Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

Hi again everyone! Sadly we are now in our last week before we fly back to England for one more year. Our five weeks at home have been very busy, filled with wedding planning and visiting as many people as possible, dividing our time between KW, Toronto and Stratford. We tried our best but unfortunately we just couldn't get around to see everyone. The good news is that we'll be back in April for two weeks and then we're moving home for good next July, five weeks before our wedding! (note: our wedding date is August 22, 2009...less than a year [View Full Entry]

Hello Y'all I am now living back at my parents for the rest of my time spent in Canada. The move was pretty smooth other than the torrential downpour that we had to drive through. I have been fishing, boating, blueberry picking and seadooing, everything but working on my Thesis. Being back in Larder is surreal, never in a million years did I ever think that I would miss my hometown so much but being back here has really put things into perspective. This is just a short little update, more will follow after I get back from New York. Love [View Full Entry]

Hey Y'all I wanted to get this started here, in North Bay, because technically, this is where the adventure began. I hope you all enjoy the next year as much as I will (hopefully and anxiously). I have been waiting with anticipation and much anxiety for the departure date and it is now pretty much around the corner. I am headed to Larder Lake to spend some quality time with my family and also to work on my Thesis which has fell to the wayside this summer. I will be blogging while up there just to get the hang of it [View Full Entry]

Tim is an old friend of Nigel’s and his family owns a great cottage on a private island. It is a perfect place to have a reunion with his friends, Tim, Cricky, Tracey and Steve, and have a great party. We also made some new friends, people that Tim brought to the cottage. ☺ The weather wasn’t the greatest, but we made the best of it. We went swimming, riding on the big boat☺, drinking and cooking around the campfire and having fireworks during the night. It was really great to see everybody! To anybody who wants all of the pics [View Full Entry]

Day 60!!! Tuesday, 28 August 2007 Today marks day #60 of the Super60 Cycle Tour. It’s almost impossible to comprehend that I’ve accomplished more or less what I’d planned to do ‘way back last fall. I realize that on many days I fell somewhat “short” of the daily goal, and I do plan to rectify that on our return - it should be easy enough to put in a few more cycling days around Ottawa to fill in the gaps. Meanwhile we are both eager to get home, check our bills, etc.,etc. (How mundane!) Actually, if the weather was cooperating (and [View Full Entry]

Kate Pace and Beyond Monday, 27 August 2007 Today I thought I should give Silver another try. I was planning to go on the Kate Pace Trail, which is a 12-kilometre recreational path along the southern portion of North Bay. It’s named after a local gal who was a very good downhill skier - I believe she’s won quite a few races in her time. It’s also part of the Trans Canada Trail system. It’s a very nice trail, and begins very close to our hotel. The only complaint I have about it is that the pathway for cyclists is not [View Full Entry]

Final Hotel Destination! Sunday, 26 August 2007 Today we left for North Bay, our final destination before home. I took Panna for a 2-kilometre walk this morning while Bob packed the van, so I needed to cycle “only” about 48 kilometres for my goal. So after lunch in a town called Sturgeon Falls, I asked Bob to drop me off at their tourism office, from where I took a little side-trip up & back a minor highway, then rode east on the Trans Canada Highway, Hwy 17, to North Bay. It was a pretty decent ride, with one or two fairly [View Full Entry]

We have had a stretch of no internet access. Let me try to bring you up to date on our travels. We finished our stay in the Maritimes (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island) in Shediac. Shediac is a small town on the southwestern coast of NB not far from Moncton. The area is heavily French and many of the people in the campground we were in were French speaking. We spent two days there with great weather - mid-70's and sunny. Went on the “Lobster Tales” cruise the first day. They take you out into the harbor, [View Full Entry]

Hello again, So the countdown is seriously on now, 3 more sleeps and then i'm off. I'm kind of freaking out a little right now because there just seems like too many things to do. But the reason for this post is because I would love it if you emailed me your addresses to hillary.sparkes@gmail.com. I would really like to send fun post cards from Greece. I know i'm terrible at keeping in touch most of the time, but i'm going to make a read effort this time, and I figure that I have 3 months to try and get this [View Full Entry]
