With three mysteries down and sixteen mysteries yet to see on this pilgrimage, we will need to be covering almost two per day; but, there will be no mysteries today! Sharon reminded me that most will come in Jerusalem. It is nice not needing to repack our suitcases while staying in the Pilgerhaus for three nights. As I’m writing these words at two o’clock in the morning local time, I’m thinking, again with that stupid donkey. It wasn’t the ultra-annoying morning is here bray, but one that doesn’t belong in the middle of a sound sleep. Dennis had noted that he had seen them in the morning up on the hill behind the Pilgerhaus. I thought the image might be good for the blog, but Dennis continued “He had seen someone out there taking a picture ... read more

It was just after midnight when I awoke, very much awake, and rose and spent about three hours writing the blog from our first full day in the Holy Land. I had slept quite soundly, and after finishing the blog, continued with some sound sleep, anticipating another 6 AM wakeup call that had been placed for our group. We’d missed the excitement of one of our fellow travelers who had managed to get locked in the bathroom late during the night and needed to summon help by pounding on the wall. I’m thinking that this being a pilgrim is pretty rough stuff. At about a quarter to six I awoke again from a sound sleep and asked myself, is that really a jack ass braying at dawn? They have a wakeup donkey here in the Holy ... read more

We finally made it! Actually we still have a couple miles to travel in the morning, but the hard part is over. We landed in Madrid early Friday morning after getting a combined 8 hours of sleep between the two of us the previous two nights. We hopped on the first train we could find with some false confidence that our 20 words of Spanish could get us around town. With a one-day train pass we were able to cover many of the prominent landmarks in the city including the national cathedral, eventually winding up in the beautiful Plaza Mayor for lunch. We never quite knew where we were going, which actually turned out to be a blessing because we resorted to many backroads and alleys that showed off the beauty of Madrid's less known history. ... read more

This morning we began with a visit to the Igal Alon Museum which houses the "Ancient Boat', a 36 foot craft found in the mud of the Sea of Galilee. It has been dated to Jesus's day and is the very same kind of boat Jesus and the Disciples used on the night of the great storm when Jesus calmed the waves. We then walked over to the Ginosar dock where our wooden replica boat awaited us for a sail on the Sea of Galilee. It was a very windy day. The boat rocked and pitched in 3 foot waves. One of the group broke out in praise songs and believe it or not the wind calmed down. It was an mystical experience and made the Biblical story very real. Boarding the bus we went to ... read more

Wednesday, February 12, 2014 What an amazing day! Beautiful weather and great experiences! The schedule changes a bit from time to time since they call a head and check on traffic and crowds. This morning we went to the ancient city of Joppa (Jaffa) of Jonah and the Fish fame and the place of Peter's vision of the clean things of God. This is an wonderful country. Northern Israel in very green with much agriculture and pine forests planned over the past several decades. Israel grows almost 100 % of their food supply and are the biggest citrus exporter to Europe. The cities and villages are modern, if not ultra-modern, except the preserved old sections. Highways and bridges are very new and in great repair. Every bit of the tillable land is planted with vegetables, fruits, ... read more

Yesterday we spent the day in the vicinity of the Sea of Galilee region. We began the morning with a boat ride across the Sea of Galilee. From there, we headed to Capernaum to see ruins of a synagogue that dates from three to four centuries after Jesus and ruins believed to be the house of Simon Peter. We then headed to Caesarea Philippi. We finished out the day at Mt. Arbel which lies along the famous Via Maris, the ancient “Highway 1” that connected Egypt and Mesopotamia. More tomorrow!... read more

Another miracle on the Sea of Galilee! Well not really. We got to the Sea of Galilee, also called Lake Tiberias by some, and we went swimming! While about 10 of us were swimming in the Lake/Sea, a few guys decided to started horseing around for a while, and Cameron lost his glasses, in the water! The glasses had sunken in to the depths of the Sea, and we organized a search for it. 10 people walking around looking like idiots trying to find glasses, we had given up hope until Yulan goes, "Hey, I found it!", and sure enough, he did. Heh. Another miracle on the Sea of Galilee. Till then, Conor :))... read more

This was the day we had been waiting for - our first day in Israel. We left the dock in Haifa and traveled about an hour east through the Carmel Mountains across the Jezreel Valeey into the Galilee area. Our wonderful tour guide, Tali, and her husband both grew up in the Galilee and they still own large groves of olive trees there. She was very knowledgeable and quite passionate when she described the land, the people, the history and the culture. We were both impressed with the beauty of the rolling hills and lush fields, orchards and groves nestled in the valleys. The invention of drip irrigation revolutionized agricultural opportunities and practices in Israel and land which was once dry and barren now produces fruits and vegetables exported around the world. Our first stop was ... read more

The run up to the January 12thTiberius Marathon began a couple of weeks earlier during our Hanukah road trip while camel riding near Shacharut in Israel’s southern deserts. At that time I learned an important and painful lesson about camel behavior: camels stand up back end first, then front end, such that if you don’t hold tight to the handlebar at the front of the saddle as the camel rises you’ll be thrown violently forward off the saddle and over the head and neck of the camel. The camel sits down in reverse order – front legs first, then hind legs – but the affect is the same. You are catapulted forward as the camel folds its front legs under its body. At the midway point of our camel trek, we stopped for a tea break. ... read more
