Middle East » Oman October 14th 2007

At long last, my first road trip in the Middle East. This place was very different from Dubai. Oman has been closed off for a longer time then the United Arab Emirates. The Sultans for the most part wanted to keep separated from the West as much as possible, leading to Oman keeping itself quite traditional. The recent Sultans though since the 1970's have decided to Oman up much more. Here on this tip we got a chance to see a world much less Westernized, or at least to a degree. Once of the neat things you'll see throughout Oman are the numerous forts. These forts were put in place by the Portuguese when they took over Oman much earlier. These forts are actually still used by the Oman military! They even have armed guards (machine ... read more

Now as neither me or Kat are big fans of the package holiday it was still hard to pass up a bargain trip staying at the Shangri La Al Jissah al Waha resort just outside Muscat in Oman. why not, everyone deserves a bit of luxury now and again! The Sultanate of Oman is quite frankly stunning consisting of mainly desert, mountains and secluded perfect beaches combined with lush Wadi's dotted about the countryside. It is one of the only countries I have been to that overwhelmed me with the passion people have for where they live. As a visitor to the country we were made very welcome and everyone was exceptionally polite and could'nt do enough for you. Oman is situated on the Southeast corner of the Arabian Peninsula bordering with Saudi Arabia, United Arab ... read more

Chelle finally made it diving in the UAE. Yesterday morning at the ungodly hour of 4:30am she got up and headed off to the Jumeirah Beach Hotel to join a group of divers heading up to the Musandam peninsular in Oman. The trip was rather long. 2 hours in a bus and then another 2 hours on a Dhow. However the Dhow was lovely and Chelle spent her time on a sun lounger on the deck reading a book (one of the 22 that she brought from a charity book sale the day before :) The diving itself wasn't all that flash it has to be said. Poor old Chelle has dived in a few locations around the world and it appears that she has now become a bit of a dive snob. Anything less that ... read more

Well. relaxation at last, and no more running around...We were bumped off the flight on the way back and went straight back to the hotel for another night - the Gulf on the doorstep and mountains directly behind - brilliant setting and we did really unwind - warm sea, hot sun, lots of food, alcohol, clean clothes....absolute heaven after a month of Indian trains and dust! We didnt have time to do very much - er, except laze around - but we did manage to get a boat trip around some of the coast, which was great - wonderful to be on the water after all that dry land! And we had a spectacular sunset...... read more

Well, our time in Muscat has been great. Pure indulgence in a luxury hotel by the sea. And just when we thought it was all over, we ended up being bumped off our flight home and back in the hotel for another full day. Could be worse! I think we should manage another cocktail while watching the sun go down and a morning swim in the sea.... Beats doing the unpacking and washing I had planned for tomorrow.... read more

I have been to Oman once, in the winter of 2006. Oman was full of surprises, the beaches are beautiful, there are some big mountains in and around Muscat. You can obtain a tourist visa upon arrival at Muscats Saeb Int'l airport for appx. us $35 if I remember correctly and it is good for 30 days. The prices are about the same as in Dubai so it will not be extremely backpacker friendly, however the locals are very friendly towards all "westerners", and very inviting to you they are very curious and ask lots of questions. All in all I would love to return to Oman one day soon and explore even more of the country.... read more

This was my first adventure out of Dubai without emirates......and our...first holiday together. And we both survived and also had a very surprisingly great time and fell in love with a country that is rarely visited but has sooo much to offer in beauty, over whelming hospitality and crazy adventures for the unexpecting tourists.....it is a deffinete must see for the middle east. Its only a quick 40 minute flt to muscatfrom Dubai but we thought we would be adventureous and hire a car and drive from the U.A.E to Oman....not an easy feat but again we were a strong team....with a good driver Dave and an exceptional navigator me.....So off we went to explore......we apparently thought we were rock stars on this particular holiday but it added to the adventure. Crossing the borders was interesting ... read more

Crossing the border gave us a strange sensation, after a burning-hot sun in Yemen we arrived in a cold, foggy place. We couldn't see more than 20 meters away. What made us wander around a lot until we could find the Oman immigration office. The place was almost deserted. Besides the police officer we could find only some Saudi's going for the Khareef season in Salalah or a few Omanis going to Yemen to enjoy some Qat, which is forbidden in Oman. After spending around 6 hours in the border trying to get a lift to Salalah (Saudis are not hitchhiking friendly) we surrender to the only and expensive bus that crossed the border that day. Salalah is the heaven on earth for the Arabs, the monsoon coming from India during the 3 months of summer, ... read more

Muscat, Oman is right out of “1001 Arabian Nights” with its walled old town, forts and the oldest souq or marketplace in Oman. Set in amongst jagged mountains next to the port, the mystery of this city remains because it is virtually unknown to Westerners. We chose to take a sunset cruise on an ancient Dhow boat used for centuries in this part of the world. We glided along the coast and saw where future development is planned on their beautiful beaches. The next day, a small group of us went by 4x4 vehicles through the mountains and off road terrain to a giant sinkhole, a wadi (a water spring oasis nestled between two steep mountains) and a white sand beach. Our Omani guides handled a flat tire within 15 minutes, leading us to believe this ... read more

Howdy all, (New pics to be added still when I get Carmels memory stick) Just returned from Oman late last night, it fact it was a miracle we returned at all as we got hopelessly lost trying to find Sharjah airport in our hire car and only checked in about 20 mins before take off.... Oman was a wicked holiday from start to finish. The first country I have seen in this region that hasn't over developed to the extent where it has lost it's original identity. It is a slow relaxed country that still relies on fishing as it's main industry - and whilst the signs are there that it will soon be 'Dubai-fied', at the moment it is a stunning country with beautiful scenary and approach to life. Anyhows, enough of the slightly pretentious ... read more
