Dubai July 2 2015 So this it. We are returning to the UK for the first time since June 21, 2014. Having given up my job to go it was always going to be a life changing trip. We know we have been so lucky to have this opportunity. There are numbers of readers who have read many of the blogs from this trip and I hope in some way they have amused and enlighten anyone who has taken the time. Thank you. It has helped me keep my brain ticking. I hope you have got a picture of the many interesting people, both locals and fellow travellers, we have met along the way. We are very grateful to them and the relatives and many old and new friends who have supported us throughout the journey. ... read more

We arrived in Abu Dhabi at 4am on the 22nd after a 12 hour flight from Tokyo and headed straight to our hotel. I had surprised Matt with a really nice hotel for an engagement gift - staying at Jumeirah in the Etihad towers, opposite the Emirates Palace. When I was booking they asked if the holiday was for something special and I had told them it was for our recent engagement, which worked out really well because when we arrived we found out we were upgraded to the Grand deluxe room on the 36th floor. Our room was absolutely stunning, like nowhere we have ever stayed - it looked out to the city and to the ocean, and because we got there so early we were able to watch the sunrise which was beautiful. Hello from Abu Dhabi Airport... seeing as i am going to be here for another 2 hours i thought why not write another one of these posts to get started. My first flight was good and a lot shorter than i thought it was going to be. thank you to mum and gem for bringing me to the airport this morning and buying me a nutella crepe in the airport .. that was very much appreciated. I think i have walked all over Abu Dhabi airport at this stage as i sat for around 4 hours in terminal 3 then realised that my flight leaves from terminal 1.. to be fair the walk woke me up a bit. I really should have looked for those sleeping pods, it is so busy here every single seat in ... read more

We're very happy that our flight today was scheduled for a very civilised 1400 hours. I'm sure that Kath and Albert were also relieved that they didn't have to get up at a ridiculous hour to drive their house guests to Manchester Airport! After the beautiful weather yesterday, today dawned wet and overcast which made it easier to be leaving ... even though it was to head back home to winter in Melbourne. As always Bernie wanted to be at the airport nice and early so Kath and Albert dropped us off just before 11.00am. There is a really handy undercover short-term drop-off area which was a blessing with the wet weather. We unloaded quickly, said our farewells to Kath and Albert and then towed our bags into the terminal. We checked in and then had ... read more

There is something quite surreal about this place. It's seriously hot, over 40 every day. I like to walk when visiting places but it's very difficult to walk for more than about 20 or 30 minutes in this heat. A sandy haze has also covered the city each day. You pass from Dubai emirate to Sharjah emirate without realising but the latter is "dry" in another way and more conservative following the dictates of its ruler. It is bigger than I expected and the public buildings are impressive--all built to last in attractive stone. Under construction about a kilometer from where Lyn lives is an amphitheatre modelled on the Coliseum. I have been to the Museum of Islamic Civilisations and an information session for non muslims at the Al Noor Mosque where I was the only ... read more

Did you know that The Flintstones is banned in Dubai? They're not allowed to show it and so they don't. But Abu Dhabi do. My stint in South Africa now over, I was now on my way to London via what seemed like a joke as bad as the one above - a fifteen hour stopover in Abu Dhabi. No matter - I have a habit of making the most out of long layovers such as the ones I had in Singapore, Segovia, Seoul and Dusseldorf. Arriving in Abu Dhabi at 7.30am and departing for London at 2.00am the next morning, I pretty much had an entire day to check out the sights and sounds of Abu Dh... read more

Day Two and we decided to split up as the boys wanted to go to the Dubai museum, which happened to be placed very handily across the road from our Hotel. The girls hit the streets for a bit of browsing the local shops and to make sure we hadn't been ripped off at the Gold Souk the day before. The heat was so intense that at times we pretended to go into a shop to browse, just for a bit of light relief. After a lunch in our rooms of camel burgers (just to see what they tasted like) we prepared ourselves for our Desert Safari. Our guide picked us up in a Four Wheel drive and after about an hours drive North of Dubai we drove off road to begin our 'dune bashing'. Never ... read more

Fabulous three night stopover on the way home at the Shangri-La, Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi. The weather was very hot but dry and so not too uncomfortable. Our hotel was great to relax in with a couple of outdoor pools and a great view of the Sheikh Zayed Mosque across the water. We visited the Mosque which was an amazing building with lots and lots of marble and the biggest carpet in the world, soo large it was lowered in by helicoptor. We shopped in the gold souk and had a short tour through the city and lovely lunch in a revolving restaunt looking out over all over Abu Dhabi.... read more
