I didn’t even arrive at my accommodation and already obviously things went tits up. I’ll start from the top. I realised that I left my badass sunglasses and my diving boots when I arrived at Manchester. I did not tell my dad as he was already in a tiff because I ‘only’ printed my tickets off the morning I was due to fly. But if that was the extent of my worries then I would have had a splendid journey. On the plane to Istanbul there were a fantastic array of movies #thanksturkishairlines. I ended up watching United Passions and the Kingsman. The flight to Aqaba from Istanbul I met a nice girl from Finland who was visiting her boyfriend in Amman, apparently the flights to Aqaba were £200 cheaper to Aqaba and her boyfriends whipped ... read more

While I hate the idea of myself in a bikini and have an odd fear of drowning, I have had a long time dream to experience the wonders of the sea. Aqaba and the Red Sea seemed the obvious possibility to try out my dream. Partly Jordan is a Muslim country and Aqaba is a rather conservative city where tiny bikinis are only the norm in the southern resorts. Thus, I could show off my very conservative bathing outfit. Partly, the Red sea is not muddy green and cold as the Baltic, but rather crystal blue and clear - not to mention warm, making me feel a little safer that Jörmungand or the Loch Ness Monster were not to grab me from below. Therefore, before going we had booked a tour on Layla One, where we ... read more

25thApril Aqaba, Jordan After 5 days at sea we arrived in the Port of Aqaba, Jordan for what we think is one of the highlights of the cruise with a visit to the City of Petra, a spectacular attraction, abandoned and forgotten for centuries, a ‘Rose Red City half as old as time’. Aqaba is Jordan’s only seaport on the southernmost tip of the Red Sea; it is the countries winter resort because of its sandy beaches and coral reefs. It was 30 deg C when we arrived at just after 8.00 in the morning & people were flocking for the weekend from Amman. The deep water port was built by King Hussein to accommodate the imports the country needs but also to facilitate the export of its main commodity of phosphates. As we approached the ... read more

Temp: 86F 30C Distance travelled: 3059 nautical miles Aquaba is the only port of Jordan. It lies at the end of the Gulf of Aqaba. This is the smaller of the Gulfs that flank either side of the Sinai Peninsula that flow in to the Red Sea. Jordan only has a coast line of 26km (approx. 17 miles) flanked by Israel to the West and Saudi Arabia to the East. From the port you can clearly see the Israeli resort of Eilat or if you look the other way, the nothingness of the Saudi Arabian peninsula!! From the ship's deck, the most prominent land mark that is visible is the tall flag mast. This has claim to be the tallest free standing flag pole in the world, along with the one in Abu Dhabi and about ... read more

I’ve met some great people through this blog, twitter and other social media outlets. One person in particular stands out as someone whom I feel especially lucky to have met, the talented creator behind For The Intolerants, JoAnna. JoAnna and I have a lot of similar interests, as do many travel bloggers; exploring exotic lands, sampling global cuisine, merging into bizarro cultures, but ultimately we share a unique idiosyncrasy, a sort of fervor for the Middle East. A keystone in my mission being to deflate nasty stereotypes revolving around the Arab world, I found it fitting when JoAnna approached me to wri... read more

Hello my fellow travellers! So, my time in Jordan has come to an end. This was an amazing trip, even though there were quite some things that we didn't manage to see. That's how it is though, there isn't enough time to see everything in the world I'm afraid. Still, I might return here one day and use Jordan as a base to visit the neighbouring countries once the region has calmed down again and then I'll probably visit some of these places again as well as those I didn't visit this time around, there is a lot to see here such as the desert castles, the place where Jesus was baptised, Moses burial grounds and so on. After having returned home I did indeed find out that our Wadi Rum guide kinda skimped on us ... read more

Hello fellow travellers! After our booze bonanza yesterday we unfortunately woke up way past breakfast and therefore we missed our Saudi Arabian friend from yesterday. Instead we chose the not so glamorous option to eat at McDonald's. At least it did its job and got us back on our feet which in all honesty was quite shaky after a long day of travelling topped with a generous amount alcohol. With some food in our belly we then set out to explore Aqaba. I'm going to be honest and say that there isn't that much to see here but we started with the Aqaba Archaeological Museum. It's a quite small museum and it doesn't house to many objects but the entry fee was only 1 JD so of course it was worth it. The museum is actually ... read more

Hello my fellow happy travellers! Our first day in Aqaba is at an end. It's mostly been travelling today as we arrived at our hotel at around 17.00. We started early at 05.30 today and the trip has gone well except for a tedious controller at the airport in Aqaba who seemed adamant at holding up the line for as long as possible. Oh well, once we got through the control we took the bus into Aqaba where they dropped us at our hotel, Mina. The second we got off the bus we were hailed by taxi-driver with an attitude who wanted to drive us to the various sights around Jordan. We declined as politely as we could since, at the moment, we mostly just wanted to get settled in and take a quick look around ... read more

There was one nature treasure left that we had to visit before leaving Jordan; the coral riffs of the Red See. Aqaba is a perfect place to dive, snorkel or for a glass-boat excursion; the reefs are quite close by the beaches. Another plus punt is that Aqaba is still an overshadowed city, in comparing with Eilat in Israel or Sharm al Sheik in Egypt. However, I think it’s a great plus, Aqaba is not touristic, and it still kept his own signature. This makes Aqaba a perfect end of our trip. In the last past centuries, Aqaba had invested quite in its city; for example the many facility’s and the infrastructure. Aqaba was first a small, harbour village. It growth after a deal with Saudi Arabia, where Jordan, for exchange of desert, gained extra kilometres ... read more

This day would be the day that we meet two opposites; desert vs. sea. We leave the Wadi Rum and we’re heading to Aqaba, a small harbor city by the Red Sea. It was all possible; From camel riding to snorkeling, from hiking in the desert to find the best places in town. Where the Wadi Rum is quite silence, we were dropped in a living city. However, I agree that Aqaba is much easier going than the other city’s that we came across, like Madaba and the Capital city of Amman. But first, we were awaken by the sunlight after our second night in the Bedouin camp. After I wake up, I packed my bag. Hereafter, it was time for a short shower with the cold water from the water tank. In mean time the ... read more
