July 16/17 We escaped the rain again this morning and drove to Samuel de champlain park both me and mom went swimming in the lake. Then we made pasta and went to bed. To day is my birth day I woke up and had balloons in the tent. For breakfast we had pan biscuits. Then went for a short paddle. After that, I went swimming to cool down then to Tim Hortons for lunch and to Skype people. We were at Timmy's for 3 hours when we left it started to storm and the power went out. So we hurried back to the camp site but nothing bad happened and for supper we had mini pizza. Then there was a thunder storm so me and mom watched the lightening in the car. I say it was ... read more

July 16th and 17th It's Jacob's birthday. We woke up at Samuel Champlain Provincial Park. It's on a small lake and river. The sites are large and the sunset gorgeous. It's very hot 35 CelsiuS, with thunder storm warnings. It took all day to travel here yesterday. Through a lot of heat, stopping at one shady rest spot for lunch, then I got lost in North Bay and finally got us turned around and back onto the road after checking out a rednecked "Jake's word" camp ground. We drove on to the park and were well pleased we had kept going. Today, we had camp biscuits for the birthday breakfast, went for a paddle and then a swim. We're staying till tomorrow. Now, we are keeping cool at Timmy's to use the wifi. Happy Birthday Jacob ... read more

July 14 and 15 Once again the rain was chasing us. We woke up and had to pack up fast. Again, we beat the rain. I even got to make coffee. The day was full of rain and a lot of driving. We didn't stop much and ended up getting a pizza late before we got to rainbow falls provincial park past Thunder Bay near Rossport. The camp site was spectacular. We were right on the water with round platforms of smooth rock rolling out into the water. Most of the rock was pink and it was incredible. The mist and fog made it magical and also made for a wet camp, although worth it. We woke up to rain and couldn't race it so we packed up wet and tired. So today we didn't get ... read more

We took no photos of the area today because there were NO rest stops. Come on Ontario, take a lesson from your southerly neighbours. When we were in Grand Rapids, a Canadian traveller from the Soo told us he always takes Route 2 to BC every year because, in part, the rest stops are far superior to those in Canada (and there are less moose - we haven't seen a single one yet). This afternoon's leg was incredibly windy, at times blowing me from one side of my lane and back to the other. Add to this a huge amount of traffic on a 2-lane Trans Canada highway and it simply wasn't a pleasant journey. Ian experienced the same behind me, both of us criss crossing each other at times. The other problem is you don't ... read more

A week at the cottage with the family ... relaxation and bliss are truly the only words that come to mind. This is a cottage that we have now rented for the past four years but for me it was my second time there (I was travelling the other years!). It was definitely great to be back there and the week seemed to have flown by. There were tons of photo ops which always keeps me busy for a bit. I managed to finish two mystery novels (I can't remember the last time I was actually focused enough to finish one ... that's a problem and I need to solve that little issue!). Out of curiosty (I really needed to know if there were pieces missing) I managed, with some help from dad, to finish a ... read more

Destination this time was a small cottage on Lake Nosbonsing (which is about 25 kms outside of North Bay). This was a cottage that my brother and sister-in-law had rented last year and my parents had joined them for a few days. I on the other hand was unable to go last year (I was traipsing through Paris!) but when the idea came around that my parents would rent it this year and that we could all join them, I was in. First I had felt like I had missed out on some good old family fun. Then add that my brother and I and his wife were all turning 40 meant that family time was more important than knocking something else off of my list of things to do in my lifetime ... heck we ... read more

Interlude in Blind Bay, near Parry Sound, Ontario July 24 - August 2, 2010 We spent a wonderful ten relaxing days at the cottage of my cousin Marianne and her husband Herbert Koenig in a little bay that ends blindly as the name indicates. We learned a bit about the “cottage culture”, which plays such a great role in this part of Ontario. Just like the thousands of cottages we had seen on the Trent-Severn Waterway the Koenig’s cottage was located right on the water’s edge and was built on rocks. Their only access was by boat. So they had to get out of their car near a little dock where about a dozen other cars were parked, pack all their belongings into a small motorboat and ride for about ten minutes across Blind Bay before ... read more

STARTING LINE-UP: Ted, Davis, Lennon the car, 47 billion bugs PITCH CONDITION: Variable, but agreeable overall. MATCH OVERVIEW: An injury-hit team faced an uphill struggle (and multiple pitch-invaders) to limp home in the end. PLAYER INFO: Both Davis and Lennon tried to take themselves out of contention, so skipper Ted had to step up to fill the gaps. Davis spent several days with a minor concussion sustained in a pre-match shower, and Lennon had to be stretchered off mid-game with a leg injury. Both are fully recovered now! HIGHLIGHTS: - An interesting couple of days...a lot of ground was covered and there were a few minor hiccups along the way... - Lennon kindly developed a flat tyre on Sunday morning in Trenton. Had to get towed to a tyre place where fortunately they could ... read more
