Our flight from Cairo to Istanbul was easy and we enjoyed Egypt Air except that I think it was the most turbulent we have ever encountered! The airport in Istanbul was mobbed with incoming visitors but was fairly efficient. It already felt like a different world! Getting from the airport into the tourist part of the city proved easy also using the super efficient tram system there. I have to say, everywhere we have been in Asia (Bali excluded because most natives there don't travel around the Island), the Middle East, and Eastern Europe has really great public tranportation which most [View Full Entry]

Well it's about time I write again and give you an update of our whereabouts and dealings. We recently flew from Cairo to Istanbul Turkey for I think the last leg of this trip, after spending almost 3 weeks in Egypt. We had not intended to go there so it's interesting that we ended up there. And I must say that the whole experience was rather a 'mýxed bag' for us in that there were some great highlights and also some real hassles. To most of you I would say, if you want to go to Egypt TAKE A TOUR! [View Full Entry]

China  Asia » China » Yunnan » Kunming
Hello, Here are some highlights of our time in China - mostly Yunnan province - in the month of June. Our first day in China and going through the border was not much fun (I was still recovering from a nasty "cold") and that day I just wanted to "go home". The officials on the China side of the border (crossing from NW Vietnam) confiscated our Lonely Planet guidebook for China (a huge book) of which I had painstakingly torn out the sections we needed knowing it might be taken. When they x-rayed our luggage they were mainly looking for books [View Full Entry]

We finally made it to Sapa in the northwestern Tonkinese Alps of Vietnam after 5 nights in bustling Hanoi. The Lonely Planet Vietnam suggests not booking any tours here and just exploring it on your own. We followed this advice and highly recommend if you want to come to Sapa that you do the same. We think you will have a better time on your own and you can always arrange tours and treks when you get there if you are drawn to that. If you can spend more than a few days in Sapa area we promise you won't regret [View Full Entry]

The Old Quarter Hanoi
A charming, dirty, noisy, fun area of twisty roads (you WILL get lost) full of restaurants, shops and interesting people.
Well I'm not going to say too much here as the photos and captions tell most of the story. Hanoi is an interesting city and somewhat entertaining. The old city is the highlight although on the outskirts of it are also interesting areas to walk with wide tree-lined streets. The opera house is near there and if we had thought of it sooner we would have attended something there as there are a variety of programs offered there. Unfortunately, we were not able to get inside to see it. The outside of the building was not remarkable but the interior is [View Full Entry]

Dalat: A big veggie growing region
Dalat: A big veggie growing region
Beautiful gardens and farms including flower and pine tree farms abound.
Definitely our favorite part of central-southern Vietnam was Hoi An with its great beach nearby and wonderful scenery of rivers and rice fields. If you have very limited time in Vietnam we recommend visiting Hoi An over Nha Trang which is a bigger, not as charming city. From this area you can easily fly or night train from DaNang south or north to get to the cities. Hoi An itself is incredibly charming, with a unique market in the daytime and a really seductive atmosphere along the river and in the taverns and restaurants at night. It was fun to ride [View Full Entry]
