So they say you should be at the airport 2 hours before an international flight, since you have to clear customs and all... my flight is at 8:30, so I promptly got up at 5am, showered & got dressed, and got a cab at 6am. Its normally a 30 minute ride to the airport, but since it was 6AM! there was no traffic. We rolled up outside YVR at 6:20. It took me 5 minutes to fill in my customs card for the US (btw: I'm traveling through Chicago to Munich), and then a grand total of another 5 minutes to check my bag, clear customs, go through security, and find my gate and find a Tim Hortons. I've never seen the airport so empty! So here I am at 6:30 waiting for an 8:30 flight. ... read more

TravelBlog is still acting up, so a series of maps seems more likely to stick than one large giant map. My flights yesterday were smooth, including the tedious 11.5-12 hour crossing. I was originally seated in a 3-person row with two people who were quite large, had bad breath, coughed continuously without covering their mouths, hung into my space, and wiggled constantly as they tried to get comfortable and stow their many coats, bags, pillows, etc. I'm assuming from their difficulty with seatbelts and such that they were first-time fliers. We didn't have a language in common, but they made it clear that they didn't want my assistance. Fortunately there was a seat open next to a pleasant Canadian woman from a Chilean family, of whom the worst that can be said is that she provided ... read more

Seattle for a day. Just when i thought i could not travel anymore, my mate Matt and i decided to go to Seattle for a day, well it was an overnighter but it was so quick that it felt like a day. We went on an underground tour of Seattle, it was really bizarre and one of the best tours i had been on, Seattle has raised their street level which means that a lot of the buildings are about 1/3 underground, the guide was fantastic at explaining why and all that stuff. We also went to the Space needle, but i have been up so many tall buildings in the last few weeks that i could not bring myself to go up this one, it ws not very high, but i was kind of over ... read more

This time I'm flying from Vancouver, to Narita, to Singapore to fly the A380 to Sydney on Singapore Airlines. PHEW! Over 36 hours of travel. Left YVR happy to find out my jet was fitted with pods. It was wonderful. What a way to go...sigh. Arrived...eventually...in Singapore and checked in for my flight...20 hours away. CKI guy assigned me special seating on the upper deck first row...'more leg room'...I am SO excited!!! Major brain storm on my part...I booked a few hours in the transit hotel before I left home. They were full up and turning people away when I arrived with just minutes to spare before they released my res. Such a good idea to book this. It was very peaceful. Now I am in the Singy lounge waiting for my ship to come in. ... read more

Customs and Immigration I had heard before i left that US customs/immigation were really hard to deal with, well that in my case that is not true, apart from being rude ( and i have discovered that most Americans are) they were easy to deal with. Now Canadian C&I is a totally different story, one my first entry into Canada i was sent to a special area where i was grilled about why i was in Canada, a couple of things you should not say or do, 1. I am here to see stuff 2. I am here for pleasure (really really not a good thing to say) 3. I am here to have fun ( they dont like it if you are having fun and they are not) 4. I am on my annual leave ... read more

Hi Everyone Wow Vancouver is a beautiful city and so clean. I have taken some pics for you to check out, the first day i got there is was sunny and lovely (it was only 11 degrees) but iwalked around a lot so i ddint really notice. I also took a tram tour around the city and it was really worth it as i learnt a little bit about the history, and it was good to have a break from walking. Vancouver has a big homeless problem, it really shcoked me as to how many there are, and people just ignore them, well i guess that they just get used to them, anyway it is bizarre. I am heading to Las Vegas and i think i will really enjoy that, will keep you all updated. cheers ... read more

Hi Everyone, i hope you are all well! I have been having so much fun i have found it hard to tell you all about it, so i will now need to start from the begining Japan - Tokyo Well i arrived into Narita airport and cleared through security and customs really easily and quickly, it was fantastic! When i arrived it was early morning and i deceided to take a local train from the airport to my hotel, it was only going to take me 1 hour and 40 min and was realativly cheap so i thought why not. The transport map looked kind of easy to navigate and there were not to many stations from the airport to my hotel there was no way i was going to get lost :) lol It turned ... read more

Here we are! What a great day at Stanley Park in Vancouver. Note the Bill Reid sculpture. What a lucky family. Spent time with the Baby Beluga and met some wonderful dolphins! Gabe's favourite was Spiniker cause he jumped the highest. G made a new friend named Tanner and they rocked the PNE in Vancouver. After a most relaxing stay at Terry and Colleen's, we were ready for the big puddle jump. ... read more

I'm now out of Africa and in North America. I've added some photos to all the blog entries, and I'll write this final blog entry with a few final comments of my time on the dark continent. Perhaps dark is the apt word here because I knew little about Africa before I left. I didn't know what to expect, I didn't know how safe I'd be, I didn't know how healthy I'd be, I didn't know how much I'd learn, and I didn't know how much I'd enjoy myself. In fact, I was completely safe and healthy the entire time. This is Africa, TIA, was the expression we adopted while our first truck kept breaking down when we left Cape Town at the begining of the trip. You have to adopt this state of mind when ... read more
