Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

Blast-Off

There are some things in life that a person can prepare for and feel comfortable that they had done everything possible to make things “just right”. Physically preparing and packing are easy compared to the mental preparation and emotional roller coaster that we are experiencing this week. This week the focus was all about the details. Buying insurance, contacting hotels, confirming travel arrangements and trying to pack 10 months worth of books, clothes, and personal effects into two large, two medium, two carry-on and three back-packs is not nearly as challenging as thinking abou [View Full Entry]

Our remaining ride from Manitoba to Winnipeg went quickly with flat roads and mild winds. We think we must have gotten lucky in the prairies because we had heard so many horror stories about the wind but hadn’t really experienced its wrath. So we felt very lucky when our first very windy experience was with a tail wind!!! The day we made it into Saskatchewan was an average-weathered day and we made it to our destination in the early afternoon. At about the same time, a huge tailwind came our way. We were told in Kenora that if there is a [View Full Entry]

Aging beautifully just like a fine wine!
A bit of backtracking to start this week’s entry. After the busy week of hockey school, when Benjamin and I really missed seeing Owen and Dad, we were glad to hang out on Saturday morning after the hockey game. In the afternoon while the boys relaxed I attended the wedding ceremony of a friend from high school, Glenda Gates. It was a beautiful and unique wedding with the groom, Danny Skene, and his groomsmen coming in to the Hockey Night in Canada theme song and the wedding party walking out to bagpipes playing. I loved it and wish the happy couple [View Full Entry]

The Long Road
The Long Road
As you can see, the road is quite straight with little to divert the attention, for good or bad. Good thing I had radio reception, or I would have been more bored to tears.
My trip the day before to Manitoba was very long (638 miles), so I hoped for a shorter one (in miles, not always time). I had to make a decision to either go northwest towards Saskatoon and onward to Edmonton and Jasper, or due west towards Regina, then Calgary and a long northward drive to Jasper, so I chose the former. Good choice. However, I must say that the towns are not much to write home about, literally. They have a marker just before the town indicating the services offered, and an indicator of when the service road begins. Kind of [View Full Entry]

Not like we were expecting any. Arriving in mid afternoon we interrupted quiet time and both Duffy and Diogi seemed somewhat unimpressed. Mom and Dad had taken off earlier in the day to attend the Elkhorn Homecoming and I think the dogs had plans that were devious [View Full Entry]

As summer holidays go, this year has been so awesome. We have lost ourselves in exploring Saskatchewan and touching base with so many people from our immediate and extended families. One thing that we have been faced with on occasion is a lack of internet access. Of course this does not help us with getting the blog posted in a timely manner. However, for the past few weeks we have indeed had internet access. Why aren’t we up to date with our blog? We have become immersed in the experience of being on holidays and having no deadlines, commitments, or schedules. [View Full Entry]

A trip to Otter Lake is not complete without hiking to to bottom of the rapids
There are many places a person can relax and enjoy a slow pace of life while enjoying the small things in life. Otter Lake is one of our favorites! As a result of the benevolence of Taras and his cohorts who so graciously permit us to use the cabin we have our own paradise in Northern Saskatchewan. The things that make staying at Missinipe so great include: not having to drive to get to the beach, store, and park. Seeing close friends who we don’t see often enough and friends who are not so close but know us well enough [View Full Entry]

Where are we?
Paul Island

Hey everyone! Sorry for not giving any news lately. I've been on the road like crazy since I got to Saskatchewan on Friday afternoon. I decided to split up my blog by province for now as I visited 3 provinces in 24 hours. I arrived in Saskatoon on time. Stacey's dad was there to pick me up. I was kinda scared we wouldn't recognize each other since we only met once 2 years ago. But it was okay. We drove from Saskatoon to North Battlefort (Stacey's home town). Stacey and her mom were there waiting for us with the dinner [View Full Entry]
