Well we arrived in Haifa late afternoon. What a city. I thought San Francisco and Wellington were hilly and winding. NOTHING,compared to Haifa. People drive like the demons are after them. No parking anywhere. Hope we get out of here with no altercations ? We have 3 night and leave here on the 11th for flatter ground. We spent a few hours today at Caesarea, King Herod built this large port city to be larger then the one in Alexandria. Started in 10 BC taking 12 years to complete. Very amazing. Here are some images from today. lowell... read more

We are in ISRAEL. Weather is warm and somewhat humid. Very nice. I won't go into some of the difficult issues we have encountered. Mostly logistical. We spent most of the day in Old Jaffa. Didn't see any whales try to sneak up and swallow us? Like Jonah. But Gloria was quite happy to ride a camel. He was a very docile beast ? Tomorrow morning we had north to Ceasarea and on up to Haifa for a few days. We landed in Athens on the way here. Looked like Yuma with an ocean. Vertical dry. Here are some images from today. As ever Lowell... read more

It was different from the very beginning - extra boarding security, and justifiably so, at the El Al Airline counter in Toronto as we waited to board for an almost eleven-hour flight to Tel Aviv, Israel. We must have been two of very few non-Jewish passengers on board and our flight was excellent, with attentive service from the flight attendants. We got our first surprise just as we began our descent into Israeli airspace when the young male flight attendant asked "Do you know that you will arrive at a very special time for Israel and that everything will be closed?" In ignorance, we both showed surprise and inquired as to why. We had no idea when we selected our date of arrival that we would land at the time of Yom Kippur, the Day of ... read more

After breakfast we went to Engedi having changed our plans and confirmed a taxi to Telaviv at 3pm for 800 sheckles we had a nice slow walk up Engedi and saw Connie and Ibex and a lot of bird life, even though there were a lot of tourists there the numbers decreased as we went up so there was only about 10 people at the top waterfall when we got there, you can see the evidence of a collapsed cave here with stalactites on the edges of the cliff around the side this is almost certainly where David hid from Saul and it is also referred to in Ezekiel 47 referring to the future when the dead sea will be healed. and be filled with Fish and Engedi will be a place for spreading nets. we ... read more

today we had breakfast on the run from a bakery and headed straight to Nazareth I was the navigator and we did a little tour of Nazareth before getting into the nazareth village so we arrived 10min late but when we got there other groups were also late so it didnt seem to matter but it was full of tour groups and we had to really keep moving but as Pete would say it was a moving experience. we bought a bit of hebron glass here it was good prices hopefully we can get it home in one piece. one thing that accured to me here is that a lot of the tools used 2000 yrs ago and probably 4000 yrs ago were still being used just over 100 yrs ago and it reminded me of ... read more

This morning we had our memorial meeting first on the edge of the sea of Galilee we knew of a nice spot we had seen couple of days ago with grass but when we got there it had just been watered so we couldn't sit on it so we ended up sitting on the rocks right on the edge of the sea but it was still good Pete read Luke 24 and commented on it. one point was when the angels said in v6 Remember how he spoke to you when he was in Galilee, the son of man will be delivered to the hands of sinful men and be crucified and the third day rise again." then we went back to our rooms and headed off to the Jezreel valley we went down the jordan ... read more

Yom-Kipur is the day of atonement a day sanctified in the israeli calender when like the sabath no work is done but the focus leading up to this day is a reflection of sins committed and this is the day they ask for forgiveness, it is part of a series of feasts at this time of year the next one in a few days is the feast of tabernacles and you can already see the booths being made around the place. today no cars are allowed to be driven and everything is closed so for much of the day it is very quiet and at times feels like noone is here at all, a few people are around we saw some walking from a synagogue and a few people were swimming in the sea. there was ... read more

had breakfast at our hotel in tiberius Aviv for the last time and packed our gear to go down the road to Annats house bnb which is closer to the sea we unloaded our bags and headed to Gamla called massadah of the north because it withstood a siege for 7 months from herod and then 2 roman legions came and defeated them but with heavy casualties however all 9000 Jews were either killed by the romans or fell from the cliffs to their deaths. this is an amazing area of the Golan heights and in the winter has an amazing waterfall but it was dry this time of year. Apparently Flaius Josephus was here during the revolt and may have even been a leader but he escaped and was later caught near Nazereth. we then ... read more

first stop today magdalla a relatively new excavation of a town near tiberius we had a good guide there who explained the ancient town and how it came to an end around AD70 it had a large synagogue with mosaics on the floors and plastered walls but it was demolished by its own residents when the Romans approached to make a wall, you can see all the stones and pillars that belong to the synagogue roughly put together to make a wall to protect the city but it did not keep the Romans out and we know the Romans were there because they found a roman sword and roman dice as well as all the Jewish coins etc. it was from here that Mary Magdalene came and she followed Him till his death and Resurrection, Jesus ... read more
