Well, another week has gone by and we are comfortably settled in. Last week, Linda was walking with Matt, another teacher 10 minutes to the Metro, 15 minute Metro ride, then another 20 or so minutes catching a shuttle bus up to the school from the Metro. The whole process takes 45 minutes to get from home to the school, and teachers are expected in their classes by 7:30. That means Linda is leaving home at 6:25 a.m. Now, for the school. I am still hoping Linda will soon find time to blog about her school in detail. What a huge place. Their enrollment (approximately 2600 students....preschool-grade 12) is increasing, and their academic standards are rising when measured against other private schools. The number of graduates being accepted into international universities of their choices was at ... read more

Maurice says that I have to tell you about school here in Mexico City. So, with cervesa in chilled mug, I start out my school blog. I began school AT the school on August 4th, Wednesday. There are many departments at this school and each of the departments had to do something that let all the newcomers know that they were very important and they really are, but after a full week and a half of this I WAS SICK of meetings. I don't really remember all the stuff they told me about, but they gave me a laptop and sent me off to laptop world to play on it. The rooms are small and most don't have a teacher desk or a table to work at. Everything needs to be locked because nothing get stolen ... read more

WE ARE IN!!! This is Maurice, Linda will blog later this week with all the school information for those interested in all that "teacher stuff"! Wow, what a week! Saturday morning,we were treated by the Parent Associaion to a bus trip to a popular large market at San Angel! We were able to pick up a few things for the apartment and now know where to go for some Christmas shopping. We were dropped off by the bus at our apartment. We rented it unfurnished, however, because Rosa, our landlady, likes us, she volunteered the furniture she had if we would like to use it. We were charmed with a bedroom set complete except for a mattress and bed in a bag, which we bought and had delivered on Saturday! She also had a fridge and ... read more

Sunday 5 am August 1st, and we are off to the airport. Nice flight into Chicago, and all is well. We were delayed 2 hours in Chicago, plane ready, crew ready and passengers waiting. We found out after Aero Mexicana is on strike, they grounded 30 flights Sunday, some of Linda's fellow teachers were stranded and only came in the next day. Nice flight, very good food and free liquor, maybe that's why they are declaring bankruptcy. We made it!!! We cleared customs and were immediately met by Ana Rosa, the American School Foundation (ASF) rep and she brought us to PF Suites, a 5 star hotel with a kitchen, bathroom and king size bedroom. Very nice. Monday and Tuesday We met Rennie, a teacher and welcoming committee member who spent all day with us apartment ... read more

The one with the Lucha Libre, Tequila and The Zocalo. so after learning how to make tequila and finding out that ancient people drank something called pulque which is 5% and tastes exactly like cider i was well pleased to be drinking some so when im told that salt on the hand and lime after the shot is ´just hollywood for the pictures' im thinking shit am i going to have to drink this straight, turns out the mexican way to drink tequila is actually a hell of a lot better and easier to do in the first place...bascially you pour the salt onto the lime, then you take the lime/salt juice into your mouth and hold it there, do the shot and mix the two before swallowing it goes down so easily its untrue ... read more

I explored the Roma and Condesa neighborhoods with a couple people from the hostel. For a megalopolis, Mexico City has some great sleepy neighborhoods. We stopped for coffee and went to all of the parks in that area. To the market for comida, again.... read more

Right, well it’s time I got off my backside and caught up with some blogs. After Cancun we headed to Mexico City. With an afternoon flight we get into Mexico City at night and the airport is massive. Whilst waiting for our luggage I called our hosts at the hostel to arrange our free airport pick-up and where to be collected. We are told that they will only drive past once and to keep an eye out for a gold station wagon yeah cool no worries, until we get out into the dark and you can’t distinguish colour of any vehicle and then we see why they only do one drive by and cannot wait. There are police on the pavement in regular intervals and should an innocent dare stop and get out of the driver’s ... read more

I leave Mexico with mixed feelings and a little disappointed that we lost so much time to sorting out problems with our flights. Mexico can be incredibly frustrating do not be in a rush or late in Mexico it really doesn't work no one will share your sense of urgency and you will just end up more frustrated like a fly banning it's head against a window. I like a relaxed attitude it's better for the blood pressure but sometimes when your really up against it other peoples relaxed attitude can drive you up the bloody wall. The majority of Mexicans that I met did not welcome me with a smile but stood stoney faced, their features in neutral. After some interaction, especially when conducted in Spanish a smile would break out and a warmth would ... read more

We stay in Condessa in a reasonably priced hotel. Our room has a bedroom and dining area that is seperated by an orange and blue wall that has several holes cut into it. I go out and get a take out pizza and crep with chips. I buy coke to mix with some cheap rum that we have bought and a few beers. We lie in bed watching movies and chill. The next day we rise late and take a taxi to my favourite hostel 'Hostel la Mapina' in Central Historical where you can get a bag of laundry for fifty five pesos. From there we go to the Central North Bus Station which is busseling with familys visiting for xmas. We eventually find the bus to Tenochtitlán, the ruins just out side Mexico City. The ... read more
