Well I'm here in signpost city and trying to continue my blog. We left Medicine Hat Sunday the 11th and spent the next three nights at Stoney Nakota Casino where we took side trips to Banff and Lake Louise. We took an alternate route the second trip and watched two Elk grazing on the side of the road. Fellow ESKP Ted Applegate arrived and we set out for the Snaring River campround ( not a large RV friedly place ). On the way North through Banff Provincial Park we noticed several animal overpasses that had been built to allow migrating animals to pass over the highway in relative safety. We spent the night at Snaring River Camp Grounds before departing for Grande Prairie the next morning, it was a beautiful drive through the Canadian Rockies and ... read more

Life again had its way with changing things on us. Originally we just let Google maps choose how we ended up in Grande Prairie, but after talking to our friend Paul he smartly suggested we get to GP via Jasper national park. And what a trip it was! It’s kind of sad to say that in both our 27 years we have not really experienced this amazing place. The views were stunning and the drive was calm and peaceful. Both BJ and I loved checking out Athabasca falls…. What a show! We seem to have great timing with beating any rushes, and made it to the falls before all the good view points were stuffed with other tourists. Although I suppose that we can be classified among them now. We also took the scenic route to ... read more

As we left town, we passed a local landmark, a signpost forest. during construction of the Alaska-Canada highway in 1942-1942, one of the soldiers asked if he could put a sign about his hoemtown on the signpost of distances to cities. He was given permission and that started a signpost forest. Janet thought about a cribbage board we had that was shaped like a fifth-wheel trailer and suggested that we add it to a signpost in the forest . so, we did! That was fun. Later, we took a nice nature walk to a some waterfalls. Nancy is using the Milepost, a publication that lists something for almost every mile on the AlCan and any other road that connects up to it. It listed the waterfalls as a good walk, and it was right! Later on, ... read more

There were lots of Canada flags flying for their Canada Day weekend. It was odd for us not to see all the red, white and blue hoopla for the 4th. Instead, we took in wildlife viewing today. We saw a moose, two caribou, 3 black bears, and about 90 wood bison. We also paid $1.79 per liter for fuel! No fireworks, but it wasn't dark anyway...... read more

It was beautiful this morning with the sun shining on the mountains and on the lake. We watched a float plane taxi out and take off toward Atlin Mountain. We left Gena and Bob in Atlin visiting an old friend of Bob’s mother. We dawdled along, stopping to take pictures and easing over the bumps in the road. We saw two black bears within a couple of miles of each other, but saw them too late to take pictures. Along Atlin road there are two government campgrounds, Snafu Lake and Tarfu Lake. I would imagine there’s a story behind those names. We met up with Gena and Bob at Jake’s Corners and headed east on the Alaska Highway. Until we passed the Cassiar Hwy, it was all scenery we had seen on the way up to ... read more

We woke to a mostly clear but chilly morning (about 37 degrees). Bob went out to take pictures - - got a really good one of two Loons paddling by. After breakfast, we got ready to leave but had to wait while Bob installed limiting blocks on the supports he had installed on the camper top last night. Norm Vig, owner of Norseman RV park came over to supervise. Norm was a friend of Dad’s. Once everyone was ready to go, we bid farewell to Norm. Charlie and Kerry headed on up to Jake’s Corner while Bob and Gena went over to Elizabeth’s house to say “Hello”. Elizabeth was a close friend of mother’s and had been the postmistress in Atlin for many years. We had a really nice visit with her, got her phone ... read more

We've finally made it to the Yukon, Canada's fourth smallest territory/province (We're not entirely sure what the difference is between a Territory and a Province, but the Yukon is a Territory and BC is a Province). For all you fact fans (there must be at least one of you out there...?), the Yukon has an area of 186,000 sq miles and a population of just 33,000 people: 75% of whom live in the "city" of Whitehorse. We are currently in the third largest "city" - Watson Lake - which apparently has a population of 846! "That's all very well", I hear you ask (come on, work with me here) "but what have you been up to the rest of the week?" Well, funny you should ask that... We've been travelling up the Stewart-Cassiar highway for the ... read more

Internet access has been spotty while visiting friends the last little while, in the sense that I've been too busy having fun to post to the blog. However, now that I'm back on the road all that has changed. Today was an absolutely epic drive from Vanderhoof, BC (just west of Prince George) to Watson Lake up in the Yukon. Suffice to say that the drive across the Yellowhead to Smithers was peachy, but half way up the Cassiar in the middle of no-man's land things started to get interesting. My lasting impression/description of the upper portion of the Cassiar - long (500 km) - right through mountains - twisty switchbacks with hairpin turns - gravel surface - snow covered - desolate - gas stations closed at 6 pm, used the 60 liters i had in ... read more

Journal date: September 15, 2009 (5:00 am). Awake after fitful night sleeping in primitive shelter. Need to move on and try to find food and drink on the trail ahead. It’s 4 below zero this morning (Celsius). Winter is coming on fast; need to keep moving further south. Still dark; need to navigate by the moon and stars. Constantly looking for signs of wildlife that might jump out of the darkness and harm me or my trusty steed. It’s treacherous in the Yukon Territory and a man can’t be too careful. UPDATE: Well, the sun finally came up, the Miata heater is working fine and I found a restaurant along the trail for breakfast. Everything is fine now. The weather today started out “dark”, followed by totally sunny (all morning) then partly cloudy, then mostly cloudy, ... read more

Watson Lake was an important point during the construction of the Alaskan Highway in 1942. The airport, built in 1941, was one of the major refueling stops along the Northwest Staging Route, the system of airfields through Canada to ferry supplies to Alaska and later lend-lease aircraft to Russia. Of the nearly 8,000 aircraft ferried through Canada, 2618 were Bell P-39 Airacobras. The economy of Watson Lake is based on services to mining exploration and on the forest products industry. White spruce and lodgepole pine are the two main trees of the Yukon and provide a forest industry for the entire territory. The Signpost Forest is also located here. At the north end of town, the Signpost Forest is an area of town where Carl K. Lindley of Danville, Il., a U.S. soldier working on construction ... read more
