I have found some more photos of what the project that I am working on is going to look like. The entire development is driven around the focal point of the Desert Pearl ship hotel. This ship hotel is in fact a cruise ship, currently moored in the desert that was built at the start of the golden age of travel by a man named Rakaan. Rakaan was a young Bedouin boy who dreamt of a life on the high seas. Though he was born and raised at his family’s oasis in the desert of Dubai, the sea tugged at his soul until he could resist no longer and one day he stowed away on a departing schooner. Rakaan was soon discovered on board the schooner, but instead of being punished was allowed to remain onboard, ... read more

Well, here we all are! Gabi, Jayson and Dani have spent the last 6 months planning this trek around Malaysia (well Dani has at any rate!). Yesterday saw us spending 6 hours trawling the malls of Dubai during SUMMER SURPRISES (lots of crowds, no surprises there) in search of illusive backpacks / trekin boots / and other last minute purchases. We are now almost ready to go, cameras need charging and malaria tablets need starting but just before d day, Gabi has a Tudor Day extravaganza at school. 48 degrees outside and she is dressing in full velvet splendor!!!...mad but there you go. I hope you all get to read this and other blogs we manage to write. Someone said to me today, are you nervous...I smiled and lied NO! Still, thanks to Rach and Ian ... read more

What an experience. We have a friend (Simon from Carson Group) over from NZ at the moment. So for that reason, as well as the fact that we have a virgin Jeep Wrangler, we decided to try a bit of wadi bashing. We picked an easy route out of the off road guide, which is also apparently the most spectacular Wadi in the UAE to visit. Its byline is " The Grand Canyon of the Middle East". However we wouldn't know. The route goes into Oman so you have to take your passports, however my cousin James didn't have his with him as it is away getting a residency visa, but we thought that we would try and blag our way through with a copy of it and his drivers license. Unfortunatly the border guards weren't ... read more

The time has come to say goodbye to this lovely palace and all that goes with it! The property truly is stunning as are the majority of the nearly one thousand staff. But with anything this big there comes politics and in fighting and this is what I cannot stand about this place. Can and will any hotel ever stack up to this one? But believe me it is only beautiful on the outside. I would rather work in a smaller property where I can actually do my job and enjoy my work! I am still in talks with The Rotana group in Dubai and if all goes well then I should start at The Al Bustan Rotana in about three weeks. A smaller property that deals in mainly corporate business. More managable at 275 ... read more

DUBAI CITY - Sat 16/06 to Wed 20/06 We had an uneventful flight from Hong Kong - 9 hours or so & arrived in Dubai at about 8 PM on Saturday evening. We were met by my cousin Yvonne who has been living in Dubai for nearly 2 years & had very kindly offered for us to stay with her. She also informed us on arrival that we had missed the weekend & that Saturday night was just like a Sunday night at home which was just as well cause we were wrecked after the flight and wouldn't have been up to much!! When we stepped outside the terminal we were met by an unmerciful blast of heat - Yvonne explained that this was the norm & that in June even at night the temperatures remained ... read more

HHH in the UAE, Nothing beats Hazy Hot and Humid We let ourselves sleep in our first morning in Dubai - the temptation of a king sized bed, room with a/c and some residual jet lag was a serious sleep-in kind of cocktail. Mike had really enjoyed the pool time the afternoon before, so I was convinced that sunning by the pool (or shading by the pool for me) was a good idea for the day. When I booked the hotel room back in January, I had found a great deal that gave us an “executive” room for a good price. I knew that gave us a ride to/fro the airport but that’s all. We were really happy and surprised to find it also gave us access to a smaller pool than the main one ... read more

Yes it has! And boy was that a comfortable day. Coupled with the humidity which is currently about 70% it makes it the hottest and muggiest place to be at the moment. Apparently it is suppose to get worse as well with August the worst time to be alive. I haven't really done or achieved much since you were last on here reading my about my life. I am now back in Dubai at work, waiting, as Bailey and myself are in the process of getting residence visas here. Other than getting a drivers licence I don't exactly know what other benefits there are in getting one, but I guess we'll just have to find out. The last two weeks in the office has been some of the best this year as we have a ... read more

We got our new car on Thursday (5 door Jeep Wrangler!) so we decided to take it for a bit of a spin up to Abu Dhabi to wear it in a little bit. The drive to Abu Dhabi was not the world's most interesting. There was sand, more sand and then some more sand. They do seem to have a fettish for fencing over here and there was kilometre after kilometre as incredibly expensive fencing along the side of the road. The need for this was cleared up a little bit when I discovered that it was the fence for one of the Abu Dhbai Palaces. In Abu Dhabi we visited the Emirates Palace, which is supposed to be Abu Dhabi's answer to the Burj Al Arab. It didn't really wow me I have to ... read more

A Brief Stop in Bangkok and Some Heat in Dubai When we left Jack and Diane’s house back in March to head toward Australia, we had left a bunch of our stuff behind to help lighten our load. Thus on our return journey to Europe we planned a stop of a couple of days to pick up our stuff, say hi to Jack and Diane and get a few errands done. The flight from Hong Kong was a short two and a half hours which was nothing compared to the eight and a half hours from Australia to Hong Kong. We expected Bangkok to be incredibly hot and were not disappointed. Upon exiting the plane we were greeted with a blast of heat. Thankfully the humidity was lower so the heat was a little more ... read more

The Jimmy Dix Dave Dobbyn Concert Well we went to concert on Friday night for Dave Dobbyn ( a NZ artist who was doing a tour over here) and the music was so loud, and that base so heavy, that I can still hardly hear and every muscle and bone in my body still feels as though it has been through a giant washing machine - four days later. I have decided that it is sit down, peaceful concerts only from now on! Needless to say, the concert was not the best that I have ever been to. ... read more
