Central America Caribbean » Cuba » Oeste » La Habana March 1st 2019

There are multiple ways to travel from Varadero to Havana. We could travel by bus which would cost 10 CUC per person, plus the taxi to the bus station. So in total an amount of 40 CUC, plus the transportation from Havana bus station to your accommodation. For a taxi one way you will pay average 100 CUC. Thanks to the guard of the hotel we found another option, using the collective taxi, which is a ‘friend’ of the guard who collects a number of persons and share the costs. With this option we paid 50 CUC door to door by taxi. We agreed to leave the next day around noon. The next morning, after breakfast and preparing a small bag to spend a night in Havana, we waited to the taxi. The other passengers were ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Cuba » Matanzas February 26th 2019

The beginning of a long waited travel. After waking up and a quick breakfast we went to Amsterdam/Schiphol airport for a long flight. Cuba is waiting for us. The check in and custom checks went quite smoothly and there were no delays. We were flying with a Tui fly Dreamliner. As most of our flights were not too long, we never experienced such a comfortable airplane as this one. The service and entertainment was excellent. 10 hours passed and we landed at Juan Gualberto Gómez Airport. The passport check was not much different than any other passport checks. We had to fill in a tourist card, which is a replacement for a visa for a stay of max 30 days. Apparently they are registering everyone who are entering Cuba. We had to take our glasses off ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » South-West » Geneva October 16th 2016

Autumn of 2016. Our son had one week off from school, so an opportunity to hit the road again. Cigdem would like to see the medieval village of Yvoire at Lake Geneva. We used this spot as reference to explore the surroundings of Lake Geneva. Via AirBNB we found a reasonable room. We also decided to combined our trip with a visit to my cousin who is living in Switzerland. Saturday morning we left from Vlaardingen and arrived at Spreitenbach around dinner time. I did not saw my cousin and her family for almost 7/8 years so we had a long evening to talk about the last years. In combination of a nice wine and good food and off course the nice conversation time fled and it was time to go bed. The next morning after ... read more

Europe » Slovenia » Upper Carniola » Bled August 18th 2016

Around the evening we arrived to Ljubljana. Today we did not have any intention to explore so the plan is to have a quick dinner at a mc Donalds and search for an accommodation. After our dinner we found via booking.com a nice hotel at a place called Medvode. Compared to the places where we stayed the last days this hotel was excellent. Very large room with large beds. Very clean. Nice bathroom. A lovely and cozy restaurant. Free and fast WIFI. For sure we had a comfortable stay. The next morning after a good breakfast, we checked out and slowly we were arriving to the last spots of our holiday. We arrived to Lake Bled. This lake is a emerald-green lake with picture-postcard church on an islet and a medieval castle clinging to a rocky ... read more

Europe » Croatia » Dalmatia » Dubrovnik August 16th 2016

Leaving Montenegro, entering Croatia means also entering the EU, so more intensive border checks. All with all it did not took more then one hour. Continuing the Adriatic coastal road we are heading to the city of Dubrovnik. In less then one hour we could see from a viewpoint the old harbor of Dubrovnik. Before we started to explore the city we took our lunch at the "new city" of Dubrovnik. According the locals the prices of the restaurants at the Old Town were triple and were advised to eat outside the old town. We also searched for some accommodation which was not easy at all. Due to the popularity of this town and the high season, all rooms and hotels were occupied. Also the surrounding villages were overbooked, so no chance to find any. After ... read more

Europe » Montenegro » Kotor » Kotor August 14th 2016

Montenegro, aka "Black Mountain" as expected, a country with only mountain roads. We entered the country without any special border formalities. This country was on my bucket list and off course initial research was done prior the visit. Our first stop is at "Sveti Stefan". This is a small island with a connection to the shore. It is known as the Monaco of the Adriatic coast, where these days the high profile elites are visiting the resort. We attempted a chance to look the island from close. When we arrived to the beach in front of the island, we immediately got an impression regarding the visitors. Ladies were going to the beach dressed like they were going to the theater. Also the prices of renting a beach chair were insane. 60 euros if you want to ... read more

Europe » Albania » North » Shkodër August 14th 2016

Albania was not on my bucket list, it was more an extra now while traveling from Kosovo to Montenegro. At the customs the checks went smoothly. Albania was covered by the insurance of our car, so no additional insurance needed at the border. We continued toward the direction of Kukes. A place which was on the news during the Kosovo War in 1999. Those days many refugees fled to this city from Kosovo and because of the mountainous area and no proper infrastructure it was a huge operation to support these refugees. Luckily today there are no conflicts in this area and at least a motorway has been built across these mountains. To reach the west side of Albania took us 1 hour and 20 minutes driving with nice mountains view. (it used to be 9 ... read more

Europe » Kosovo » South » Prizren August 13th 2016

After a good night rest we woke up and took a nice Greek breakfast. Or next destination for today is Prizren. A picturesque city in the south of Kosovo. According Google Maps it would take us only 3 hour from Thessaloniki. Reality showed the difference… We left Thessaloniki behind us and drove towards the north. Passing Macedonia (Former Yugoslavian Republic Of Macedonia) and entered the border with Kosovo. However there was not a long queue it took some time until it was our turn. Passport check was fine. Green card…. Kosovo is not covered by our car insurance. At the border we could insure our vehicle for 15 Euros for a period of 15 days. Now our car was insured we continued our journey. Off course we know that we don’t have to trust Google Maps ... read more

Europe » Bulgaria » Veliko Tarnovo Province July 29th 2016

From Bucharest its a short drive towards the Romanian-Bulgarian border. Since Romania and Bulgaria joined the EU, the border formalities are quite improved. I can remember that in the past we were waiting for hours and had to pay for many unknown reasons. Now we only had to pay 6 Euros to cross the "Friendship Bridge", which is on one end at Romania and other hand in Bulgaria, crossing the Danube river. On the Bulgarian side after the passport check you need to buy a road vignette, which can be bought at the petrol stations on your way. from the border city Rousse we drove to the direction of Veliko Tarnovo. A Bulgarian colleague recommended us to visit a nice village, called "Arbanasi" which is close to Veliko Tarnovo. Arbanasi is one of the most famous ... read more

Europe » Romania » Muntenia » Bucharest July 28th 2016

Late in the afternoon we arrived at Bucharest. We went directly to our hotel. We realized that the hotel we booked was not in the best area of Bucharest. Seeing the surrounding you had the feeling that you were sill in an east block country of the 80ys. No problem at all since we will spend only the night over here. After refreshing ourselves we went to the old city center. For the dinner we went to my favorite Romanian restaurant, Caru Cu Bere. Since my last visit no much changes in Bucharest, except that smoking is not allowed anymore inside the restaurants. After the dinner we met my colleagues who were living in Bucharest. After spending a short but nice evening at some of the pubs in the old city center, we went back to ... read more
