Max said it best: Papa, the Grand Canyon is amazing, but our home is even better. A harrowing ending to this part of the expedition, as I will explain. The last few days (before the chaos) were spent in the verdant hills of the Tennessee Smokies and Virginia's Shenandoah National Park. We saw black bears, took a bike trip past 19th century cabins and old baptist churches, and discussed the Civil War. We listened to the cicadas, sat around the fire and film-interviewed each other about the trip. Sweet to hear the thrushes. Then we hit the road for home at last. It began with a small mishap and escalated. About two hundred miles up the road from Shenandoah, after winding up and down numerous hills, we realized we didn't have Olga's laptop computer. We called ... read more

Although we are sprinting now through the last week of our expedition, we are enjoying some of the great surprises of the trip. After stopping in eastern Colorado to visit the site of the 1864 Sand Creek Massacre of a peaceful Cheyenne encampment, we went to Lake Scott, Kansas, and found ourselves sneaking down the highway always a few hours ahead of the tornado and hailstone weather. Kansas and Oklahoma sweetened our way with beautiful prairie grass, lakes and plains, but we really surprised ourselves when we fell in love with Arkansas. We stopped in Mountain View at the State Park, which is one of the great secrets of the US. Like the zocalos of Mexican pueblos, there was music to greet us in the Mountain View town square. Every corner had a band of fiddlers ... read more

As we turn our trailer Eastward, we must collect our thoughts about this journey, and especially what is has meant to the kids. But that will take time. When Max was hiking in Bryce Canyon he told us that his eyes had been hungry before the trip, and at Bryce they felt full. We wish that every family we know can find a way to sleep under the stars like nomads sometime. Zoya and Max are writing away. Preparing for presentations to their classes in NY will be a good gathering and processing time. Some photos here reflect recent experiences in Utah, the UK and Colorado. To catch you up: The show (Woody Sez) went beautifully in Brighton, which is a marvellous seaside English town. The kids and Olga took a day trip to London and ... read more

Learning As We Go
May 12th 2008

We arrived in Belfast last week, and found a "black cab," which means an ex-IRA man, to show us around West Belfast. In actuality, we believe, he was just a tattooed fella who could tell a good story, but we learned all about "The Troubles," and saw many of the stunning political murals on both sides of Shankill and Falls Roads, in addition to the 60-foot wall which is still standing between Catholic and Protestant neighborhoods. After this, Zoya interviewed Diane, who seeks out and works with some of the underground muralists. Zoya and Max are finding some surprising through-lines to our expedition (the political mural-art in Mexico and Ireland). Now we have moved to Brighton, where Papa performs in "Woody Sez," and the kids are working as publicity agents, handing out flyers each day on ... read more

Learning As We Go
April 30th 2008

Hello all. Our past few weeks have included time in California, where we camped in Malibu while Andy went to rehearsals and recording sessions for "Woody Sez," a sumptuous passover seder at Paul and Jacki's in La Jolla, and magical boating and hiking in Joshua Tree (CA) the Grand Canyon, Lake Powell (AZ), Zion Canyon and Bryce Canyon(UT). Matzah never tasted so good as it does after a good long backpack into a canyon. We are now on the Navajo reservation, and will be driving into Hopi villages today. Max has just given us a presentation on the Native American Cliff-Dwellers, the Anasazi. Zoya begins her study of Native American pottery this morning, after completing a draft of her History of Mexican Leaders. Tonight we will camp in Canyon de Chelley, a National Monument Area which ... read more

Can it be that we have made it all the way across from the Atlantic to the Pacific towing that damn trailer? And we still haven't figured out how to get the hot water running in it. Arrived at Paul and Jacki's house last night, and they took us out for Sushi. The view of the Pacific from the terrace is sumptuous. We haven't had showers like these in months. The kids are asking their father why he didn't decide to become a heart surgeon. The reports on Mexican History are coming along. Yesterday Max saw a Red Diamondback Rattlesnake slithering slowly past us on the Canyon Trail in Agua Caliente! Papa's teeth flew out when we approached the airport in Phoenix, but no problem for the dentist in Mexico! So far they are still intact. ... read more

Learning As We Go
April 3rd 2008

We love Mexico. Arrived in Guanajuato on Monday March 24th. We were welcomed by Sigfrido and Janet, and their two sons Tzintzun and Sereno, the Aguilar-Izzo family. Sigfrido is a master of clown theater, and he and Janet are an inspiring and moving artistic force in the Guanajuato community, drawing artists, mathematicians, and established musicians into their magical circle of movement theater. We made our home base at their imaginatively constructed house on a hill in Valenciana, at an old mine, where what was once a huge water tank has been transformed into an outdoor ampitheater. Each day was filled with activities. Because Tzintzun and Sereno have been homeschooled for a number of years now, the Aguilar-Izzo family gave us a marvelous model for interactive experiential learning. In addition to the constant flow of rehearsals at ... read more

Learning As We Go
March 16th 2008

We have worked our way from Carlsbad Caverns to Phoenix, stopping in Las Cruces for a lovely meeting with the Zeitlin/Kelter family. Some thrilling moments: The Macdonald Observatory last week, the Living Desert Museum, and hearing a little Teirstein music on National Public Radio in Las Cruces. At White Sands we waded through sand dunes and even sledded down a few. Sadly, in Arizona we began to realize that our dog Jenny is fatally ill. The vets here in Phoenix did an ultrasound and found a tumor near her heart, so we will face some difficult decisions ahead. We are with good friends here, Uriel Grunfeld and Moshe and Pam, who have put us up while we rush the dog here and there. We may have to postpone our Mexico trip, now ticketed for March 24th. ... read more

Learning As We Go
March 9th 2008

Hello Everyone, We spent some beautiful days in Big Bend National Park, in the heart of the Chihuahan desert. We learned alot from the rangers there, about the raptors, the invasive species and the Rio Grande. We had to be careful with Jenny the Dog because of the Javelinas, which came around in packs at night. We are now in Carlsbad, New Mexico, where we visited the cavern. Max says: The cavern was amazing. A couple of times some water dripped on my nose. Sadly, we couldn't touch any of the rocks, but got a couple of pebbles. There are lots and lots of Peregrine Falcons here. So now we move on toward Arizona. Tomorrow we will pass briefly back into Texas to avoid heading with the trailer through the snowy mountains around Alamagordo. ... read more

Learning As We Go
February 26th 2008

Hello all! We have been catching up on schoolwork, staying in State Parks across Texas. The last few nights we have been at beautiful South Llanos River State Park, where the night stars were breathtaking. We have two sessions a day, usually a morning of math and language arts, and an afternoon of more experiential stuff: hiking, zoology, geology, and so forth. The breaks in between are spent in collaboratively preparing meals, cleaning and keeping camp, but we have also found a little time for juggling, some music-making and watercolor sessions. We are heading West again today, and stopped in this sweet Kimball County Library to do emailing. Our decision tonight will be about whether to head South to Big Bend National Park or up North to the Guadalupe Mountains National Park. Meantime, we would like ... read more
