the Hostel Yak this morning, probably the best we have had at a hostel so far this trip--coffee, rolls, papaya and pineapple, and cereal. Our hostel is very secure. We have trouble getting in and out of our gate with the key! But in our defense, we don't seem to be the only ones. 72 degrees this morning, heading to a high of 79, very pleasant for a morning walk. Not too many people out at 9:00 in the morning. This seems to be a party late, sleep late kind of town. This time I noticed several cigar shops and cigar bars in the area. Our destination this morning was the laundry. Your laundry is weighed and you are charged by the kilogram. Cost for us to be slightly over $3, quite ... read more

Off to Playa del Carmen this morning. The one hour bus ride cost 62p per person. We had reservations at Hostel Yak. This turned out to be a very clean, modern place, with fast WiFi, fridge, hotplate, and included breakfast. It contained a dormitory area and studio rooms (which is where we stayed). The lounge area in the dormitories is open to everyone, and contained some comfortable seating and hammocks! We found the city very clean, with many tourists, bikers, restaurants, coffee shops. The hostel lady told us that the shops along Avenue 10 were cheaper and geared more to the locals, while Avenue 5 was geared to the tourists. The beach is fairly close to the hostel, about two blocks away. We found a spot for grilled tacos for lunch, then walked down to the ... read more

Playa del Carmen was a little pricey. I suppose that's to be expected when it is such a big destination for short vacations, or owning a vacation home/condo. That being said it still felt cheaper than home. Maybe my mind wasn't fully wrapped around the conversion, but if you can get a decent breakfast with a large glass of mixed juice for MXN149 it's got to be a good deal...right? Well, everyone told us that it would be the most expensive area we'd be in in Mexico. We did enjoy walking beyond 5th Ave (the main tourist road) and hitting some of the smaller shops. We were able to eat much cheaper getting a stack of tortillas from the local tortilleria for MXN5 that would last us for two meals, and getting 2 oranges, a tomato, ... read more

As the title eludes to, we have once again started travelling. This time with no intention of working on the road, but leaving the option open in case a wonderful opportunity presents itself. For those of you that we didn't have a chance to meet up with before we left, sorry about that. There just never seems to be enough time to get everything done right. We've begun in Central America, since we wanted somewhere warm, and with Ashley's studies having been about Latin America we figured it was about time she got to see more of it. We plan to see many ruins and beaches and take our time wherever desirable. We started our travels with a holiday in Playa Del Carmen since it seemed well traveled and we wouldn't have to work too hard ... read more

"Don't worry about a thing, Cause every little thing gonna be all right. Singin' "Don't worry about a thing, 'Cause every little thing gonna be all right!"(Bob Marley) Ahhh, tropical vacation withdrawal. Many of you know the stages of it. You walk onto the plane in your sandals from your tropical vacation 'cause it's still 85F in paradise even though you know you're heading home to the frozen tundra, but you are not going without a fight. Then reality hits, you walk off the plane in your woolen socks and parka and are nearly blinded by this white thing outside called "snow". You shiver incessantly in the cab ride home convinced you are fully Mexican after almost 2 weeks away, and you swear you can't remember it being this cold before? Then you slip slide up ... read more

"The problem is not about the problem. The problem is your attitude about the problem. Do you understand?" (Captain Jack Sparrow) Hola from the sunny shores of Playa...(OK I'd be lying, not so sunny on Weds morning. We had a lot of rain this morning, but hey in 11 days this was the first day of rain). So nananana! We enjoyed the most beautiful night on Tues. night after a day of just putzing around. Martha had made an early spaghetti dinner for the kids which hit the right spot for them. It was warm so a walk was in order. Al & I felt like getting out, so we went back to this newly opened French/Mexican cafe that we have now declared THE best rotisserie chicken in Playa. It's owned by Fabio, a ... read more

'Time is precious, waste it wisely". ~ Well we are making good use of our time by wasting it! All is fine here. I'm recovering from my zip line adventure just fine, better than expected. In fact Sat. night I was surprised at how spry I felt given the injury. The beneficial healing effects of ice. Sunday morning though both my back and left leg were sore too. You know it's kinda weird, I feel as if I hit a tree!? Oh yeah right, I DID hit a tree. Stupid zip lining idea... All in all I'm fine, the bruising is minimal, and I've been getting around Playa like I normally do. Mom has still been dealing with the aches and pain of a flu. I try to fuss over her but she keeps claiming "this ... read more
