Aamulla cenote Zaci. Bussilla Cancuniin. Hostellin varaus ei ollutkaan kunnossa mutta järjestyi toinen hostelli läheltä. Käytiin rannalla ja illalla keskusaukiolla.... read more

Kävin katsomassa hotellialueella Maya-museota. Täällä ei tule yölläkään kylmä. Keskusaukiolla oli illalla mukavasti väkeä ja elämää. Aterioin siellä. Olutta saa kaupoista vaihtelevasti. Joissakin myydään, joissakin ei.... read more

Lensin taas tänne kun sain lennot 400 eurolla. Majoituin hostelliin keskustassa. Latasin Meksikon liittymään lisää saldoa. Ostin koko matkan bussiliput kun varauduin pääsiäisviikon liikenteeseen. Päivän päätteeksi kalaa ja olutta.... read more

Cancun never came close to making our bucket lists and it held little attraction to us. The only reason we found ourselves here was that we needed a neutral country between Cuba and the United States; Mexico filled that niche more cheaply than the Bahamas and Cancun seemed the safest and cheapest option. "Blackpool in the tropics" is the image that came to my mother's mind when we told her where we were going. She's never been but she wasn't far off the mark. I hate to say it but Blackpool may have a little more charm. Cancun is just a horrible place. It has a crocodile infested lagoon and a twenty seven kilometre stretch of nothing but hotel after ugly hotel. It has dozens of beaches but most of these are either small or almost ... read more

Today was another long 13 hour day with a 300km drive to Cancun for a two night stay firstly stopping at Chichen Itza. Around 600 AD, Chichen Itza was one of the largest and most prominent Maya city and is now the best-preserved Maya site on the Yucatan peninsula. It was recently declared one of the New Seven Wonders of the World with various different architectural styles seen. Its most famous landmarks include the Temple of Kukulkan (“El Castillo”), the Ballgame Court, the Platform of the Skulls, the Temple of the Jaguar, the Observatory, the One Thousand Columns, and the Sacred Cenote. Maybe because we have had ruin overload it was hard to fully appreciate the site especially with wall to wall stalls of "authentic" arts crafts. What is impressive is the Mayan understanding of mathematics ... read more

Olah, So, first step in elective- Cancun, probably the most unMexican City in Mexico, but nonetheless a great stopover in my adventure. So I arrived into Cancun on the Monday and got a shuttle bus to the bus station where my hostel was close by to. I was lucky to have met someone in the airport who was going to the same hostel so it worked out ideally. Stayed in this hostel called Hostel Ka'beh in downtown Canoun, which was a really great hostel- perfect for meeting people and really traveller friendly. The flight was long 11hours, GMT-6 so I hit the Hay a bit after tea. Cancun is separated into 2 areas- the tourist bit and the downtown area. The tourist bit is along the beach front and is made of resort after resort and ... read more

We got back to the snow and cold of Minnesota on March 4! We really enjoyed our trip, met some nice people, and ate some excellent food. Unfortunately we couldn't get our photos into the blog as we went along, but they are now there. Some good memories! This is Bob. I get to tell my story. Margie never says anything negative. No matter how much we read or prepare there are always surprises when we travel. I do not like large cities and did not look forward to going to Valladolid and Merida. Valladolid was the high spot on the trip (February 10) and we shot many pictures. In both cities we stayed in hostels very close to the center of town in very clean rooms with private bathrooms for about $25 per night. Many ... read more

Took the bus today (21p, $1.50 total) to the hotel zone. This is the island spit that wraps around the north and east sides of Cancuun. Once we got out to the beach we walked about five miles. It's a little tricky getting to the beach in some areas. The hotels are very close together, and they don' t like you walking through the lobby unless you are staying there. But we did get out through one hotel just as we were being asked if we were guests there! Walked by some very exclusive high-rise hotels. Beautiful blue waves lapping the shore. We got back to the road via a public walk. Found a little stand, among some very expensive restaurants, with great fish tacos and drinks (100p). Found a shaded spot to read on the ... read more

Very peaceful to read on our private balcony after breakfast. Later in the morning we headed out to explore Isla Mujeres. Taxi to Puerto Juarez (40p, $2.80), then a ferry to the island (300p, $21 for two tickets, including return). We sat on the open top deck for the half hour ride, and were entertained by a Mexican singer with his guitar. There are many more scooters and golf carts than cars on Isla Mujeres. Narrow stone streets, colorful buildings, many craft shops for the tourists. The island is quite narrow, with just a few streets. Easy to walk around in a short time. We walked out to the east shore. Gorgeous aqua blue water, waves splashing up on the rocks, cool sea breeze. Several very private hotels here. Took many photos. The beach has very ... read more

After breakfast we went to the rooftop to read. A short, quick, hard rain. Very pleasant to hear the patter on the cover of the rooftop. The Yak Hostel was very clean, the maids always washing the floors. After the rain, we headed to the bus depot to get our tickets to Cancun. Buses left every 20 minutes, so we just got them when we arrived. Tickets less than $5 each, one hour ride. We had reservations for our last three days in Cancun at the Bed and Breakfast Garden Hostel. We had a good walk and got to the general area by Mercado 28, actually about a block away. We then asked three different people where the hostel street was and were sent in three different directions. Bob checked his map and felt we were ... read more
