I'm normally not the type of person to 'stop and smell the roses'. I rush thru art museums way too fast. I like to get to point A to point B as quickly as possible. But the Jacaranda trees in Mexico take my breath away. I could sit and admire them for hours. They are simply some of the most amazing trees around. They produce this little purple or blueish flower that is magnificent. I've never seen anything like it. They are found not only in Mexico but also in South & Central America, and the Caribbean. Pretoria, a city in South Africa, is nicknamed the Jacaranda City because of the numerous Jacaranda trees there. The local college even has a legend that if one of the flowers from the tree falls on your head you'll ... read more

On a recent trip to San Miguel de Allende I read about www.travelblog.org in a magazine. I love to travel and I love to write (although, normally just for myself!) so I thought, why not? I haven't been to tons of places but I'll write/journal/blog about my experiences so far. I hope that they are useful and insightful and I look forward to reading about everyone else's experiences and discovering new places. More to come, Stephanie ... read more

If you've ever been to San Miguel de Allende you know you'll definitely need a good pair of shoes. You do a lot of walking in San Miguel de Allende and the streets are cobblestone. They are extremely slick especially in the rainy season. So, a good pair of shoes is a must. On my last trip, I traipsed around in a pair of four inch heels for most of the trip. Luckily for me, I had the assistance of my fiance, Julio, to help me keep my balance and from breaking my neck. What's a girl to do? You can always go for athletic shoes during the day. They’ll provide the support you need but if you are like me they can cause your feet to become extremely hot. Also, on a night out on ... read more

We love Mexico. Arrived in Guanajuato on Monday March 24th. We were welcomed by Sigfrido and Janet, and their two sons Tzintzun and Sereno, the Aguilar-Izzo family. Sigfrido is a master of clown theater, and he and Janet are an inspiring and moving artistic force in the Guanajuato community, drawing artists, mathematicians, and established musicians into their magical circle of movement theater. We made our home base at their imaginatively constructed house on a hill in Valenciana, at an old mine, where what was once a huge water tank has been transformed into an outdoor ampitheater. Each day was filled with activities. Because Tzintzun and Sereno have been homeschooled for a number of years now, the Aguilar-Izzo family gave us a marvelous model for interactive experiential learning. In addition to the constant flow of rehearsals at ... read more

Alright Gringos Last leg of my trip has now comenced. Mexico, or more specifically Celaya, a largish town and hour or so outside of Mexcio City. I am currently living with my Uncle Paco, his wife Koko. their son, also named Paco and daughter Veroncia. Pictures too follow. Theres also two large kinda podgy dogs and we all live very happily in their beautiful marble floored, multi-on-suite-roomed maid attended remote contolled garaged house. We dont have a pool or anything , but hey, you pay peanuts you get shit. The town itself is kinda odd. it has an old historic centre with your standard large market, genorous sprinkilng of churhes, many statues and oldy worldy looking buildings (see photos). But recently theyve introduced a large flyover highway thing allwoing a quick route to the other cites ... read more

Closing in on One Year Hi everybody. It’s been awhile since we checked in. What can I say? Life is so relaxing and beautiful down here we couldn’t drag ourselves to the computer to give you an update. We have been here for 8 months now and it’s been absolutely great. San Miguel has carved itself into our list of favorites. Now it reads, favorite city: Paris, favorite country: Thailand, favorite place to live: San Miguel de Allende. Between the culture, the weather and the friends we have made, this place is very hard to leave and some of our friends have been scheming to keep us here. Our initial plan was just to be here for a couple of months and then go to Argentina. Then we were introduced to a very sweet house sitting ... read more

The small city of Guanajuato made quite an impact on us as we approached it. The taxi went through a number of tunnels and the city was all cobblestone and steep hills. We were dropped on the street and sent up some stairs to Casa Bertha. We walked to a quiet plaza and were pointed the right way by an internet cafe guy. He also mentioned Casa Pita around the corner so we went there first. The lady was nice and spoke English and her house was beautiful with lots of tiles and ornaments. We accepted a charming room with a balcony for P$450 (US$43) but soon realised that she lied about the cable. She had said there were 61 channels but we only found 8 free channels. Confronting her she started with 'I will have ... read more

Well here I go again. Rereading the blog I wrote from Guananjuato I was surprised that I hadn´'t mentioned 2 other items. I arrived at the Centale la Autobus ( always found away from the center of the town )around 3pm and following Lonely Planet directions found the city bus to carry me INTO town about a 20 minute ride. I mentioned that the town was in a valley but what I neglected to say was that we had to drive through three different tunnels to enter the city. The first took 18 seconds ,the 2nd took 8 seconds and the 3rd took 39seconds. These were for the roads leading into town . There are additional tunnels and subterranean streets ( dried up river beds actually) for leaving town. I did say the valley was impressive. ... read more

As you can see I have moved on in my journey. Guadalajara is an interesting place and it was a great place to begin the adventure . However it is a big city and one does get tired of big cities. So I escaped, with a young woman from Switzerland ,on a day trip to Lake Chapala .Wow what a beautiful sight that lake was. Nestled in the hills with mist rising off it Alex said it reminded her of Lucerene . Ajijic is charming with it's cobbled streets and very laid back atmosphere. The huge walled areas were impressive as well. Peeking inside any chance I got was revealliñg about how the wealthy spend their time at the lake ! It is a pretty place and we spent a fair bit of time walking along ... read more

January 2008 Patzcuaro, Michoacan, Mexico Photos: http://picasaweb.google.com/Ches.Alli/Chapter6NCToMexico It's been 3 months since we last wrote. What happened? We've been on the move constantly it seems without a set time to sit and write with an electrical connection. Anyway, here we are in Patzcuaro in the state of Michoacan listening to KUNM online at our campground, the Hotel Villa Patzcuaro with both electricity and internet. This is a beautiful spot next to a quaint town known for its many artisans and we should be here into the new year. Back to the travel log and to October 7 when we left Allison's mom after a wonderful long and relaxing visit. We headed to Florida to visit Ches's mother, Sistee, who lives in Stuart. Now lets' face it - neither of us cares much for Florida. It is ... read more
