This morning we said goodbye to Nicaragua and flew to Mexico via San Salvador. We are overnighting in Cancun, on our way to Cuba and the next step in our amble through the Americas. We're both feeling the approaching end to our trip, in just six weeks time... Since I last wrote we spent three nights on Ometepe Island in Lake Nicaragua, where it was mid dry season; windy, desolate and stunningly beautiful. Ometepe is two volcanoes which thrust out of Lake Nicaragua and are joined by a land bridge forming a single island. Volcán Concepción is just over 1600 metres while its little brother Maderas is just under 1300 metres, and the land bridge is not much above lake level. It all makes for a very scenic ferry crossing and an interesting place to explore. ... read more

Good flight to Cancun, landed early. Got through customs quickly with a green light so no luggage check. We were on the bus to downtown Cancuun ten minutes before we should have landed. ADO Autobus tickets were $5 each, and the bus left just after we got on. Good connection! We had reservations at our hotel, Hostel Mundo Jovan on Avenita Uxmal, just a couple blocks from the bus depot. Nice bright, colorful room with A/C and super-fast Internet. Bob was the tour guide and we were off on a walk around the area. First stop was the park Parque Palapas. Lots of food stands along the edge, many tables. Bob found this area written up online when planning our trip. We were entertained by a guitarist and an accordionist. Lots of pigeons, a kid's playground, ... read more

Yolla satoi vetta ja huoneen lampotila laski illan 28 asteesta aamuksi 25 asteeseen. Tapoin yolla lattialla olleen kovakuoriaisen. Talla kertaa olin ottanut paikan etupenkilta - siita nakikin jotain. Matkan aikana olo parani sen verran, etta kun Cancunissa bussiasemalla taksit pyysivat mielestani liikaa hintaa, niin kavelin reilun kilometrin matkan hotellille. Lampomittari naytti 36,5, joten uudestaan matkaan. Olin katsonut eilen, etta markkinapaikan lahella pitaisi olla kirjakauppoja. En loytanyt niita joit... read more

Cancunin jarvessa on tosiaan krokotiileja - siella uiminen on kielletty. Aamupalalla tapasin jenkkipariskunnan. He olivat lahdossa iltalennolla Kuubaan. Kuvasin paivalla keltaisen lahikaupan seka kuntosalin (jota kavin vilkaisemassa) ja paperikaupan (jossa otin valokopion maahantulokortista). Valtin kuuminta keskipaivan paistetta ja lahdin vasta klo 15:n maissa katsomaan hotellialuetta. Jäin kyydistä siinä kohtaa, jossa oli eniten kauppoja. Söin munakasta ja kävin rannalla. Kastelin varpaat.

Sain nukuttua liki kuuteen. Lorvin sitten kylla huoneessa. Aamupalaa lahdin etsimaan keskustasta. Kaupasta ostin vesipullon. Suihkun jalkeen lahdin bussiajelulle. Otin paivaunet. Kävin syömässä Parrillas-nimisessä ravintolassa. En jaksanut syödä kana-annosta loppuun. Tähtitaivas näkyi hyvin.... read more

Yöllä satoi.... read more

We took a first class bus from Merida to Cancun and were met at the bus station by our Norwegian friend Gunlaug that we had previously met in El Salvador and traveled to Guatamala with. We took a taxi to our accommodation which was a room in a private apartment next to the Plaza America's shopping mall. We met our host and then headed out for lunch at a restaurant he recommended nearby. The food was great and we enjoyed catching up with Gunlaug. We spent the afternoon looking around the market downtown and enjoying a drink on the roof terrace of Gunlaug's hostel. After breakfast the next day we went to the supermarket to buy food for lunch as we were planning to visit the beach. While we were sitting at the bus stop the ... read more

.....there was this lady who thought it might be a good idea to go to South America and work with some kids. Along the way she met lovely families, made lots of new friends, saw fantastic animals/mountains/ancient sites, had some scary moments, got lost a lot, spent heaps of money, walked, walked, walked, fell over a couple of times, dropped things, laughed till she cried, felt sick, felt strong, and was amazed but grateful for all of the opportunities that came her way. She missed her children and her friends back home very much, but never enough to make her want to end the journey before its time. On the very long flight back home, images of the hugs and kisses she would receive (especially from her little grandson), filled her with anticipation. How could 3 ... read more

So my darling daughter should know better than to bait her poor old mum, especially when it comes to writing blog stuff. Apparently the assumption being that because it took 9 days for my last blog to hit the airwaves, and I only have 9 days left of my big adventure once I hit Cancun, you guys would be lucky to get another blog out of me. Hahahahahahaha! I have at least 2 good ones left in me yet! Let me tell you about the last 4 days……. School finished…..but the school edition is coming out next. I then wandered back to my home for lunch and then made my way to Playa Mann to work on my ‘tan’. The weather wasn’t too bad and I always had fun people and sea lion watching. Did my ... read more
