We are heading out on the open road to finally see first hand what our amazing home country has to offer!
We will be traveling with our house on our roof, our kitchen in the backseat and our maps on the dashboard. Taking a leave of absence from work we will spend almost 3 months journeying to the far reaches of Canada- North, East and all breathtaking places in-between.
Happy Travels and hope to see you on the road!

Sorry about the delay in posting, I find it hard to sit down and focus when I am surrounded by such beauty and distracted by so many fun goings on. We arrived in Nova Scotia on July 30 and spent the morning touring the Springhill mine. It is a true testament to the survival and tenacity of the miner. A large bump happened in 1956, caving in a huge portion of the Cumberland mine killing 74 miners and trapping a total of 100; it took 5.5 days to rescue all the men and the mine never reopened. Our guide was an actual miner in the Springhill mines; he worked the coal for 11 years and hated every moment of it. For the first 8 years he would walk from the lamp house, get on the coal ... read more

It’s incredible the way time can get away from you. It feels like I just posted an entry yesterday but another week has passed. We enjoyed my Aunt’s family bbq, especially the boat ride around the point and Deer Island, no whales showed up this year, but it was a beautiful time on the water regardless. BJ and I enjoyed a few more days of relaxation and then finally packed up and headed on to P.E.I. on Tuesday. It’s a fairly quick drive from Saint John to Charlottetown, but we took our time sightseeing along the way. One of the stops we had to make was Magnetic Hill just outside of Moncton. You enter the park, pay $5 and drive over to Magnetic Hill where you drive to the ‘bottom’ of the hill and turn around ... read more

Welcome to New Brunswick, land of the winding narrow roads, roadside blueberry markets and lapping waves on rocky outcrops. We left Quebec and headed on to New Brunswick, which is where we are still. We have been staying with my Auntie Brenda just outside Saint John in the lovely little town L’etete. The house is directly on the water and we get to see the tides come in and out from the big back deck. There are 2 little beaches right off the back of the property, where a friend of the family’s went and picked us fresh scallops for dinner the night we arrived. He just suited up in a dry suit, put on a tank of air and spent an hour gathering scallops and interesting sea life for us to look at. He brought ... read more

It has been a while since we last posted; looking back at where we left off seems like ages ago. We spent two lovely nights just outside of Montreal, and spent a day taking in the sights of Old Montreal. The weather was incredible, hot and humid and the afternoon was filled with warm showers. We got a little wet, but thankfully we are not made of sugar and didn’t melt. Old Montreal has lots to offer both for the stomach and for the eyes. The area is shockingly European, with cobblestone streets and narrow and winding roads. The street life is active and abundant, with cafés and tables lining the street sides. We first took in the Notre-Dame Basilica, what a beautiful building! It is one of the largest churches in North America and is ... read more

It’s 8:15 a.m. and I am sitting on a lovely patio at the campsite here in Quebec, enjoying the already hot morning sorting through photos and attempting to write a blog. We made it to the Montreal area yesterday afternoon and are getting ready to enjoy the new experiences of a province with another language. I should go back a few days first; I believe left off with us having spent an incredible time in Niagara Falls and heading to Toronto. Driving to Toronto was far easier than we expected, we left Niagara Falls after the rush hour so it made driving the 401 a lot less stressful. The 401 is Deerfoot Trail jacked up on steroids, a lot of steroids! There are collector highways that run parallel to the Express way that are 3 lanes ... read more

We spent three lovely nights in Kamsack and were fed delicious hearty home cooking and jumped at the chance to get some major laundry done. BJ’s aunt Gloria and his Grandma were great hosts, they not only filled our bellies but showed us a thing or two about Rummy strategies. We played lots of cards, slept in and even got a good run session in while we were in town. After getting loaded up with food from Gloria we hit the road and made our way to Manitoba. We decided to head west of Winnipeg for our first campground, considering our best friend Becky is spending the summer in Calgary and was not around to chill with. We seem to have pretty good luck or coincidence so far with this trip, as BJ really wanted to ... read more

Driving back south from Dawson through Whitehorse was another beautiful drive, I’m sure that word is getting over used in the first couple of entries, but it is the simple truth. Nothing too exciting happened on our drive, we spotted more black bears on the sides of the highway and enjoyed the sunny day we were given. In Whitehorse we got the oil changed and the tires balanced on our beast- that is the name that we have finally bestowed on to our Ford Escape- Beast. She can make it up and down the Dempster and can keep on driving even after sustaining a few battle scars. From Whitehorse we decided to get some more miles under us and woke early for a long few days of driving. We headed all the way to Fort Nelson ... read more

The Dempster Highway. That small sentence holds a huge amount of intrigue for me. It has been a destination that I have wanted to conquer for a few years now. It was 3 years ago that I decided that I would go up the Dempster, see the midnight sun and then take on the rest of Canada. Since deciding to do the Dempster I have spent time looking into the facts of the road, but more so seeking the experiences of those who have traveled her length. I came into this trip expecting flat tires, broken windshields, battered shocks and bruised body. The stories of others vary from one end of the spectrum to the next, some have made the trip and come off the road with just a rock chip, others have had multiple flat ... read more

Where can you go to have a human toe cocktail? Dawson City! Where can you go to try your luck for gold? Dawson City!! Where can you go to find a never setting sun? Dawson City!!! And so, here we are! Coming into the city was a unique sight, there are massive tailing lines of rock and stone all along the highway and that stretch for further than you can see. It is a strange landscape, BJ and I couldn’t figure out if this was natural or brought here from the gold rush. BJ guessed right, all the stone was here from the early 1900’s when a dredge was operating just outside the city. It would tear up the Earth looking for Percer gold and deposit the gravel and stone behind it as it went. After ... read more

Word of the day- Remote

I was thinking about it today and I realized that I had no concept of what remote meant. Sure, it’s a vague idea in my mind that you are far from others, that there isn’t another town or community for a while, but I come from Alberta, and generally speaking you can find town within an hours drive from one another. On the road up here I started to figure out that there are places where a sign post reads 363km to Eagle Lodge- and they mean it. There is nothing at all for another 363km. Nothing, no town, no community, no village…. nothing. Just road, trees, space. Out here in Dawson City you find people who came for varying reason, some to find a summer of adventure, others to try their luck with gold. But ... read more
