Some say (the old) that life starts at 40. I don't accept this and am starting a whirlwind tour of the world as what I would describe as an extensive "working holiday". I'm a kiwi based in Dubai so I'll keep all that are interested posted on my crusade.

So, as you can see, I am back to my old ways of updating this thing every 3 months (now 7 months). Since March, not too many exciting things have gone on. The entire month of April and May brought about a stint offshore on a barge installing some offshore platforms. I did have some photos that I managed to take and bring back but somewhere along the lines they got deleted. Good old digital cameras! June June brought about a change in scenery, slightly, in that I got bumped up to a project manager in the company. Over the next few months this slowly brought about a rise in stress levels that I didn't think I was capable of having, but with this brought about a way to counter that, patience. I still don't think ... read more

Ahoy hoy! Well aren't you all lucky. It has been less than 3 weeks since I did this last which is well outside my norm of about 3 months. The reason for it being a few things have occured that are worth mentioning and more so worth your time to read it. Okay, for the second time I went offroading with Johann but this time we went to a few sand dunes called "Big Red". These dunes are out the back of Dubai on the way to Oman and I think these dunes are considered some of the biggest in the UAE so I was looking forward to the challenge. The morning started well and continued for a good while until the navigation ability of the lead car (Johann) took us through some pretty soft sand ... read more

XMAS AS IT SHOULD BE… Xmas time brought about the need for me to get back to NZ as I wasn’t doing what I did last year (not by choice) where I spent it offshore in Iran on one of the crappiest boats you can imagine. So I put leave in to make sure it happened this year, and what do you know, IT HAPPENED! So on the 20th Dec I trundled back to NZ to surprise the family in turning up, only to find someone had already informed the family that someone in fact was not working which I told them I was, so the surprise turned into a semi surprise. Anyway, my little bro picked me up at the airport and made the trip south to Cambridge. When I arrived the weather turned it ... read more

OK, so now that I have a bit of time free I thought I would actually take the time to update you all as to my most recent crusades, which is really not much. So the last time you heard from me I was in France having a ball of a time. Since then I have started my 'new' job at the same company, where I am now based onshore as opposed to offshore. But as things work out, I have been spending a lot of time offshore. October brought about heap of rig moves. That pretty much sums that month up really. After completing one I was moved onto the next and so forth. The final one brought about a bit of disaster. The process goes once the rig is moved into place and the ... read more

On Thursday the 16th, Fab and Delph showed me round Quirebon, which was a peninsular close to where they lived. After this I caught the train to Rennes where Julia picked me up and took a small drive to a place called Saille (close to Guerande (close to St Nazaire (close to Nantes (in Brittany, west coast ish, you get the picture)) where Julia and Alex was staying while they are back in NZ for a few months. At this time Alex was in Spain on a surfing trip lapping up the sun while we were close by in France relishing the wind and rain. It didn’t matter though as it gave me the opportunity to meet his fantastic family who lived close by in Guerande so spent a heap of time getting to know his ... read more

Bonjourno, as the freaky French guy on the Eurotrip movie puts it. Sorry for the delay in this but time constraints in France meant I couldn’t write anything substantial as I know that is what everyone is after! So, the plan was to go for about a week to catch up with the French connection Alex, Julia, Fabien and Delphine. In this time I decided to immerse myself in the culture of France and get to know a few of the locals… La Trinite-sur-mer I arrived in Paris on the night of the 9th August and went to the Effiel Tower that night with a couple of Austrian girls I met on the train that randomly ended up staying at the same hostel I was staying at that night. The next day I left Paris and ... read more

It has been close to a month now since my last blog and it has really flown by despite being in the office most of the time. I am currently smack bang in between the UAE and Qatar on a job where we are drilling some holes to find out what is underneath the seabed to extend a runway on a small island close by. Now today has been a very eventful one (compared to the last 2 weeks of nothing happening) as first some scanning equipment that is pretty crucial in the operation of this job just decided to die on me after working 20min beforehand. That left me a little annoyed as it held back us throwing down the 20 tonne anchors. That took up a few hours but the most exciting part of ... read more

Yes it has! And boy was that a comfortable day. Coupled with the humidity which is currently about 70% it makes it the hottest and muggiest place to be at the moment. Apparently it is suppose to get worse as well with August the worst time to be alive. I haven't really done or achieved much since you were last on here reading my about my life. I am now back in Dubai at work, waiting, as Bailey and myself are in the process of getting residence visas here. Other than getting a drivers licence I don't exactly know what other benefits there are in getting one, but I guess we'll just have to find out. The last two weeks in the office has been some of the best this year as we have a ... read more

Why hello all! Now I realise that this diary entry is a long time coming but I have my reasons and you will find out in due course as to why it has taken so long. Now I am writing this from the safety of my home back in NZ as I am back for a few weeks on holiday after actually making it to graduation in Dunedin. The Month of April OK. From what I remember Spain was the last time I made an entry. I got called back from Spain as I was intending on going to India to do an oil pipelay job for a month or so. Oh did those plans change. When I got back there were delays in getting my Indian visa (who would have thought you need a ... read more

Valencia Another update on my adventures in the fireworks captial of the world. The Las Fallas festival is over and all is back to normal in Valenica (until the next festival starts which is in like a week or something). In my last few days in Valencia it really was enjoyable. Being with Will, I got invited to an Estrella Damm party (a spanish beer that is a principle sponsor of Team NZ) where we were treated like royals. We sat at the 'distinguished guests' table where we were served beer that they don't sell in shops and what is even funnier is the wine supplier for the night was sitting at the table next to us and he asked Will's and my opinions on his wine, as if we knew anything about wine so ... read more
