well hello from the middle east! Here's a report in from my experiences here in Dubai. I know many of you are curious about what it is like here so I thought I would give you an update as well as reassurance that I am safe and sound. I arrived on Monday morning after a 15 hour flight via Singapore. I got here at 6am and it was bright and hot (although its still "winter"). My first experience, to show just what this town is about, was the customs queue. I have been in many customs queues and never before have I seen such an incredible cross sections of ethnicities and religions. Everyone was represented. From flamboyant african women dressed from head to toe in traditional (pink!) clothes to arabic men with the ubiqitous "dish dash" ... read more

Our next trip will be to the nice city of Dubai. I was there 3 years ago, but this time I will go with my boyfriend. I have also been warned that there has been BIG changes since last time I was there. If anyone has any good suggestions of what you really should do when you go to Dubai, please do not hesitate to tell us! We will appreciate any suggestions!. Only thing I remeber is that with a stamp from UAE it is rather difficult to go into USA afterwards. They ask me all kinds of questions and make sure to put their immigration stamp just next to the UAE stamp in my passport. More information to come...... read more

Hi again after a short time.....there was a hitch getting photos on the blog but that is fixed now. I'm back at Cate's, after my trip to Doha, with the use of her computer so I'll throw a few more photos on. Then I can clear my camera before heading off to Egypt tomorrow for the start of the next chapter. You might not hear from me for three weeks or so while "I'm on the road again....." (my theme song)! To all the people who have sent messages...it is so cool to get them. Please don't think I'm ignoring you if I don't send a reply and keep them coming. Lots of love Dee ... read more

I have come to believe that you can tell a lot about a city by its airport. This is true about Cairo Airport, where waiting for 12 hours in a dirty, stinky, uncomfortable and unorganised terminal, is pretty much is similar to the city itself. This theory is also true about Dubai International. Modern, efficient, clean and roomy. There is also a terminal 3 under construction which will dwarf the original. It's sleak, modern, unusual architecture pretty much sums up the city. Nowhere else in the Middle East, or perhaps in the world, is there a city quite like Dubai. Once a small creek side fishing and pearl village, Dubai has risen to become one of the fastest growing cities in the world. After the oil boom in the 60's, the United Arab Emirates (which was ... read more

Well. the flights from DC to London (United) and London to Dubai (Emirates) were uneventful. I give Emirates Airlines two thumbs up - in seat video and good food. The on-demand video system includes GPS maps, as well as views from cameras underneath and in front of the plane. The word that most comes to mind to describe Dubai is...traffic. I took a "Duck" tour of the city - in an amphibious vehicle that starts as a bus, then becomes a boat. After a drive through part of the city, the tour then went down the Dubai canal. It was quite nice and gave me a good idea of my bearings. I went to the gold, spice, and fabric souks afterward...and wasn't that impressed. ... read more

As-salaam alaykum (greeting) from UAE in The Middle East. I arrived at Dubai airport at 5.30am so it was still dark. I got off the plane onto the tarmac to board a bus to drive to the terminal (this place is huge) and was hit by the cold! After Singapore I was freezing and had to put a jacket on, not what I expected. After a long process getting through customs I finally found myself outside the airport and started to look for the bus stop. A taxi driver tried to tell me there were no buses just as one drove past. Got myself on the bus to go into the city where I caught another bus to Abu Dhabi (about 2 hours away). The driver was very helpful, making men move to give me a ... read more

In researching a route to Egypt we found a flight on Air Arabia that stops off in the UAE, in Dubai. "You been there?" "No." "Yeah me neither." That's how we found ourselves staying in the Emirates for 2 days. Dubai is currently heralded as the hippest city in the world. In practical terms that means open up your pockets and let the town rape you of your wad. Unlike it's Middle East brethren, Dubai is unable to suckle at the oil-lactating teat as its waning reserves expect to tank out by 2015. But not to be shown up in the arena of the obscenely rich, they've come up with other plans to engorge their bankroll-- seduce money from the world's elite. Put up a song and dance about how great a place it is ("hippest ... read more

As soon as i arrived back into Dubai i rang my mum to find out my sister had given birth to a healthy baby girl called Madison Alicia Smith, weighing in at 2.86kgs and arriving 3 and a half weeks early. I had booked leave for February hoping that i would be there with my sister for the birth.....but i guess you can't plan these things!!! I am dying to see her, i am a very clucky aunty! Spent the afternoon snowboarding believe it or not. Still seems strange to actually be able to do that in the heart of the middle east. Went to Ski Dubai which is the new indoor ski slope recently opened inside a shopping mall known as Mall of the Emirates. Seemed strange walking in kitted out in my snowboarding pants, ... read more

LONDON IRISH ON TOUR IN WHICH FOGGY-BALLA DISCOVERS THE JOYS OF TOURING Anyone who knows me will be aware that I can bore for Britain and Ireland on the subject of Rugby. This enthusiasm is, sadly, backed by little real knowledge or any discernable talent. If it were a certain J Wilkinson would languish in obscurity as a relatively successful kicker somewhere in a part of the country better known for the round-ball abomination, pigeon fancying and hard men going out on the toon in Arctic temperatures; while the hero of the game would be F Balla having made the jump from Nottingham Casuals 3rd XV (2nd XV if they were really desperate) to representative honours despite his refusal to wear a jersey looking more like a T-Shirt bought from a petrol station by an “Engerlund” ... read more

Oh how I cried! I didn't want to leave at all... actually when I was checking in (no actually waiting in a line that wasn't moving with people bribing each other left and right to take on their 5 HUGE overweight bundles (NOT suitcase, bundles...) for my flight back to Nairobi I came so very close to just running back and leaving everything in Montreal behind... but then my reality angel/demon stepped in and said "honey, that's crazy"... Problem is, I don't mind being crazy for all the right reasons... anyway... I probably won't be returning to Dubai any time soon, but it was definitly a great time. Here are a last couple of pictures of me in the city...... read more
