Geo: 37.0391, 27.4302I cleared some pictures off the cameras today and have posted some pictures from the past as well as yesterday, but I think you can figure it all out from the captions.Yesterday we were supposed to go to Pamukkale, but I got no sleep and we put it off for a couple days. We decided to head to Bodrum to see Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. To our horror and surprise, it was the only film in the place that had been dubbed over to Turkish (no English subtitles either). So after a month of waiting, we were sorely disappointed. Alex nearly blew a gasket. We bundled everyone back into the Fiat and took them to have pizza and then we went to the Bodrum Castle. Nanny hadn't been there yet ... read more

The last time we have written from the harbour town of Kaş. Now we are in the heart of Turkey in Central Anatolia. Again, in a few words what we have done in the last 8 days and some general impressions so far. Kaş was a pleasant stop to slow down a bit. All services were easily available. After one day mostly spent at the beach, we felt that some culture would be good and visited the Antiphellos ruins which includes theatre and tombs. The day after we went sea-kayaking over the sunken city of Kekova (resulting from a series of earthquakes during the 2nd century AD). It felt definitely better to paddle on the sea then to sit lazy on a yacht! In addition, we got a lot closer to the ruins than the boats. ... read more

My first three days in Istanbul went by at such a quick pace that they had all blurred together. I had taken in three huge tourist attractions as well as countless others. All of the exotic sights and sounds, which were unlike any I had ever experienced, had worn me out and I was approaching sensory overload. All of the sightseeing had been wonderful, but I needed a break, so I decided to slow it down a bit. On my third morning in town I ate another leisurely breakfast at the hostel and I talked about several of the sights in the city with some fellow travelers. I was intrigued by one of their descriptions of the archaeology museum, so I set my sights on it - I know, spending all day in a museum is ... read more

Geo: 37.0391, 27.4302We've had a very social 24 hours. Last night we had Amishay and his mom, grandmother and baby brother over for tea and cake and had a very nice time. We had to spend a fair amount of time consulting the dictionary, but we also played with the baby and looked at some of our Turkey travel photos together. The children also gave me some anniversary gifts. Kate negotiated for a salt and pepper set that says, "Bodrum" and Josh bought a family of five cats sitting on a straw mat. They scare me a little--the eyes are a little creepy. I'm a terrible person to buy gifts for. Luckily, Josh understands that this is my failing, not his. He laughs about it. I will, however, dutifully carry the creepy cats home to share ... read more

Geo: 37.0391, 27.4302The Tomb of the Josh. Here we are in Ephesus. We have had a great archeological find. We have found the tombs of many great leaders. We have found the tomb of the Josh--bum, bum bum! Oh no! The Josh is emerging from his crypt. He is coming! Help us! Now, view the video...if you dare!New subject: Pirated Pokemon games. If you ever go to Turkey and go to the Bodrum market, you will see lots of odd Pokemon games like Quartz or Shiny Gold. People have taken the code from pokemon games and have hacked them to make new, illegal games. I was thinking about buying one anyway because I wanted to see what other people's creations look like. They are variations of old games that I haven't played. They have new options ... read more

Istanbul is everything I expected and also everything unexpected! The openess and modernity and the size of the city amazes me!!! The hassles and the people are more funny than freaky.. haaaa!! So arrived at around 2130 at this very very very very big bus station. Took the bus 20 mins to drive to the parking spot! Found the metro easily and found HSBC bank machine as well! haaa.. Hop on the metro to get to the city centre. had to change the tram but from the metro... didn't find any trams. So, saw this guy with a back pack and decided to just follow him... .and it worked! haaaaa..found the tram and after getting lost in the old town for about 30 mins, finally...found the hostel!..phew. Turkiye Turkey is a backpacker's dream. East meets west in a land where mosques and doner kebabs coexist with internet cafes and night clubs. Barber shops line the streets with the frequency of Starbucks and, everywhere you look, old men sit idly by playing backgammon and drinking Turkish tea. Turkey's geographical history matches up with any, as numerous huge civilizations have laid claim to this bridge between Asia and Europe. One cannot walk far without seeing the remants of once powerful Hittite, Lycian, Selcuk, Persian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman Empires. Scores of great beaches and resorts dotted along the Aegean and Mediterranean make for great rest and relaxation. Or if you prefer trekking, Turkey has many unexplored and desolate mountain ranges including Mount Ararat, the supposed resting point for the Noah's Ark. The country houses ... read more

Geo: 37.9538, 27.3714We had a nice breakfast at our hotel in the morning. It was the same basic spread that we have seen at our other hotels. One twist on it was a spread made with tahini (sesame paste) and grape syrup. It was different from anything I've had before and tasted pretty much like I would have expected it to. It wasn't bad, but I think I'd just stick with jam.We headed out for the Basilica of St. John and some other ruins that are co-located with it. I'm afraid I can't report much about them because Alex wasn't feeling too well and I stayed back in the gate area with him so that he could be near the facilities. He made friends with the attendant who gave him grapes and more head pats. We ... read more
