Well, we took off Thursday night from JFK on El Al. They did ask us about the extra bags of clothes we were taking over for tzedaka (charity) but then sent us through with a smile after making sure we were who we said we were. Met up in the airport with Peter from the Rye Community Synagogue, as we are three temples sharing this tour. The rest of the Rye group was on the plane; I sat next to the rabbi my friend Dan. The third group, from Barnert temple in Franklin Lakes, NJ, went on an earlier flight. The flight itself was full; and as uncomfortable as a 10 hour flight is expected to be. Did see a fun movie, then slept a bit. Landed around 2:30 pm at Ben Gurion airport in Lod, ... read more

Everything is ready I don't have an apartment anymore - I moved everything today. It's a funny feeling that I have no apartment key on my key chain. Well, from tomorrow I won't have a key chain anymore. The last two days were so unbelievably hard and tiring. But now it's behind me. So this is my last post from Tel Aviv Kisses kisses kisses to all my family and friends, those that I managed to see and those that I missed (my lousy flu last week :-( Try to have fun here too (and in Europe & USA, wherever you are)... See you in my next post - hopefully from Hong Kong. ... read more

When my sister was in New Zealand she brought me a gift: a picture book. Now that I am packing all my stuff I ran into it again. Imagine. It's after 2AM, I am tired but I make myself go on with the work, and then I take a break. I make a cup of tea. I open the book. I take a deep breath. The pictures are amazing. Most wonderful views. Places I actually intend to visit myself. Unbelievable. Then I think to myself "Am I not lucky????" OK, back to packing boxes, but with new energy :-)... read more

So many things are happening for the first time, so why not write a blog? In 9 days from today I will go to the airport with a big backpack, board the flight to Hong Kong, and start my big backpacking experience! I’ve been playing with the idea ever since I got single again, but it scared me quite a lot to travel for a long time, on my own. After all, I am not the average backpacker age, I didn’t sleep in hostels since I was 18 (unless we consider the officers course in the army, where we were 14 girls in a room. But that was also many years ago :-), and what about wearing the same 2-3 pants and shirts for 6 months??? Is that ME? But the world kept calling me. And ... read more

After a 10 hour flight, we finally arrived at Ben-Gurion International at sometime between 8 and 9 am. I didn't get any sleep on the flight, so it promised to be a looooong day. Our first stop was the ancient city of Yafo, or Jaffa. This ancient seaport has been in use since the time of greek myth and legend. It is here that Perseus slew the Kraken, as legend tells. One of the first things I noticed were the cats. There are cats everywhere. The reasoning behind this goes that when Israel first became a nation, nearly 60 years ago, there was a major rat problem. To deal with this, cats were released into the environment. Well, the cats proloferated at a prodigious rate, and I haven't seen a single rat to speak of. Maybe ... read more

We started this morning with meditation and breakfast on the beach in Tel Aviv. We then had a short walk through the city, with an eye towards understanding the history of the city from its secular origins and as the place where the State of Israel was declared. We ended at Independence Hall, where we saw a presentation about the declaration of the state and had a chance to discuss our own views of the important elements of Israeli society today. After lunch at a restaurant in the Yemenite quarter of the city, we split up for our project group meetings. The youth group went to the office of the municipal youth council. We met with the president of the council for grades 7-9. She explained their activities, which focus on advocacy and student issues. For ... read more

Our plan had been to visit Beit Hatfutsot (the Diaspora Museum) this morning, but we had to reorganize when we arrived only to discover that it is now closed on Thursdays as a cost saving measure. Instead we had a discussion about collective identity and how this relates to our next unit, the competing voices in contemporary Israel. We then had lunch in the university cafeteria. In the afternoon, we met with Dr. Nimrod Aloni, an education professor and son of former MK and education minister Shulamit Aloni. Dr. Aloni is a committed secular humanist, and offered his perspective on contemporary Israel. We then went to Kikar Rabin for a discussion of the effects of Rabin's assassination on Israel. David, Shira, and Shirel each offered their memories and perspectives on the events, which was fascinating to ... read more

On our last day in Tel Aviv, we examined the issues of immigration and foreign workers in Israel. When I was here in '95, there were almost no Asians here. Now, there are a lot, partly as a response to the loss of the Palestinian labor pool. One of the key issues that Israel is dealing with is what it means for these workers to be in Israel without being citizens. Jews are guaranteed citizenship if they move here, and Arab families who chose to remain in 1948 are citizens, but non-Jews who come to Israel need an exception from the Interior Ministry to become citizens. We first viewed a video from the Tekumah TV documentary (broadcast for the 50th anniversary of the state), dealing with the issue of mass immigration and how Israel has dealt ... read more

Most of the group went to see family or friends for Shabbat, so I didn't see anyone else from the group until after Shabbat. I slept in on Friday before going out to run a few errands. I davenned at the minyan at the hotel that evening (a Sephardic minyan) before dinner in the dining room. I also davenned there Shabbat morning, and spent most of the rest of Shabbat napping and reading. It was very restful. After Shabbat, Sean and I went to the Azrielli mall for a bite of dinner and then to see Matrix Reloaded. The effects are great, although it was a little weak in terms of plot.... read more
