Thursday Night I get back from a meeting, exhausted from a tough week, and I start packing. I make several peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, buy a flashlight, some pringles, apple juice, some apples and cucumbers, and some pita to snack on. I also pack several liters of water, apparently water is expensive in the middle of the desert. We've been told to have a passport with us, just in case we're stopped at a checkpoint on the way and have to prove we have visas to be here. I pack light clothing for the day, and really warm clothing for the night. Suntan lotion and mosquito repellent go in too, as well as one of my books so I can study on the long ride out. Christina's birthday is on Friday, so some of our ... read more

Another good nights sleep and was down to the cafe to meet the driver to go to Wadi Rum. We had organised the trip with a guy at the Al-wadi restaurant - it consists of an overnight stay in a desert camp including dinner and breakfast and travel to the camp and on to Aqaba and includes a tour of Wadi Rum. I believe that this is the cheapest and definitely the easiest way to do Wadi Rum but I can't get rid of the notion that we were conned at some point along the way. The cost was 50 JD each but I know that a lot of camps charge 25 jd a night to stay there anyway so with that in mind it wasn't so bad. Martin, Aina and myself was continuing on to ... read more

28 Aug - we're in Lawrence of Arabia country, hence the TE Lawrence quote! We drive to Wadi Rum this morning - even more spectacular scenery. I must find some different superlatives to use! Jagged, rugged jebels rise from the desert sands. This is completely unique scenery, in a similar way to Cappadocia - it's not like the Alps, Dolomites, Carpathians, etc and other such amazing mountainous areas. I'm almost sick with the anticipation of our camel trek. These animals are HUGE and I seem to be allocated the biggest beast. However, I get on ok...without falling off (it's a long way down if I did) and manage to survive 3 HOURS trekking across Wadi Rum - no bad for a lass who's never been on the back of a horse or even a donkey before!!!!!! ... read more

Wadi Rum - land of dramatic canyons, red scorched sands, and heat-stroke impaired tourists. Touted as the most dramatic desert scenery, ever, its one of those must-sees on any Jordan itinerary. Its also the hang out spot of the Bedouin (as is much of the desert area in Jordan), those mysterious nomads of the desert that feature in the rare oppressed minority section of the Lonely Planet of every Middle Eastern country. The typical tourist activity in Wadi Rum is to hire a Bedouin guide to take you tromping across the desert, either in a 4WD jeep or a camel. Camping out under the desert sky with the hospitality of a Bedouin camp is another favourite, while the adventurous enjoy rigourous scrambles up the gargantuan rocky hills scattered across the desert. We started our day though ... read more

The only way to see Wadi-Rum is with a guide. We book a 4x4 tour from the hostel in Petra but unfortunately it seemed like nobody else was going so we had to pay a slightly higher 45 JD per person for a private car. When we got to Wadi Rum however the guide had a Japanese couple that was to be in our group, but since they couldn’t refund us any money we decided to demand a private car anyways. We justified it by thinking that we would want to hike around and take our time all day at the sites before reaching the overnight Bedouin camp. It tuns out we have to wait for the couple and vice versa as the drivers decided to be best buddies anyways so Japanese Couple is with us ... read more

Seeing Wadi Rum was one of the things I was most looking forward to on this trip, and I think it surpassed my high expectations. There's such an incredible romance to the desert, especially in Arabia. Unlike the undulating sand dunes of The Sahara, Wadi Rum is full of majestic rock mountains, canyons and gorges. One of the guys in our trip described the rocks as looking like melted candle wax, and I think this was apt. The rock appears orange or red but on close inspection is a spectrum of colours - ochre, brown, yellow, pink. The sand is a rose pink and it's already entrenched itself through all our clothes and shoes - an eternal reminder of our stay under the desert's vast sky. To see Wadi Rum, we took 4WDrives and spent the ... read more
