So the trip down to Niagara Falls actually only takes about 2 hours and less if you're not on a Greyhound bus. I got there at about 8.30pm and after a very short yet exhausting trip from the bus stop to the hostel I ventured out to see the falls at night. They use spotlights to illuminate them from dusk until about midnight....the bright coloured spotlights that they use are, in my opinion, a little tacky but the effect is still quite impressive. So, some facts about the falls. They are the second largest falls in the world, second to Victoria Falls in Africa. 'Niagara falls' is actually made up of The American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and then the Canadian/Horseshoe falls. The American falls are 176 feet high and the brink is 1060 feet long ... read more

Where I come from, waterfalls are common, so I had to see for myself, if Niagra would be that much more stupendous. When I reach there, even before actually seeing it, I could hear it's thunderous roar. Seeing it also was another great surprise, seeing it’s expanse, height, power and beauty really really impressed me. However, words can not do it justice, perhaps video clips could help, which I’m sorry I have none of. So I guess photos will have to suffice. Also on the way back to the bus station, came across a park with mini-replicas of famous landmarks. Enjoyed it, since I may not be able to see these places in real life. ... read more

On July 9 1960, Roger Woodward inadvertently became the first person to go over the falls unaided and survive; he was protected only by a lifejacket and an embarrassingly large amount of luck. He had been upstream in a small boat with his sister Deanne and his uncle Jim when their vessel had developed engine trouble. Though he rowed frantically Jim was no match for the current and they were soon rushing towards the falls at a trouser-staining pace. Fate and Lady Luck must have had a soft spot for children that day as Deanne was rescued a mere six metres from the edge of the Horseshoe Falls. Both Roger and Jim however went over the edge where Fate delivered the ultimate kick in the teeth to Jim by robbing him of this process of existence ... read more

We woke on Friday the 15th of September and went in search of the famous Niagara Falls. We managed to avoid the parking stations (including the apparant free one in Lonely Planet which is now $10) and found a secluded park for free about 1km from the falls. Whilst driving around looking for the car space we drove past the falls and it was amazing to see the spray coming off the water. Shane had to turn on the windscreen wipers and people on the side of the road were wearing attractive vinyl ponchos. Upon catching our first glimpse of the Falls we were both totally amazed by the power and amount of water going over every second. It is so much more amazing in person and thinking of all the people that have been over ... read more

We had started out in Chicago the night before & caught an overnight Amtrak train through Toledo, Cleveland arriving in Buffalo in the morning. The train was spacious & the seats reclined without invading other passengers space but they were not very comfortable & very hard to sleep on. When we rolled into Buffalo in the morning we realised that most of the passengers alighting here were also on their way to Niagara but rather than catching a local bus for the forty minute journey to Niagara they were waiting seven hours for the next train there instead. They had settled on the wooden benches in the waiting room & did look slightly more comfortable than they were on the train. We caught the bus into town through the run down areas & then another onto ... read more

We visited both the US and Canadian side of Niagara Falls. It is a huge amount of water going over the falls. Scott and I were drenched by the mist twice, once at the bottom of the US falls and the other time walking on the Canadian side. I was not impressed by the light show at night and the photos from night were not that great.... read more

After a glorious stay in Boston, our next significant destination was Niagara Falls. However, between Boston and Niagara lay nearly 600 miles, two nights of camping and, using our somewhat less direct and more scenic route, 3 states. The journey itself doesn’t warrant an entire blog, so I will just fill you in on the highlights en-route to the falls. Our first night’s stay was in Portland, Maine, home of the quite frankly delicious ‘Maine Lobster’. We decided that we could not travel through Maine without sampling at least one (each) of those rather tasty crustaceans. The lobster alone made the journey worthwhile, and all for the very palatable price of $15.00 each! A bargain, at anyone’s table. Before lobster, we took in the sights of the Portland area including the Cape Elizabeth Twin Lighthouses and ... read more

So, we're back in Canada after an uneventful drive from Geneva, Ohio. The line-up at the Canada Customs was huge and lengthy and slow but when we got to the booth they let us through without any hold up. We took a room at a smaller older motel in downtown Niagara Falls. It is very adequate and price was for $69. Then we wnet for a meal at King Davids, a kosher Jewish restaurant and bakery just across the street. That was an interesting experience again. The tables are self serve after ordering at the counter so we had to claim a place along with a jewish couplde from Brooklyn. He wore a fez? the small cap and beard and she was very ordinary but so pleasant. He reminded me a little of Cyril from Lethridge's ... read more

Standing there amidst a throng of snap happy tourists from around globe, jostling for a clear, unfettered view among the crowds I thought how spectacular it would have been to experience Niagara Falls back when it was largely undiscovered save for the native people. To stumble across this awe inspiring natural feature on your hunt for carabou or as a unexpected cherry on the top of early explorations. I pondered what it would be like to experience Niagara in the absence of like minded traveling hordes. Experience it without Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum, House of Horrors, Guinness Book of Records Museum, Ripley's Believe It or Not, Marineland, Imax, Niagara Casino, restaurant chains and much, much more. I concluded that it would have been decidely more agreeable. Sadly, In our ever increasingly ADHD and profit driven culture ... read more

Spent two days in Niagara and two be honest two days is enough. Yes its the biggest ‎waterfall around but there is only so long you can look at it. In addition the town that's ‎built up around the falls is like Blackpool with tacky souvenirs, extortionate prices and ‎bad food. Which is ok for a few days but no longer. ‎ Lets not let that spoil the falls coz they are amazing the Niagara river basin itself is good ‎enough without the two giant waterfalls. ‎ We did the "maid of the mist" boat trip up to the falls and then lost $5 in niagara casino, ‎wanted to play texas hold'em poker but everybody playing looked a bit too good.‎ ... read more
