Sometimes myself and my friends (who do NOT wish to be included in my travel journalism) will take shopping trips around the city and have fun buying things that we think can sell for more money on eBay. Its a game. The rules are simple. We each have $50 maximum budget and one month to turn a profit. In this time we are expressly forbidden to promote our sales on our own social networks, like for example my travel blog, as the game is not about how many friends you have, but whether or not you can use your knowledge of antiques to pick the best items and turn a profit on your purchases in an online auction websites. Hence you will se no links to my eBay store or any sales here. The key to success ... read more

Geo: 43.6667, -79.4167St Lawrence Market is a great place for food shopping. It goes back to 1844 when it served as the first City Hall. The food market began in the 1900s. It is a paradise for food lovers. In its cavernous hall on the ground floor are several butchers, many cheese merchants, a number of bakers and food outlets/cafes. There was a fabulous kitchen utensil shop. What you can't find there is probably not worth having. In the basement are more grocery shops, health food shops, more eating places, chocolate shops, bakers and other type of stalls. It's a great shame that I couldn't bring a lot of the produce back to the UK. A combination of lack of luggage space as well as import restrictions. But there are ample opportunities for tasting what's on ... read more

Geo: 43.6667, -79.4167The Legislative Assembly of Ontario – the seat of the provincial government, is situated in Queen's Park. The building was built between 1886 and 1892 in the Romanesque Revival style heavily influence by northern Italian architecture. So it is a Victoria building; heavy and brown. Free guided tours were offered. The tour wasn't very long and not exactly in depth. We had to be escorted all the time for obvious reasons, so we weren't able to spend any time looking at the exhibits, which was a shame. The original building was built in oak. Unfortunately workmen left the stove burning and fire swept through the west wing in 1909. The restored wing was then built of marble, much less combustible. The highlight of the tour was being able to go into the Chamber. There ... read more

Geo: 43.6667, -79.4167Toronto prides itself as a multi-cultural city and as such there are many areas settled by various groups of immigrants. The most visible is probably Chinatown. Like many Chinese settlements overseas, food plays an important part. So, along the streets are Chinese restaurants of all descriptions with some Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese mixed in. It has a different feel to London Chinatown. For instance, there were shops selling dried sea food, which the Chinese are very fond of, in open barrels. This reminded me very much of Hong Kong. But as far as I know, it is not done in London. Perhaps it has something to do with health and safety. Everything would be sold in sealed packages. Little Italy is a bit more out of town. The area used to be where the ... read more

Geo: 43.6667, -79.4167London to Toronto Greetings from Toronto!A new country for us. Neither of us has been to Canada, so we are rather excited about the trip. A mere 8 hours in a BA jet, as opposed to 23 for Hawaii last year, meant that we arrived not suffering too much from jet lag. We are staying at the Sheraton Centre Hotel. The location is perfect. Very central, right opposite the City Hall and also part of the PATH underground system. The room is comfortable and spacious. However, we are not so keen on the lobby which is overwhelmingly brown and dimly lit. Atmosphere, I think they call it. Luckily the android phones now have a torch application which came in very handy. As a city hotel, there is no garden to speak but there is ... read more

Travelling from Niagara Falls to Toronto is an easy 1.5 hours along the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) and Gardiner Expressway. Add 15 minutes if crossing from the Peace Bridge in Buffalo. Princess of Wales Theatre plays host to the National Theatre of Great Britain production of "War Horse". At a capacity of 2000 the sight-lines are excellent from every seat in the theatre. David and Ed Mirvish built the theatre in 1993 and showcased Miss Saigon as the first production. This theatre and the other 3 Mirvish owned theatres, along with Winter Garden, Elgin, Toronto Centre for The Arts, St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts and Four Seasons Centre built in 2006 help make Toronto the largest live theatre centre in North America after New York. If I lived in Toronto I would never want for ... read more
