Today we took a tour of Ottawa's Parliament building. The building was created in the gothic style and incorporates a lot of very interesting architecture. (Sorry...still no pictures.) The most interesting part of the day was listening to a presentation by Amelita Armit. Ms. Armit is the Vice President of the Programs of the Parliamentary Centre. She has lived in Canada, in the Phillippines, and in the U.S. and has participated in the Canadian government as an Assistant Deputy Minister in Alberta. Ms. Armit basically gave an overview of the Canadian government, while contrasting it with the U.S. system. She also addressed many current issues and challenges in Canada. Canada is a representative democracy, but their governing system is different than the U.S. It is a constitutional monarchy with Queen Elizabeth II serving as head of ... read more

On to Duck Mountain Provincial Park Tuesday, 3 July 2007 Today we were re-locating to a condo which is part of the Duck Mountain Lodge for two nights. I was fairly eager to see it, as the website shows a very interesting exterior & it’s right in Duck Mountain PP, on the shore of Madge Lake. Because the ride was expected to be mainly on paved roads I decided to take Blue. It’s the first time I’ve used that bicycle since my little fall, as somehow I find my wrists a bit more stressed with it - more pressure on them, I guess. So we loaded up Casper with our belongings, checked out of the Yorke Inn, and left behind Yorkton & the commensurate trappings of “civilization” - the Tim Hortons, the Wendy’s, McDonald’s, Canadian Tire ... read more

We made our way from Port Hardy to the ferry terminal to jump on the BC ferrys to head to Prince Rupert. We stayed in Prince Rubert which is just south off the Alaskan boarder for 2 nights. We meet some really nice people who we went drinking with for 2 days in the bar that over looked the harbour and met some really friendly fishermen who bought us shots, another fisherman was going to pick up a boat in Petersburg and asked us to join him in a free trip to Russia as thats where he was sailing to after. Unfortunately we couldnt go as we had to stick to our plans as it would have messed up our flights. We ended up blocked the day that we were leaving and had to go through ... read more

My Greta Garbo phase is over. No longer cycling solo. Met up again with Alain and Tom, Swiss guys that I met last year in South America, in Vancouver. The last time I saw Alain was in Bolivia when I watched him cycle off into the rain forest with Felix the map cutter, an organic farmer from Dresden. At the time I vowed that I wouldn't let myself get hurt again and rush straight into another cycling relationship on the rebound. However time is a great healer. After a year pedalling on my own it has been good fun riding with them from Vancouver to Whitehorse. We have developed our own exclusive touring language which is a combination of badly pronounced Spanish (with lots of over enthusiastic r's being rolled all over the place), Swiss-German ... read more

I felt refreshed and ready to start a new chapter of my journey heading to North America. I didn't feel so refreshed by the time I got there. Nevertheless I carried on like a true alcoholic and went out for drinks with some local couch surfers when I arrived. Friday I caught up with my old Today Show co-worker Pat who now resides in Toronto. After several pitchers I moved on to a birthday celebration for another local. After a 7am finish my jet lag was in overdrive. After a few hours sleep I went out for a Vietnamese lunch with Pat, his Canadian wife and my host. That night we went to a house party where a lot of the guests were in the film industry - some interesting stories. I also met one ... read more

Well, it's our 4th day of rain (at least by late afternoon it finally quit) - felt great to be outdoors and not dripping wet! We're in Whitehorse - it was a beautiful drive with lots of lakes and rivers. Yesterday was a also a great drive - we saw lots of wildlife - stone sheep (similar to our big horn sheep), lots of wild buffalo, red fox, deer, elk (Alvin said all he needs to see is carribou and bear & he'll be happy). Sorry I haven't been answering emails - I haven't been able to get into it. Tonight it at least gave me an error message (Kim, I did some checking with AOL - but didn't get to a spot I could report the error) - It was error code COFE180D; report ID ... read more

Veregin, Veregin Monday, 2 July 2007 The intention for me today was to bike via the Trans Canada Trail (TCT) from Kamsack to Veregin. The route is nicely mapped out on the Trails Saskatchewan website & it seemed like it would be pretty easy to follow. Bob was going to find a place to walk with Panna in the morning & perhaps “scout ahead” for Duck Mountain Provincial Park, where we plan to stay starting tomorrow. Silver & I were dropped off at what I was certain was an entry to the TCT, and Bob went off for the day. We had made arrangements to meet at Veregin some 4-5 hours hence. However, the trail rapidly descended in quality to a muddy track between & through farmers’ fields, so I turned around, retraced my steps, and ... read more

Ottawa, CanadaToday was another very busy day. The Fulbright group met a 7:45 a.m. for breakfast, and at 8:30 a.m. we headed off for the Museum of Civilization. Here we were lead on a tour of the museum, where we learned about the history of Canada from pre-contact of Europe to present. The museum had an excellent exhibition of First Nation artifacts and their history. From here we went over to the National Gallery of Canada, where we toured the museum and saw Canada’s permanent art collection of both contemporary and modern art. All of the artists were Canadian. Finally we had high tea at the Chateau Laurier where met with Clare Beckton who spoke on women’s issues in Canada. Hoy era otro dia muy ocupado. El grupo de becarios de Fulbright se juntaron para almorzar ... read more

Bratty Comment of the Day: I'm not used to eating this much. I rarely eat breakfast at home. These days I'm eating a full breakfast, lunch, and dinner. As our Southern group member said "I'm just stuffed to the gills". After another big breakfast at the Phi Restaurant we took a cab up to the Museum of Civilization. We spent a good hour looking at historical artifacts from the First Nations. They had an amazing display of totem poles and the homes of the First Nations. It was a lot of great information. Third grade teachers, I have a lot of great pictures for our storytelling unit! We continued on through the museum and got a Disneyland-esque tour of Canadian history. Everything had a display with characters similar to those in Pirates of the Caribbean. I ... read more
