the rest of yesterday continued to be wonderful! a momentary setback occurred when, at lunch, tina served us a meal that was only a little bit more mexican. therefore, spicy. remember who doesn´t like spicy foods, at all? ..oh yeah, me. i dunno. i tried it. i wanted to like it. but i just don´t get satisfaction out of eating a food that hurts my mouth. i got really embarrassed that i couldn´t eat it and also really mad at myself because i had been doing so well with trying (and liking!) everything new. that´s such a huge step for me, and for it not to continue made me pretty frustrated. oh well. it wasn´t that big a deal. tina gave me something else to eat (my eating wasn´t the problem, it was that i was ... read more

things are going really, really well. honestly, for the first time i´m relaxed, and happy here. what they tell you about culture shock isn´t a lie - i have definitely been going through it. i hope its over for now and i can enjoy being here! it really is fun :) last night was great! leslee, lauren and i planned to go meet up at la galleria (a mall/movie theater thing) with a lot of furman people, but we had some sort of miscommunication and didn´t meet up. but, we got there, walked around, and everything was closing except for a music store (which we spent some time in.. timony you´ll love a picture we took!) and then when that closed, we wanted ice cream, but everything was pretty much closed, except for starbucks. so, like ... read more

things are going well. a little slow and sleepy today, but well. yesterday i had my first mexico hoy class. it was really interesting because the professor talked about what we were observing about mexican culture - the driving, trash, machismo (the thinking that men are superior to women), etc. after that, we went home and had la comida, and then a nap (of course..) and then we went to café social, which was at a restaurant where a bunch of students from universidad internacional went to talk a little. it was fun. after that we went to emily, lindsay and lindsay´s house to watch orgullo y prejuício (pride & predjudice).. they had bought it from the falluca, so it was pirated, with spanish subtitles. pretty funny, especially when the subtitles were completely wrong. and when ... read more

¡hola hola! i have a few minutes so i´ll write down what´s been going on. the ¨bus tour¨of cuernavaca didn´t happen - somehow i heard wrong. instead it was a lot of museuming, which was okay, but i don´t really think precolombian art is my thing. also, standing for hours on end isn´t my thing either, haha. then, that night was the night of the problems getting into the house. :) on saturday, we were planning on going to tepoztlán (to climb a pyramid) but it was rainy and gross (as it was all weekend)... so instead we went after that, we went to the ¨falluca¨which is somewhat of an underground black market. i guess i didn´t explain what the falluca was, last time, haha. i at first thought we were being brought there to buy ... read more

i only have 7 minutes left in this internet cafe in downtown cuernavaca, so i´m gonna make this quick.. last night: pizza at marco polo with the whole group. fun! after that, i was pretty tired, but the majority of the group decided to go out dancing, etc.. hah. soon after they left, it started pouring. it turns out that when lauren and leslee got back around 2:20, they couldnt get their key to work in the front door. therefore, because they didnt want to wake our padres up, they decided it would be a good idea to hoist lauren over the barbed wire fence and throw rocks at my window, and stomp on the roof, right above my head. actually, leslee decided this was a good idea. typical. just kidding, i love my roomie. but ... read more

wow. so, here i am, studying abroad. there´s no better way to do this than to just dive in and explain what´s going on and how i got here! yesterday morning, leslee and i left our hotel in charlotte and headed to the airport. we met up with our group and got on the plane to mexico city!! as soon as we got there, it was a lot of hurry up and wait, as most trips are.. we went through immigration fine, but in customs, i pushed the button and got a red screen, which means they had to go through my bag. it was a little confusing, but everything went fine. for the rest of the day, i battled my luggage (and lost, most of the time)... but you need a bunch of stuff when ... read more

We finally arrived after what seemed a mammoth journey and we´ve had a fantastic couple of days with the Limons (Sam´s old host family) in Cuernavaca. Jings, what an impression you have made on this family Sam, not an hour goes past without a sudden "I LOVE SAM!!!" being yelled from somewhere. Mum, you could not have chosen a better present than the pot purri - apparently Eric had tried to smuggle some gum nuts back the last time but he was stopped and it was his biggest regret. After giving them all the presents, and reading the note, Eric had tears in his eyes. It was muy especial. Eric wanted to keep Sam´s translation of our speech, it sits, pride of place in the lounge. And what a lounge it is. Never have i seen ... read more

The summer between my 4th and 5th year at UW-Eau Claire I lived in Cuernavaca, Mexico for 2 months. Cuernavaca was a very fun place to take a summer of classes and learn some Spanish. I will say that in comparision with my program in Valladolid, you need to make sure that you push yourself to learn the language in Cuernavaca. It would have been very easy for me to not speak Spanish at all. If I was at home, around town, or with students it seemed that learning Spanish was not the primary goal. However, if you are going to Cuernavaca to emerse yourself in Spanish you need to understand that you are incharge of your own learning and that you are incontrol of how much Spanish that you use / learn. Cuernavaca is a ... read more
