06 October 2015 Emma and the boys dropped us off at Birmingham Airport in plenty of time to catch the 09.40 Emirates plane and after a pleasant flight in a half empty cabin we arrive in Dubai at 19.30. From the air conditioned airport we transferred to the air conditioned metro and only got hit by the 35° heat on the 10 minute walk along the huge Sheikh Zayed Road to the Crowne Plaza Hotel where we dived into the air conditioning again. We were upgraded to a palatial suite on the 15th floor with panoramic views over the City and its skyscrapers. A good first taste of the Dubai high life.... read more

Day 1 My first night good got picked up, hot as hell booked this hotel for 2 nights first day found this website called dubizzle who its where people rent rooms on there as I didn't have a phone I whatsapp-ed them to see seeing if I could see there rooms, I found a room where a women answered the door I reckon she was from the Philippines. She told me to come to this floor in this tower it was massive I went to the wrong tower at first and ended up knocking on a family's door who looked teriffed when they answered. I did finally find the room where another family were there they said they were moving out soon and wanted to rent there room (perfect) it was illegal but everyone seems to ... read more

So I did it. I moved 4,000 miles away. Now there’s 7000 KMs of war and desert and seas between myself and everything I ever knew … And that’s fine. There’s far worse places to be marooned than Dubai: My classroom no longer looks out over a Surrey council estate, but at the spire of the world’s tallest building. There’s a pool on my roof. I’m not allowed to carry my bags up to my room without a concierge throwing a cardiac arrest at me. Mcdonald’s will deliver to my door! Yes, everyone tells you it’s going to be hot… But unless you’ve ever stuck your face in lava or been to the sun then it’s hard to comprehend. It’s a constant hair-dryer up your nostrils; a singeing-off-your-eyebrows-extravaganza, – a continuous smothering hug from a huge, ... read more

When we started planning this trip, we were not aware how much there was to do in Dubai, both culturally and touristic. Because of this, we did not allow many days here and consequently, did not get to see everything that we wanted to. This is definitely a place we will be returning to. Dubai is a city of two halves. One half, nearer to the airport, is more local with the cheaper hotels and the souks. The other half, nearer to the marina is more touristic and business orientated. Both halves are nice and have their own attraction and characters. Dubai does not have to be expensive. If you venture away from the big hotels you can find some vey reasonably priced shops and restaurants. The Entertainer book helped us greatly whilst we were in ... read more

We were supposed to be having an early start today, but having only having had a few hours sleep each, we cancelled our boat ride, and had a small lay in instead. On our way out of the hotel, we spoke with the girl on reception about the noise last night. Straight away she agreed to move us to another room which would be a business class room with complimentary access to the business lounge with free drinks and snacks included. She also agreed to provide us with a complementary lift to the airport for tomorrow morning. This was good for a ‘starter’ for our complaint. Then another lady joined the receptionist and took our details. Although we are happy with the extras offered so far, this has derailed our holiday plans a little, as today ... read more

This morning we went on the Yellow speed boat out of Dubai Marina. When we picked our current hotel, it was with this in mind, as today is Friday and there is no metro until 1pm today. Priyankara, our guide, was very good at keeping us informed of all the buildings we were passing on our route out of the marina and along the coast line. This man knew how to drive a speed boat. There were only eight of us on the boat, although it could comfortably have taken double that. When we got to the top of the Palms and to the Burj al Arab, (the only 7* hotel in the world) Pruyankara stopped the boat and took photos of each party on the boat. He has just earned himself a positive review on ... read more

A lazy morning today while we packed up all our belongings ready for our trip back to Dubai. We left the hotel at about 11.30 and checkout went smoothly. We will miss this hotel and the great service we received. We are booked into the Radisson Blu in Dubai´s Media City for the next three nights of our holiday. We have been unable to find a good map of Dubai, so have downloaded some maps onto the tablet for our journey into this new hotel and into an area that we have not ventured before. Unfortunately, Dubai is also having a lot of building works done, and the maps we have downloaded have a lot of street names missing. Result was we went round in ever decreasing circles before finding the hotel. This took just under ... read more

When we were booking this trip, we had no idea what there was to do in Abu Dhabi. We were only going there to see Theresa´s sister. Once we had booked the flights and started looking into what to do, we realised that we did not have enough time here. Consequently, we tried to cover the more popular places during this trip with the knowledge that we will probably be making a return visit within the next couple of years and can spend more time here then. Most of our time during this visit was in the 4 and 5 star hotels around the city. We did not get a chance to see the older parts or any of the waterfront. We are very much looking forward to our next visit which will be longer giving ... read more

After our slight rearrangement last night, we are off to Marina Mall this morning. Not too worried about the actual mall, but they have a sky tower above it that have some great views over Abu Dhabi. Mick suggested we should have a coffee here. When we looked at all the great cakes on offer, we each ordered piece of chocolate fudge cake each – bad mistake. The café rotates very slowly, so we took regular photos. Once we had finished our drinks and cakes, we walked the rest of the way around to get the complete set of photos. We had a 2pm booking at the 5* Emirates Palace next door to the mall for a very lavish afternoon tea. We drove to there about 1pm so that we had plenty of time to get ... read more
