There’s a cheerless soldier keeping vigil at the entrance to the Haifa train station. He has broad, muscular shoulders and gray-green eyes and a jaw that looks like it was hacked from a quarry in Kohav Ha Shahar. I give him a bright, bushy “Shalom!” and he fingers the revolver on his belt. He wants me to unpack my bags. I grudgingly rifle through the wrinkled t-shirts and balled-up socks while he snuffs over my shoulder, the sort of banal baggage check that, I suspect, will become routine in the weeks ahead. As I’m repacking my things he waves a security wand over the sagging bottom of a white-haired retiree, proving that in the high-stakes world of global terrorism, there’s a very fine line between security and inanity. Ten minutes later I’m shuttling down the ... read more

Shalom, Sorry for the delay in getting out an update on our travels. Since were in Israel you may have suspected we had been shot or kidnapped, but no such luck. Since Tuesday morning we have visited the shopping district and Diaspora Museum in Tel Aviv. Been to Masada (cable car to King Herods mountain top palace/fortress in about mid 30's heat) and Ein Gedi (thermal spa), plus of course swam in the Dead Sea and I did manage to float. And of course Jerusalem. Sianne got interrogated at passport control, which was quite funny and I walked straight though. Don't really think much of Tel Aviv. It is the more modern city and has lots of these ugly 60's 3 or 4 storey apartment building that are in need of repair or demolition. Apparently they ... read more

Today started off as a good day. I woke up with a bit of a headache & upset stomach, but popped some Pepto & Advil and was good to go. Noah, Josh, and I took a bus to Bat Yam to meet Leore. The central bus station in Tel Aviv was a little confusing, but we eventually found our way and made it to our final bus. When we got off, Leore was at the stop to meet us, and then she took us to see her apartment. Afterwards, Noah and Leore went to her art exhibit, and Josh and I went to get some food near the beach and to lie in the sun. IMHO, Israeli girls are some of the best looking girls in the world! Maybe Spain will change my opinion, but what ... read more

So here's a bit about the rest of our days spent in Tel Aviv. Actually we've been mainly chillin’ out in the house, cause after an hectic depart from Amsterdam and the first two days straight hardcore excursions in Israel we felt quite tired and needed some time out. Guy's house was an excellent place for this, our own ;) room with internet connection, loads of DVD's around, food, tea, coffee, what else do we need. Guy had to get back to work on Monday again, came home only around 20.30, an 11 to 12 hours workday seems pretty normal over there… So most of the days, he found us lazy at home, while he had just worked his ass off in his lawyers’ office. Not that we've been just a couple of numbs 4 ... read more

I will spend the next 24 hours remembering.... the Lebanon War of last summer where friends were called up to reserve duty, and others died protecting their country the stories of the Israeli heroes I was taught as a teenager in pursuit of a love for a country I where I was not raised my friends Ben, Marla and Janis who were killed in a bombing at Hebrew University almost 5 years ago the soldiers who were kidnapped last summer...and whose families are still awaiting word of their well-being or return home the wars, right or wrong, left or right, in offense or defense, of a country I call my home the songs and poems, written or sung, in rememberance of family members, lovers or friends lost to the atrocities of what defending one's country can ... read more

I have recently gotten some complaints that I have not continued my blog through Israel. Perhaps it is because I feel like I am home, and who blogs about their home? Apparently, many people do...and so what follows are vignets of being home...but in a different way then I have been home before. Every morning I wake up in Tel Aviv, Israel's non-existent equivalent for New York. The number of times I hear Israelis compare Tel Aviv to New York is hysterical. Perhaps one could compare it to a neighborhood of New York, say...Soho...but to do so would be denying both cities of their incredible uniqueness. Tel Aviv is thriving, vibrant, young and old crammed together on pavements that are uneven, and yet remarkably cleaner than India. The streets are as likely to have trashy, russian-clad ... read more

All of my friends who had been there before were jealous, and they knew what a pleasure it is to visit Israel. And when the passangers started clapping when the airplane landed I understood what they were talking about - welcome to beautiful Isreal. The airport was Clean and bright, the nice immigration lady asked me if I wanted my passport stamped (no thanks) and the smell of orange trees greeted me as I stepped outside. It was a bit disconcerting that the taxi driver had no idea where my hotel was, but a quick call to his buddy for directions solved the problem. Israel is an interesting fusion of old and new, east and west. This is apparent in most things such as the architecture and the food. Food. Always one of my favorite ... read more

On this day we spent far too much time on the bus, but we first went to the Youth Village spnsered by Hadassah which is by Carmel, it was amazing. They started by serving troubled youth and now serve 250 youth in a boarding school type program that either are referred by social services or come from other countries and meager backgrounds wanting to move to Israel, as well as 300 youth from the area who are exceptional students who come as a day program---the school has a technical program, an agricultural program, and arts and performing arts program and a science program, they are winning awards all of the time and the students we met were truly exceptional! They havea much higher matriculation rate than the rest of the country and many students come back ... read more
