Our final weeks and days in Israel came with raw and mixed feelings. We had created a new world for ourselves, and had come to feel that Jerusalem and Israel were our home. Our life in Vancouver seemed distant, unreal. Adin was having trouble remembering his old friends. We had all made more new friends over the last year than we had in several years combined. In my case, I had made more friends in the last year than in the last two decades. Being a curmudgeon may have something to do with that, but somehow in Israel I was less curmudgeonly and more open to new relationships. With the exception of Adin, who invested much in strengthening his new relationships, our emerging circle of friends grew naturally; encompassing neigbhours, people met at synagogue, rekindled relationships ... read more

Blog # 19 – A Basket Full of Memories With time running out on our year in Israel, and with a couple of months having gone by since the last blog entry, I’ve opted here to include a scattering of memories rather than a chronological summary. Since the last entry, Aimee and I have spent much time considering where we go from here and, more specifically, whether we should, or could, stay on longer in Israel. In the end we concluded that we need to return to Vancouver for the coming year, where we will continue to figure out our long range intentions as we go. The fact that we tormented ourselves so intensely over the issue of staying or returning is an accurate indicator of how positive, overall, our time has been here. There have, ... read more

After shuffling home from the Jerusalem Marathon I stood in the shower for longer than Israel’s water shortage could ever justify and let the hot water massage away the heavy stiffness in all my muscles. After previous marathons, my body and brain instantly forgot how hard the run was the moment I crossed the Kav HaSee’um (the Finish Line). This was different. It took one very long shower and at least four hours before my internal auto-delete program began wiping away the painful memories, leaving only the highs of running the byways of my new hometown together with 1500 other meshuga’im(crazy people). By evening – thankfully Shabbat - my mind started reviewing the detailed schedule of gentle workouts provided by my running guru, Jerry Ziak of Vancouver Forerunners, in preparation for the fourth annual Tel Aviv ... read more

As always, my lead up to the Jerusalem marathon on the 16th of March – 42.2 grueling kilometers of twists and turns, hills and valleys – started with my obsessive scrutiny of the ten-day on-line weather forecasts. Ticking down to the eve of the marathon the forecast ranged from truly terrible to absolutely terrible, with heavy rain and high winds predicted. And just to stick the knife in a little deeper, the forecast for the day afterthe marathon, and several days after that, was for sunshine. Ah well, nobody remembers the sunny marathons anyway. The night before the event I went through my pre-race ritual of laying all my clothing options on our living room couch, which included the rain-resistant black Nike tights and Segouy rain jacket that I wore for the Tiberias Marathon, and my ... read more

In the story of Purim everything is turned upside down. So it was fitting that our Purim story began on the Friday before Purim (February the 2nd) - the one day of the year in which “snow” fell on Jerusalem. In Israel, the prospect of snow, not to mention snow itself, causes a frenzy. Even though the weather forecasts all indicated rain, the talk of the town and all the media in the days leading up to Friday was of the possibility of snow. We even received an email from the school advising us to listen to the news media to see if schools would be closed. A similar occurrence took place two weeks earlier when there was a forecast for rain, yet everyone was abuzz over the possibility of snow. The radio was filled with ... read more

Ezra’s 10th Birthday Edition – Blog 15 February 19, 2012 – Ezra’s 10th birthday. The birthday season began the day before Ezra’s birthday with a sleepover at our home by Erza’s good friend Ilan Sandlar, formerly of Vancouver but now living in the north Efrata neighbourhood of Zayit. The two of them had a great time being loud, crazy, and out of control. As for the rest of us – we put up with them in recognition of Ezra’s birthday. Sunday, Ezra’s actually birthday, was a regular school day for Ezra though he did have two bonus events at the school; an official basketball game in which he played hard and he “kalah sal” (scored a basket), followed by a floor hockey game that replaced his regular roller hockey game due to the stormy weather we’ve ... read more

The run up to the January 12thTiberius Marathon began a couple of weeks earlier during our Hanukah road trip while camel riding near Shacharut in Israel’s southern deserts. At that time I learned an important and painful lesson about camel behavior: camels stand up back end first, then front end, such that if you don’t hold tight to the handlebar at the front of the saddle as the camel rises you’ll be thrown violently forward off the saddle and over the head and neck of the camel. The camel sits down in reverse order – front legs first, then hind legs – but the affect is the same. You are catapulted forward as the camel folds its front legs under its body. At the midway point of our camel trek, we stopped for a tea break. ... read more

Though Hanukah started Tuesday evening, December 20, 2011, this entry starts two days earlier on Sunday the 18thwith the arrival of Aimee’s brother Daniel and wife Leslie from Atlanta. What followed were two weeks of family visits, vacation from school and other responsibilities, and travel – by foot, car, and camel. Sunday, December 18, 2011 Daniel and Leslie arrived late in the day, tired from their travels, but happy to be here. Aimee had rented them a charming apartment three minutes walk from our place located between us and Emek Rephaim. That night we had tickets to see the famous Ladino (Judeo-Spanish) singer Yazmin Levy perform at the nearby Jerusalem Theatre, a five minute walk up a steep hill. Though we had 4 tickets, Leslie opted to sleep instead. A wise choice since I ended up ... read more

It’s been so long since I’ve written a blog that I’ll focus here less on specific, time-linked events, and more on looking back over longer-term developments and changes. Also, some have responded to previous blogs with the observation that I’ve focused almost entirely on the boys, and given little space to Aimee and I. Consequently, here I’ll endeavour to include more about the “alter” (older in Yiddish) generation. At the same time, I’ll say by way of explanation, that the blog to date has reflected the fact that our adventure here in Israel is, at least in my view, ninety percent about the boys and only ten percent about us (and Rosie). Aimee’s developed what to me seems like the ideal schedule; glass twice a week in Givat Ze’ev with her mentors and friends Robyn and ... read more

While caught in a “p’kuk” (traffic jam) en route to Afula on the evening of Adin’s birthday, October 27, 2011, Evgeny Gusin called on my cell phone to say the Bat Yam (a Tel Aviv suburb) Hockey Association would be having its first ice time in Metula on Monday November 7, 2011. Evgeny is the head of the Association, which is the closest ice hockey association to Jerusalem. He is also the former goalie of the Israeli National Ice Hockey Team. Since the ice time was 6:00 p.m. in Metula, and the drive-time from Jerusalem to Metula is three hours, we decided to take the boys out of school for the day and turn the trip north into a full day outing. Six hours driving seemed a little much for one to two hours of ice ... read more
