Day 2--- The Canada Experience thus far...
Published: July 23rd 2011North America » Canada » Yukon » Watson LakeMy travel through Canada so far have been... uhh, a little less then pleasant.... Thankfully I did find my passport and did successfully get into Canada without getting searched!!! Too bad I had already ditched the pipe because of paranoia... Since I have been in Canada my cell phone has worked, maybe, 30 mins and that was after I drove 9 hours without it and spent another 1.5 hours on a gross payphone (yes they still have those in Canada, thank goodness!) with AT&T.... I traveled somewhere around 700 miles yesterday and today, I have been listening to "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" and could of drove all night but was forced to stop in Watson Lake because no gas station was open. Then this morning I found out that not only was my cell ... read more
July 10, 2011 - WATSON LAKE, YT TO TESLIN, YT
Published: July 11th 2011North America » Canada » Yukon » Watson LakeJuly 10, 2011 – WATSON LAKE, YT TO TESLIN, YT When we woke up this morning the rain had passed and we were fortunate to have another beautiful day with sunshine and interesting cloud formations in the sky which adds so much to the pictures. It was a lovely drive today with many interesting stops along the way. We pulled off the road at Rancheria Falls where we enjoyed a walk through the woods to the falls. Actually, coming from BC, we were not too impressed with what they called “falls”!! However, it was a good place to stop for a bite of lunch in our rigs. At another pull out we met up with a young couple who are biking from Alaska to the tip of Argentina, taking a year and a half to do ... read more
JULY 9, 2011 - LIARD HOTSPRINGS, BC TO WATSON LAKE, YT
Published: July 11th 2011North America » Canada » Yukon » Watson LakeJuly 9, 2011 – LIARD HOTSPRINGS, BC TO WATSON LAKE, YT. This morning before we left Liard Hotsprings we stopped in at the Lodge and took a few interesting pictures of the Elk Head, the Moose Head and an Albino Bear Cub. As you will see from the pictures, we also had a bit of fun as well!! Our drive today was most interesting. The further north we go the landscape becomes more interesting and spectacular, but the thing that was the highlight of today was the number of animals we saw along the side of the highway. I believe we saw about 6 Black Bears and many Wood Bison. The Bison are calving and one pair we came across was a mother with her newborn calf. The calf was very unstable on his legs, so ... read more
Today was by far the worst. It started out with a lovely breakfast at the Glacier Inn in Hyder,AK. We left a dollar bill on the wall to continue the tradition started in 1927.They even served fresh fruit. I have not had fresh fruit since I left Jonesboro. I ask for fruit and I get canned fruit cocktail in heavy syrup.Turned on to the Casshier Hwy. Then it started to rain and I discovered my boots leaked. After so many miles my feet went numb, then my ankles and finally my knees locked into a 90degree angle. I thought, gosh what next? Well, signs stating loose gravel came next. There was no loose gravel on the first run, it was huge different sized cobblestones that were loose. Luckily, I had an RV bus that went ahead of ... read more
It has been touch-and-go with internet service for several days and no cell service for 2 days. Hoping to get something better as we move northwest to Alaska. Monday morning - the DHL facility should be open and have our sign for the Sign Forest. Off we go to Twilite Services where we find that DHL delivered on Wed last week, but nothing else since. No sign!! So, off to the Sign Forest with the hope that we can come back through Watson Lake, post our sign and be a part of history for future generations. The Sign Forest was very cool. I am posting pictures of some fun signs. For Debbie McCutchen, I looked all over for a Roll Tide sign, but could only come up with the Auburn sign I took a picture of. ... read more
Day 15: Liard Hot Springs to Watson Lake, YT
Published: June 29th 2011North America » Canada » Yukon » Watson LakeLast night, we decided to get an early start in the hopes of seeing better wildlife. Our little canine alarm clock (Princess) accommodated us by waking up at 5:00 am. We got everything ready and started rolling at 5:30; much later than dawn up here in the wilderness with at least 18 hours on daylight. We had not gone ten miles before we saw another black bear. Then, down the road, buffalo herds. We stopped just past a bridge where a buffalo was grazing and, before we knew it, he was right beside the coach. We got to Watson Lake by 8:30 am, so we drove to the local Wye Lake, fixed breakfast and enjoyed the view before checking into the campground. Population of Watson Lake is around 1600. It is home to the famous Watson ... read more
Alaska Bound Solos-Allan Continued
Published: June 23rd 2011North America » Canada » Yukon » Watson LakeWell I'm here in signpost city and trying to continue my blog. We left Medicine Hat Sunday the 11th and spent the next three nights at Stoney Nakota Casino where we took side trips to Banff and Lake Louise. We took an alternate route the second trip and watched two Elk grazing on the side of the road. Fellow ESKP Ted Applegate arrived and we set out for the Snaring River campround ( not a large RV friedly place ). On the way North through Banff Provincial Park we noticed several animal overpasses that had been built to allow migrating animals to pass over the highway in relative safety. We spent the night at Snaring River Camp Grounds before departing for Grande Prairie the next morning, it was a beautiful drive through the Canadian Rockies and ... read more
Potholes, BIG things & pure awesomness
Published: June 14th 2011North America » Canada » Yukon » Watson LakeLife again had its way with changing things on us. Originally we just let Google maps choose how we ended up in Grande Prairie, but after talking to our friend Paul he smartly suggested we get to GP via Jasper national park. And what a trip it was! It’s kind of sad to say that in both our 27 years we have not really experienced this amazing place. The views were stunning and the drive was calm and peaceful. Both BJ and I loved checking out Athabasca falls…. What a show! We seem to have great timing with beating any rushes, and made it to the falls before all the good view points were stuffed with other tourists. Although I suppose that we can be classified among them now. We also took the scenic route to ... read more
As we left town, we passed a local landmark, a signpost forest. during construction of the Alaska-Canada highway in 1942-1942, one of the soldiers asked if he could put a sign about his hoemtown on the signpost of distances to cities. He was given permission and that started a signpost forest. Janet thought about a cribbage board we had that was shaped like a fifth-wheel trailer and suggested that we add it to a signpost in the forest . so, we did! That was fun. Later, we took a nice nature walk to a some waterfalls. Nancy is using the Milepost, a publication that lists something for almost every mile on the AlCan and any other road that connects up to it. It listed the waterfalls as a good walk, and it was right! Later on, ... read more
There were lots of Canada flags flying for their Canada Day weekend. It was odd for us not to see all the red, white and blue hoopla for the 4th. Instead, we took in wildlife viewing today. We saw a moose, two caribou, 3 black bears, and about 90 wood bison. We also paid $1.79 per liter for fuel! No fireworks, but it wasn't dark anyway...... read more
