Day 7: Return to Selcuk: Joe was here is November 1990, 19 years ago! The city has really grown since then. Our hotel does not have the promised pool, but we notice the hotel next door does have one. We are pre-paid, so we can’t switch lodging, so we have lunch at Hotel “A” and make friends with the owners, who allow us to use their pool! Good news! But first…time to check out Selcuk. We rent a scooter (quite a shift from Joe’s 1100cc sportbike back home) and ride out to Pamacuk (the beach), and then head up to the water parks south of Pamacuk. We catch a glimpse of Kusadasi, and are glad we are not getting any closer. We then set out for Mary’s house, and what a climb!! It is a nice ... read more

After the usual excellent breakfast we took the minibus to Sirince. They run every half hour and it is not far - not far as the crows fly (and there are a whole lot of crows here) but it's a steep and winding road up a mountain. Sirince is pretty - and takes advantage of this. It's full of little stalls selling honey, fruit wine and olive oil soap. There are also a load of restaurants and pansiyonlar and we were addressed in nothing but French. It's famous for being pretty, Greek and producing wine. A lot of the houses have been brought up and beautifully restored. Needless to say it is expensive to buy a restored place there are the best prospects have already been snapped up. Some attractive wrecks remain, but the atmosphere is ... read more

Today has been a blast of fun. Went riding, through Kusadasi and some smaller villages to the Millipark, (National Park). The ride there and back was pretty good, then we got to the park. A small winding paved road, with mountains on one side and the sea on the other, the whole area heavily forested with pines, oak, plane, fig, olive and various other trees, frequently with vines growing between them. It really was vastly beautiful. We stopped a couple of times so I could better take in the scenery, difficult when riding. One stop was near a small beach backed by pine forest, the other at a walking trail heading into the mountains up what becomes a narrow gorge. Got a couple of photos, one of Hilary with the bike, and one in the gorge ... read more

We spent more time in Turkey than expected, and with our flight back to London looming it was time to get a move on and see some of the Balkans. We had originally intended to take a ferry to Greece and then see some of Italy before the summer season began, however, with time running out, we decided to pay a fleeting visit to Bulgaria and Serbia. During the last 5 or so days in Turkey, we finally got around to seeing some of the places on the tourist trail - Selcuk and Istanbul. Selcuk, a Roman city, was interesting because archaeologists are in the middle of putting back together a 120,000 piece 3D jigsaw puzzle - namely the marble walls of the Consul's fancy house. All the pieces are laid out on numerous tables and ... read more

The day started with the apricot and the anti-apricot. I'm not going to explain this. Be puzzled. We saw a place for sale in Selcuk, a house in the old town, on the hill. It was rather run down to say the least, probably needs a new roof, new floorboards, new stairs, new windows and new doors. It was quite fascinating and certainly had potential, and some of the rooms were remarkably cool which is a benefit of stone walls and floors. At the right money I might have considered it, but the owner really wanted way too much especially since the restoration work needs to be done to meet the strict preservation rules on what is an historic area and this will no doubt mean higher costs to get the place straight. She would have ... read more

The best things to say about the ride today are 1. No mishaps 2. We made it to Selcuk We checked in at the Homeros, a really nice and friendly place on the hill. Had tea, ate gozleme (a sort of pancake). We are going to be here for a few days, some day trips planned, some on the bike and maybe some on the dolmus. We had a little wander around town, looked at some places. This is the area we are thinking of retiring to in a few years. We ended up at the old Artemis temple, it is a really peaceful place. It is partly flooded at present, home to terrapins and geese. It is also a great place to get a view of Selcuk over time, the column of the temple, to ... read more

Today Nessie and I took the bus from our hotel in Pammukale to Selchuk which is where you stay to go and see the ruins at Ephesus. We had a good little bus ride and listened to a podcast we have been listening to on all our bus rides...Ricky Gervais. He's the guy who writes the original British version of The Office and his podcasts are absolutely hysterical. Not sure if you've heard about them, but they have this guy who is on the podcast named Carl Pilckington who is totally ridiculous. They spend most of the podcasts making fun of Carl's outlook on life and how absurdly stupid he is. We always get glances from other passengers as we are laughing to tears in unison. It makes the time go by quickly, especially because it ... read more

5/31/09 To the children who receive this blog: Austin and Lily have loved seeing your comments and emails. Keep them coming. They miss their friends a lot. We had a wonderful surprise in the Turkish city, Selcuk, when we met another American family with three similarly aged children who are also travelling and home schooling for four months. The five children became friends, had a study hall together, and an extended recess on the beach. All five children ended up buried in the sand up to their necks by two Turkish teenagers who joined them for recess. --- Additionally, a Turkish family who were tourist watching on the beach stopped to take photos of the Americans. ... read more

Having decided to duck Anzac Day at Gallipoli - all of the hype sounds just a bit too jingoistic and celebratory - we needed to make a large-ish jump over Gallipoli, Cannarkale and Troy and we decided to go directly to Denizli by air. The price of an air ticket was TL110 and a bus would have cost us TL50 plus and taken 12 hours. 45 minutes sounded a lot better. (We will come back to Gallipoli after most of the people have gone.) When we were quoted 15 euros each for a pick up at Denizli airport to go to Pamukkale at 9.30pm we balked but, on being told transport from the airport to Pamukkale was 'difficult' we eventually agreed. That was a stroke of luck. We arrived at a little after the appointed time ... read more

Ephesus, the best preserved classical city in the Eastern Mediterranean. 3rd Century BC to to 4th Century AD give or take. Starte in the SE corner with the Basilica and Odeon, then a loop around the fountain of Pollio and Waterhouses. Curetes Way was once lined with shops and inns. The Terraced Houses were amazing to see, a look into the lifestyles of the elite in Roman and Byzantine times. Was an extra charge for admission, but very worth the extra money. The Temple of Hadrian, constructed 118 AD, depicts an interesting frieze of Medusa. And of course, the Library of Celsus. The library which had been built in the name of proconsul Gaius Celsus completed in the year 135 A.D. by his son Tiberius Giulius Aquila, is entered by way of a stairway, 21 meters ... read more
