Today our group traveled to the Western Wall. The place considered to be the Holliest for Jews in the World. We entered through tight security to get to the Western Wall. Once inside the women in our group were yelled at to cover their shoulders. There were some orthodox Jews handing out the wrap to put on for prayers. I put one on and was given a sheet of paper with the prayer on it. I headed over to the wall and began to pray and to put a note in the wall. During that time others and I were constantly bothered by guys trying to sell little red strings. I finished my prayer, removed the wrap, and silently left the wall. I am not a religious person but for a few moments I was the ... read more

We woke up early this morning to get a start on the day in Tel Aviv. We had only a few hours of sleep after a night out on town in the heart of Tel Aviv. My group pushed through the sleep deprevation and went to view the Indenpendence Hall where David Ben-Gurion proclaimed Israel's independence in 1948. After visiting Independence Hall we travel to Rabin square where during a peace rally the Prime Minister of Israel Yitzak Rabbin was assassinated by an Israeli. There is a memorial for the Prime Minister and by the Memorial is markers on the ground where the Prime Minister, the Killer, and the body guards where standing and looking. Its amazing that a man could shoot the Prime Minister when there was six body guards standing around him. Afterwards we ... read more

The day started early as we left the Sea of Galilee. Passing date palms along the road we stopped at the Kinneret Cemetary. Upon cemetary was located on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. It was filled with date palms, trees, flowers, and cobblestone paths along the graves. Our tour guide told us about the original Zionist settlers in what is modern day Israel. We were told about how they came to this land, developed the Hebrew language, drained the swamps, learned to defend themeselves, and lived hard and difficult lives. After leaving the Kinneret Cemetary we drove a little south to an Arab village in the north of Israel near a town called Karmel. We were taken to a High School were we met Arab highschool students. What struck me was how similar the ... read more

Air Travel in All its Glory My adventure started off at 6:30 am Saturday June 3rd. My first leg of the journey from Austin, TX to JFK airport was comfortable and enjoyable. I arrived at JFK at noon but I had to wait till 7:00 pm to meet my tour group and receive our tickets for our flight on El Al airlines. After receiving our tickets from our tour leader we then had to pass through El Al's customs and security screeners. The security personnel of El Al grilled my questions about why I wanted to go to Israel. Asked me what Jewish holidays I celebrated and what did they mean. And some other personal questions. Finally we boarded the plane at 11:30 pm and were seated in our accommadations for the next 10 1/2 hour ... read more

once again I pack my stuff and go on the road. this time I'm traveling with my lovley wife Hagit The difference between living your regular life and traveling is the difference between eating supper with you family and being in the SEDER PESACH. it's all about the extra meaning you choose to give it. For me traveling is a pilgrimage thus the important thing is the way there and the feeling you get once you did the whole journey. if the Everest peak was accessible by the NYC underground then I would probably have still gone but it would not have given me the same spiritual feeling for roughing the EBC trek. I have once heard someone quoting the following Mark Twain quote as his reason for traveling "Twenty years from now you will be ... read more

I guess after 5 yrs away it would seem awkward at first to return to a former place of residence. But, thankfully, it has not. Things do change, though, and some stay the same for millenia. Thus it is in all places and, especially, Israel. The first thing we noticed was the newer and bigger airport. No more cattle car buses to take you from the plane to the passport lines. No more quaint yet awesomely complete duty-free. Now a proper gang-way followed by a lengthy walk through miles of moving sidewalks and escalators ending at a glass-enclosed duty-free mall to rival the best Europe has to offer. Then on to the usual mediocre service at the car rental desk. Some things do stay the same. This trip was billed, in what we originally planned, ... read more

The day to fly to Tel Aviv arrived. Altough it was a business trip, it was an oportunity to see Israel. When I called the airport in order to check for the flight details, I'd noticed that I had to be there 4 hours in advance due to the security check!. Arrived at the Amsterdam airport, went to the check in desk of El Al. Only difference is that this desk is just slightly different then the other ones. It was in a corner protected with bulletproof glass and there were troopers with automatic guns for protection. Security for EL AL has a very high priority. Once arrived at the 'check in desk' which was a table where every traveler gets an personal interview about the purpose of the travel, ethnic background, with who you travel ... read more

Oy, are we behind! Tuesday was busy and stunning. We left Nof Ginosar, a hotel/resort at Kibbutz Ginosar on the Kinneret or Sea of Galilee. It was somewhat painful to leave that area, because it was BEAUTIFUL! Lots of flora and fauna, stunning views, etc. The big tourist attraction for the kibbutz is an ancient boat (I think from the time of Jesus) which was uncovered as the water level of the Kinneret decreased. They spent 12 years preserving the wood of this boat, and now it is on display in a tourist center. I did not see it, but Jim went. There is a picture at http://www.biblenetworknews.com/europe_middleeast/042005_israel.html. So, after a huge breakfast spread (I should have taken pictures of the hotel breakfasts here--it is always an ENORMOUS buffet including everything from fresh veggies and cheese ... read more
