Team Ted in Brockville
On the stunning St Lawrence River. New York is just on the other side of river (no you can't see it). STARTING LINE-UP: Ted, Davis, Lennon the car, 47 billion bugs
PITCH CONDITION: Variable, but agreeable overall.
MATCH OVERVIEW: An injury-hit team faced an uphill struggle (and multiple pitch-invaders) to limp home in the end.
PLAYER INFO: Both Davis and Lennon tried to take themselves out of contention, so skipper Ted had to step up to fill the gaps. Davis spent several days with a minor concussion sustained in a pre-match shower, and Lennon had to be stretchered off mid-game with a leg injury. Both are fully recovered now!
HIGHLIGHTS: - An interesting couple of days...a lot of ground was covered and there were a few minor hiccups along the way...
- Lennon kindly developed a flat tyre on Sunday morning in
Trenton. Had to get towed to a tyre place where fortunately they could repair it. While waiting for the tow truck, Ted started to worry about Davis getting hungry (we were yet to have breakfast) so he decided to go get bagels at a
Tim Hortons he remembered seeing "just up the road"...well, nearly 40 minutes later when he finally returned, he realised it was little further than he recalled. We measured it when we
Davis and Dickens
Cool old Dickens-y restaurant in adorable Merrickville. had to drive past later and it was over a mile away! Which he then had to walk all the way back balancing Davis' hot tea. What an angel! (The bagel was goooooood).
As ever, the people we encountered were soooo friendly and helpful. The tow truck driver was super nice and helped us plan some of the rest of our route, he had his eight-year-old daughter with him who promptly attached herself to Davis who got bigs hugs as they left, and when Amber the lovely mechanic at the tyre-repair place found out we were going to North Bay (where she is from) she helped us plot our whole route and gave us her email address so we can bore her with our blog! We seriously love this country.
- We did have lots of good bits over the past few days as well! Memorable pit-stops include: historic
Brockville full of gorgeous Victorian mansions along the water; arty
Merrickville, with its adorable shops and cool old Dickens-themed restaurant; former capital
Kingston; and several gorgeous wee towns in the scenic
Prince Edward County.
- From Kingston, we took the (free!) car ferry over to
Wolfe Island. We noticed a whole
Trainspotting Ted
We drove around for a while trying to find somewhere to stop for an ice cream...and ended up here. In good ol' Parham. On the train tracks. Ice creams were good though! lot of little buzzy flying things everywhere on the ferry but did not think much of it... Once on the island we drove to the start of a 3km return walk through the forest to a beach called Big Sandy Bay. The walk was absolutely lovely, beautiful weather, lovely scenery...and then we hit The Bugs. Oh my word were there BUGS. Absolutely bazillions of them. All over us, in our eyes and mouth and all over our clothes. Davis nearly lost her mind over them but Ted remained zen throughout and just clamped his mouth shut and battled on. We found out that they are mayflies (bit early this year) but knowing their name does not make them any less irritating!
- Prior to another (free) short ferry trip required to continue along the highway we needed, Ted started chatting to the bloke in the car behind us as we had a thirty minute wait (we missed the previous ferry by one car! Ah well, we were first off the line for the next one). The gentleman had spent quite a bit of time in Oz so was super keen to chat to us, and eagerly imparted his local
Cap'n Ted
Ted the sailor checks out the horizon on the ferry trip to Wolfe Island. knowledge. He mentioned that he was originally from Timmins, a small city in far north-eastern Ontario...where we just happened to be planning to spend the night in a couple of days' time! He couldn't believe anyone would actually want to go there..."No, it's not the middle of nowhere - you have to go past the middle of nowhere to get there" according to the tow truck driver from the next day...but hey, we love our random pit-stops!
- Even though we got off to a late start, our drive from Trenton to North Bay was sensational. Took a VERY long way (520km) around but it was well worth the drive - and Lennon performed well on his mended tyre. Went right up around the top of Algonquin Provincial Park (we passed through the bottom of it on our way to Ottawa a while ago), along the edge of the Quebec border. Pretty remote! But still surprising townships and lonely log cabins and things along the way. Plus the spectacular scenery we have become accustomed to.
SUMMARY: A LOT of driving, but so worth it. It is interesting seeing the changing landscape between the lower eastern and north-eastern
Wolfe Island
Should change it's name to FREAKIN' BUG ISLAND!!!!!! Not sure if it is clear in the shrunken pics but we have bugs all over us here. Was a beautiful spot though!! parts of the province. A lot more windswept and desolate up here! But still extremely beautiful. Ooooh and we saw a deer! A live one!!! Posing majestically by the side of the road. Davis mentally willed him to move WELL away from the highway...but it was lovely to see him, he was beautiful. Still no moose, although from all the stories we have been hearing we probably don't really want to see one while we are driving - Lennon would definitely come off second best.
Miss you all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
