October 11, 2013 Our time in Wadi Rum had come to an end (sadly!) so it was off to the southern tip of Jordan and the town of Aqaba...port city on the banks of the Red Sea, didn't really have much of a plan but thought we'd check it out...we had booked two nights there, with a spare third night that we would either spend in Aqaba or keep it as an extra night in Amman...but with the nice weather and more liberal atmosphere (i.e. pints and patios were available!) we decided to stay the three nights...haha... Spent the first day exploring the waterfront...local beach was happening, lots of locals enjoying the sand and water...had our first pint(s) on a patio which was great...we booked a dinner cruise that evening which was fun; cruised the harbor ... read more

MONDAY 18.6.2013 Up early for earlybirds breakfast and off on our trip to Petra and the Wadi Rum, WHAT CAN WE SAY!!! Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful! First off the ship and our guides were waiting for the five of us, thought we could not top yesterday but this was certainly up there. Two hour drive to Petra - through the changing landscape of mountains, colours, desert and camels walking (shackled) across the 3 lane freeway- then a 2km walk down into the Siq (following in the footsteps of Indiana Jones, amazing) and then to the Treasury, then another 1km down past amphitheatre, urn thumb etc - absolutely unbelievable the height of the rocks beside you as you walked down through the Siq, and then around the corner comes the Treasury - so beautiful! The walk back out ... read more

Aqaba, Jordon is at the head of Red Sea and the port access to Petra, an ancient marvel requiring several hours of travel. We board our buses at 8:20 and begin the 2 ½ hour bus ride north from Aqaba, Jordon’s only Port City. Along the way we learn about this storied land, how its history and people are told in the Bible and, as we pass the road to Wadi Rum, how modern tales have been told about Lawrence of Arabia. The real Indiana Jones did explore these parts and planted the seed for the movie story filmed in Petra. Petra is a vast, unique city, carved into the sheer rock face by the Nabataean, an industrious Arab people who settled here more than 2,000 years ago, turning it into an important junction for the ... read more

I was a young teenager when I first saw the movie “Lawrence of Arabia,” and fell immediately in love with Peter O’Toole as only a teenage girl can. In fact, if you mention “Lawrence of Arabia” to any woman of a certain age, she will get a spark in her eye and sigh, “Yes, Peter O’Toole.” Here was a man, handsome, courageous and strong; you just knew his swash wouldn’t buckle even under the harshest conditions. There is a moment in the movie when Lawrence (Peter O’Toole) and Sherif Ali (Omar Sherif) peer over the edge of a cliff and Lawrence proclaims “Aqaba!” I vowed that someday I, too, would see Aqaba. Aqaba today is a dusty, flyblown, rather dirty town. It’s a shame, really. Aqaba is on the Red Sea, and scuba divers come from ... read more

Aqaba is Jordan’s only access to the sea and is built at the end of a narrow fjord-like waterway surrounded by mountains on all sides. Israel is only across a dividing irrigation/stream and shares beach frontage with Aqaba. You can easily see development in Israel, but we do not know what the name of the community is. Saudi Arabia is just southeast over the mountains about 15 miles away and Egyptian shores can be seen across this waterway. Aqaba has had many rulers from the Edomites to the Romans to the Crusaders and lastly to the Hashemites. T. E. Lawrence, along with Arab forces, battled the Ottomans for control of Aqaba in 1917 and with his success, become known to all as, Lawrence of Arabia. The big attraction for our shipmates, was the nearby ancient, carved ... read more

Friday and Saturday - Aqaba and the Red Sea Jordan After our day at Little Petra and Wadi Rum Desert, next we head to Aqaba and the Red Sea. The area is quite busy as we are arriving on their weekend and because it is a duty free area a lot of people come down from Amman and other parts of Jordan for the weekends which are Friday and Saturday. As I spot the Red Sea I say a little prayer for a friend who had always wanted to dive in this Sea and didn't reach her goal. We arrived at an incredible, beautiful resort right on the Red Sea…We quickly changed and headed for the beach. We made it into the waters of the Red Sea 10 minutes before sunset and Sian was able to ... read more

It is a journey of four days time from Salalah, Oman to the port of Aqaba, Jordan our next destination. To some that may seem like much too long, but I enjoy it. I like to think of Nautica as an ocean liner, not a cruise ship. This is the way people traveled around the world until air travel came along and made us impatient to get to where we want and do it as quickly as possible. Much is lost in the process. It really is the journey, not the destination that is most important, at least I think so. I am spending much time reclining in a deck chair on the deck five promenade looking out at the sea and thinking. Most of the time there is only the sea, the sky and the ... read more

18 March 2012 4:43 local It's halftime at the lobo/Louisville game. Great game so far, happy Drew isn't injured too badly. My bracket was worse than usual- had Michigan/UNM in the final, well the wolverines lost in their first game. Breakfast got more bazaar after my last posting. Most notably, I tried pickled lemon. Some one cut a lemon into quarters and stuck it in vinegar peel and all. I ate it. I did not like it. English does not have words to describe the flavor. Yesterday, was a much needed rest day. I mostly read poolside (both air temperature and red sea water temperature are cooler than I expected, but still welcome after snowy Istanbul) I had a very nice sunset stroll on the beach. After the game ends, I will rest until breakfast and ... read more

17 March 2012 8:42 local time Final thoughts on Istanbul: Minarets are much broader than I imagined. They look skinny only because the mosques they are next to are so huge. Tigger and Lilly are really heavy compared to Istanbul cats.I explored pretty far afield in this city, and saw none of what I would call abject poverty. I woke up Friday at 2:30, packed, and met my shuttle ride down stairs. I had to check out first. When I was quoted my price, I had to explain and show documents what the right price was. Then I was told the previous price had been quoted in lira not euros. Uh huh. The hotel does every thing in euros. Whatever it got straightened out. The shuttle to the airport was quicker than I was told, but ... read more

Although it seemed like a good idea at the time, it probably wasn’t the best plan to spend my second-to-last week in the Middle East alone on the beach in Sinai, with my nose stuck in a book; isolated from reality both geographical and mentally. I was stuck between here and there – between the Middle East and India – vacillating between a nostalgic desire to stay longer and a growing anxiety to be gone already. And I had no one to bring me back to the now. I left my private beach and went to Dahab. I wasn’t thrilled with the idea of being just another tourist, but it’s there that you’ll find some of the best dive sites in the Red Sea – and it had been far too long since I had accumulated ... read more
