Those of you who know me realize that being on time is NOT exactly one of my strong points. The whole concept of operating under “Mexican time” was pretty appealing to me… One thing I didn’t count on however, was just how much time it takes to maneuver in a city that has little or no access for people with disabilities. One of the organizations I will be working with throughout this year provides services and job-skills training for people with various physical handicaps. Every morning, I catch the Route 5 bus from my home and make my way to Calvario church downtown. From there, I wait in the dark early morning for the ALEM bus to arrive. (ALEM is the title of our organization, and it stands for Autonomía, Libertad en Movimiento, or Autonomy, Liberty, ... read more

Hola Todos! Bienvenidos a las viajes de Enchilada y Chimi! (aka. Steven's first week in Mexico!) Our story begins at Terminal 2 in Mexico City where our leading man, a gringo on the outside but Mexican on the inside, is surprisingly tapped on the shoulder by a girl who he thinks is a stranger...possibly another traveler. Yet, little did he know that his love, a recent Mexico resident, had journeyed to the big city to surprise him and bring him safely to her home, Cuernavaca. The finger on his shoulder was hers, and after a double-take or two, they floated on Cloud 9 over to the bus terminal. The two novios had reunited at last after three months and they were now ready to explore the beautiful country from which she came from, the same country ... read more

From Chiapa De Corzo we dropped down from the hills into a vast and hot frying pan of a plain to an overnight stop in Cintalapa. A gentle climb out into the hills the next morning was topped off with a gorgeous downhill roll through protected forestland with glimpses of the Pacific Ocean far below. We emerged in Oaxaca state, on a coastal plain, and took a bus to avoid a stiffling slog along a flat and busy road. The following day saw us back on the bikes and heading for the hills once again. As we climbed, the woodland was changing; thinning and drying out - tall, thin candelabra cactus spiked the hillside and later, crops of agave cactus crept into the scenery. We passed mezcal factories - at first just a few wooden vats ... read more

Que tal todos? Yesterday I took a stroll around the city center after saying goodbye to the other volunteers who took the bus back to Miacatlan. I went to the Cathedral, Jardin de Borda, and two other churches near the center. Then I walked for an hour uphill thinking I could walk all the way home. On the bus it's a 30 min ride from the center to my house, soooo walking made me realize just how far I live from the center. I got a good work out though! This next weekend is the anniversary of NPH. It's the 50-something anniversary. All the kids here in Cuernavaca will be bused to Miacatlan and we'll celebrate there. Also, even more exciting than my cultural walks and the anniversary, Steven (my boyfriend in case you didn't know) ... read more

I missed out on going to Las Estacas two times before and I´ve always regretted it because everyone goes on and on about how beautiful it is. We took two small vans on our excursion, just enough room for the fifteen or so people who signed up to go. Wary of the backseat, I chose to sit in the middle of the van, since last time we rode in one, we got the heck knocked out of our heads as we cruised over a speed bump. At first we all laughed as we held our head, but after a minute or so, after some of us saw blood, we realized we might have slight concussions, or at least short neck syndrome. This trip would be different though. Las Estacas was not quite as far this time, ... read more

Hola mi familia y mis amigos, It’s quite depressing to write half of a blog entry and then have your computer shut down, and poof…it’s gone. Sooo…here is my second attempt to give you all a RSVOARLLU (Really Short Version of a Really Long Life Update), however I'm giving a fair warning that there is a 99.9% chance that this is going to be a RLLU (Really Long Life Update). O where to begin...? Thank God for antibiotics. They became my best friend after a week of being ill, and my life is back to normal! Well kind of. I moved to Casa Nolan (my permanent residence) and the other volunteers moved to Miacatlan to take on their positions as caretakers for the younger pequenos. It was sad to see them leave, but when they get ... read more

Another bus ride on the way to what I think should definitely be one of the seven wonders of the world! We left for Teotihuacan by way Mexico Distrito Federal (A fancy way of saying Mexico City) pretty early in the morning, our heads still spinning from silver fever at Taxco. The two-hour trip took no time at all, excepting of course, for those travelers not yet used to the gentle swaying of the bus ride. Again, several people decided a safe course of action would be to have a "catch-all bag" for any wayward breakfast meals refusing to stay centrally located in the safety of one's stomach. Our tour guide from the school made sure we drove past some of the more popular travel destinations Mexico D.F. had to offer, including the Plaza Mayor, where ... read more

It's pretty early and I can't sleep due to the chickens and dogs that seem to like the early morning hours, so I thought I'd catch up with my writing. I should be pretty tired though, given the weekend I had traveling around Morelos. The weekend began with a trip to Taxco, known for its scenic hillscapes and an abundance of silver products. Taxco is a steep city, built on the side of an even steeper mountain. The white cement houses and red-tiled roofs fill the horizon with a vista reminiscent of Greece. From a distance the city takes on a unreal aspect, as though it were a city floating on the clouds. While our Spanish language school offered excursions to this city, many of us at school thought we might have better luck if we ... read more
