Last minute flights

Do stand by flight tickets still exist? If so, how do you buy them? Do you just show up at the airport and wait for somebody else to not show up? Has anyone taken a standby flight lately? Where did you fly to and how much did it cost? Post advice and tips for others interested in these flights here.

Basically, I'm going travelling around Europe in summer 09. My plan is to get last minute flights.

My question is, when booking flast minute flights, do you turn up at the airport, or do you need to go through a last minute website, such as lastminute.com

I'm from the UK by the way, so I won't need a visa and the flights will only be short ones.

Many thanks

Hello Paul 😊

I moved this to the General Forum. Hopefully it will get some replies there.

Isn't ryanair really cheap with-in Europe? I remember hearing about them practically giving away seats last summer.

Last minute flights don't work out all the time, I was in Delhi my original flight was canceled and was forced to buy a full fair ticket back to Canada, apparently they are not able to discount tickets at the counter. Booking in advance and looking for seat sales is the best way to get a good price.

The only way I know how to get a standby ticket is to work for an airline. With most of the major airlines, tickets are heavily discounted and they agreements with other major airline for employee travel.

If you have a friend that works at an airline they can give them away to friends, but some airlines make the employee escort friends to and from the destinations, which is a real bummer. But once you get a hold of a standby ticket its good for a year after the purchase date i believe.

I remember there being something where you can go to the airport and then put yourself on a list for standby flights. Then if somebody doesnt show up for a flight you get to go for a very good price. You just wait there at the airport for the next availble flight to one of the places you want to go. Does this service still exist? Reply to this

I don't have any experience on standby flights, but I usually use the skyscanner website. (edreams is another flight search engine but I have found that they don't give the cheapest flights). Skyscanner does include Ryanair flights. Skyscanner searched the best deals, then you have to book the flights from the company's website (not on Skyscanner). I think you can book flights online pretty much up until the last few hours before the flight, of course it will differ from company to company. Good luck! Reply to this
