I admit that two years overseas have definitely compromised my competencies in a few “Americanisms.” I can’t tell you who won the Rose Bowl and my March Madness bracket was unfathomably pathetic. I probably couldn’t even tell you what MLB even stands for anymore. I don't know which agnst-filled popstar did what, where last week. Anchorman is affirmatively the last movie I can confidently quote. My iPod hasn’t been synced in something like a year; I had to have a Jordanian cab driver identify Chris Brown’s “Forever” yesterday which I painstakingly proceeded to locate and play on repeat in a sad attempt to reconnect with Western pop culture. The most shameful regression though has to be my grasp of the English language. When I was 17 I scored a full 800 on the English writing section ... read more

Swimming in The Dead Sea is one of those remarkable experiences never to forget. You walk into the sea as normal but then try to sit or lie down and bounce straight to the surface, like on a spring, feeling bouyant. The stories about being able to read a paper or drink while swimming really are true. The other amazing thing about swimming there is that we were just a few miles from the Hebron Hills of the West Bank and Jerusalem was only 10km away! A few of us decided to try the Dead Sea mud and caked ourselves with the stuff, much like sump oil. We were covered head to foot in black, gooey stuff, which had to set for 20 minutes before we washed it off. Needless to say we were all boiling ... read more

Today was a massive day. We joined our tour group in the morning at about 9am at the Shepherd Hotel in Amman. They had all only just arrived from the UK at about 2am. We were the only people doing a land only trip so we were in a pretty good state compared to all of them. There were about 14 people on the tour and only one other man so Dave was in women heaven. Unfortunately most of the ladies who were on the trip were a little only ( a group there as a 50th b'day present to themselves). We all hopped on a bus and then headed off towards the first stop of the day at Mt Nebo. Mt Nebo is supposedly the mountain where Moses died, within sight of the promised ... read more

Hi guys! Well here we are in long awaited Jordan - we have been so busy, making the most of our 11 days in this amazing place. Our overnight flight was uneventful (thanks to those little pink pills) and we even managed to get a bit of sleep in our cramped bmi economy class seats. As promised, a taxi driver was waiting for us at the airport, holding up a sign for ‘Mr Hawkes’ After sorting our visitor visas and getting into the taxi, a strange thing happened. Our taxi driver actually charged us the pre-arranged amount! He was very kind and polite too so a big thumbs up to Jordan so far. This has to have been our most pleasant ‘airport - taxi - into town’ adventure yet. The first thing that I noticed about ... read more

Hey everyone, it has been a little while since I last posted because I thought I would give your eyes a break after writing a book about my Eid trip. Everything has been going well here and I just finished my midterm which only took a measly 3 and 1/2 hours to complete. Classes are going well and I feel like I am really getting a grasp on the language. I was in the French Cultural Center (where I take Amiyya classes) talking to one of my friends in Arabic and a group of Jordanians interrupted us to say that we sounded fluent and spoke just like they did which although probably not true was nice to hear none the less. I felt the need to write another entry because I just got back from a ... read more

The next day we drove south and visited Madaba where there is a church with an ancient mosaic map of the Middle East set in the floor and Mount Nebo from where Moses is reputed to have first seen the Promised Land. Then down through some magnificent scenery to the Dead Sea. Ian wanted a photo of the vehicles set against the sea so we found a place where we could get down to the water. Camilla, Jeremy and I thought it too good an opportunity to miss and went for a ‘swim’. The water is so buoyant being 30% salt that you just sit on the top and bob about. We then showered off with our camping showers - garden sprays! Very useful. We drove, again through the most beautiful wild countryside up to Karak ... read more

Hey, So I must apoligize for my lack of contact... internet has been very difficult to get my hands on and the time to use it even more so. Yesterday we played tourist and spent the day at the Dead Sea. It was incredible! The sensation is unlike anything else. We first arrived at this semi-resort that is frequented by tourists but mostly Middle Eastern tourists. It had a couple swimming pools and a private section of beach and showers... stuff we didn't need but it made it all easier. I think the place was named (oh so original!) "The Dead Sea Spa." After establishing ourselves on a couple chairs we headed down to the beach. The sand was incredibly hot and those few who forgot sandels had fried feet by the end of it. ... read more

Country of the Hashimite Kingdom (which means the kings are direct descendants of Prophet Muhammad), Jordan is richer and more orderly than Egypt. With phosphate and cement export, mostly to China, and aids from US for its important role in Middle East peace process, Jordanian economy is very strong. 1 USD = .7 Jordanian Dinar. Jordan's strengths is also visible in its work force. Egyptians, Philippians, and Africans fill most of the service jobs here. Day 13 - Wadi Rum Wadi means valley in Arabic. This is a well preserved national park, with landscapes resembling that of Utah and Colorado. It also contains many TH Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) sites, such as the valley where the Arab army camped when fighting the Ottomans in the Arab revolt during WWI, the mountain range he named 7 ... read more
