Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

As this is the family blog I thought it was time that I, Nataghia, wrote a bit about our second week in July. Our first week in Saskatoon was great and certainly allowed us to get in the holiday mode. I especially enjoyed attending the Broadway show Mamma Mia on Thursday night with Ron, Marie and Diane. If anyone enjoys ABBA music I would encourage you to see it if you ever get the chance! Saturday, July 7th we packed up the van again, with a bit less stuff this time, and hit the road. On this journey we went northwest [View Full Entry]

Summer has arrived and it has started with a flurry of activity. Of course anyone who has moved knows that the experience can be trying and tiring. We spent our first afternoon of summer holidays hauling things to storage. Of course it was about 30 degrees Celsius and in the evening we had an unbelievable thunderstorm. We went out to watch as the skies were lit up like a nightclub with an overzealous effects person going crazy with the strobe and fogger. Unfortunately the power went out with the storm and we were without electricity for our final eighteen hours in [View Full Entry]

Happy 4th from Duck Mountain! Wednesday, 4 July 2007 This morning I decided to give Bob a break from Panna - actually he’d offered to do some maintenance work on my bikes for me, and I felt like taking a long walk or hike through the woods on the TCT there with Panna, so it was a day off from cycling. Fairly early in the walk we met another gal who was walking her young dog (9 mos.), a border collie mix named Boots, very sweet but very energetic. The gal, Kathleen, now lives in British Columbia, but she grew up [View Full Entry]

Why NOT Saskatchewan?? This is a posting to summarize our feelings about our 2˝ weeks in Saskatchewan. On the whole we thoroughly enjoyed it, and recommend it heartily to anyone planning a leisurely trip through the western portion of Canada. First of all it’s not entirely flat. If one ventures off the main highways, especially towards the provincial parks & the river valleys, there are lovely hills, not amazingly impressive as in Alberta or British Colombia, but of a more reasonable, “livable” scale. At this time of year too, the patterns of greens and yellows in th [View Full Entry]

On to Duck Mountain Provincial Park Tuesday, 3 July 2007 Today we were re-locating to a condo which is part of the Duck Mountain Lodge for two nights. I was fairly eager to see it, as the website shows a very interesting exterior & it’s right in Duck Mountain PP, on the shore of Madge Lake. Because the ride was expected to be mainly on paved roads I decided to take Blue. It’s the first time I’ve used that bicycle since my little fall, as somehow I find my wrists a bit more stressed with it - more pressure on them, [View Full Entry]

Veregin, Veregin Monday, 2 July 2007 The intention for me today was to bike via the Trans Canada Trail (TCT) from Kamsack to Veregin. The route is nicely mapped out on the Trails Saskatchewan website & it seemed like it would be pretty easy to follow. Bob was going to find a place to walk with Panna in the morning & perhaps “scout ahead” for Duck Mountain Provincial Park, where we plan to stay starting tomorrow. Silver & I were dropped off at what I was certain was an entry to the TCT, and Bob went off for the day. We [View Full Entry]

Happy Canada Day! Sunday, 1 July 2007 Today dawned cool but with definite potential to get warmer as the day progressed, so I took Silver & rode towards Kamsack, on highway 8. Even though it was a quiet day for commercial transport vehicles there were still quite a few holiday-seekers out in their RV’s or pickup trucks pulling boats or mobile homes, just booting it up the highway, trying get to their destinations as quickly as possible. They weren’t nearly as considerate as those who drive for a living. But everything went well, no serious wind problems (hooray!) and fai [View Full Entry]

Half & half Saturday, 30 June 2007 We woke up to a very rainy morning, although by the time we’d finished breakfast it had stopped. There’s an “ecological reserve” within walking distance of the motel, so I decided to go there with Panna for part of my exercise. As there are no sidewalks to the place we cut across the parking lot of a large indoor pool/sports complex, and lo & behold we found a path to the reserve. It was a lot like the Beaverpond area of Kanata, but more organized from a historical, informative perspective. The property had belonged [View Full Entry]

Sleeping on a bed with a questionable mattress always proves to be an interesting sleep - Man with sore back. Luckily we were so tired from our busy day that we slept through most of the night but our bed was quite the experienced one. We had heard tales of days past when up to 21 people would spend the night in the cabin; and they all probably crashed in that one bed! At any rate, we were greeted promptly at 5AM by Kessler, who needed to use the facilities and again at 8:30AM by Wayne, who had kindly volunteered [View Full Entry]

RECOVERED

On to Yorkton Friday, 29 June 2007 Today we left Regina for Yorkton, a bit further east & north. However, we had to take a slight “detour” to retreive a shirt I’d left in Moosomin. It’s one I’ve had for years, one which I take travelling because it is light-weight, dark in colour, and always looks wrinkled, whether I fold it properly or not. Seems I’d left it at the motel there and only realized it when I needed it to take to a restaurant (they are often too cold for my “West Indian blood”, especially when the air-conditioning is on [View Full Entry]
