As a grand finale of birthday celebrations, which seem to have been going on for a week - and hasn't she just got something to celebrate - my sister Liz popped up for a weekend of eating, drinking and laughing. We had a lovely time. On Saturday morning I turned up with chocolate cake, which we had with coffee. Later Liz and Dad went to Montgomery for a look round the castle, and then Alex and I returned with a take away curry. We spent a jolly evening feeling rather stuffed and reminiscing about Saturday evenings watching Wells Fargo and Boots and Saddles. The photos were taken by Liz, Dad and me, what a mixture!... read more

It seemed like the first wintry day today, but we'd decided to drive round these dams and reservoirs which supply the water for Birmingham, so we set off early and arrived in time for coffee in the very nice café. Alex and I left Dad to finish his drink while we took Bella for a stroll by the river, then we met up for a look round the visitor centre before lunch and a leisurely drive round the six reservoirs. We ended up over a mountain road which reached 1600feet, the views were splendid but the wind was chilly. AND we found 11 geocaches along the way.... read more

Today is Lynda's birthday, she's caught me up again; so we decided on a trip up into Snowdonia, despite the grey clouds, and headed for Beddgelert. There's a very sad legend to this village, if you don't know, then google it! Needless to say there were a few caches to find, a river to walk along, a pub for lunch...what more could we ask for. We had a great day out, just sorry that Ineke couldn't join us too.... read more

It was only a long weekend, but we fitted in lots of activities. On Friday we picked Martha up from nursery and went for a picnic in the woods. On Saturday, after the Ballet lesson, we went to Paisley for a Halloween event, where there were all sorts of children's activities ( and for which Sophie had a days paid work helping with the organising) and yesterday, since it was a particularly beautiful autumn day, we climbed a steep hill (Beinn Dubh, at Luss) beside Loch Lomond, again with a picnic, to admire the views. Martha hurtled her way both up and down, with adventures in bracken on the way: whilst Jack preferred daddy's shoulders on the way up and walking down, exploring tree stumps and rocks. Bella and I tried to keep up with Martha, ... read more

Before I start, may I say thank you to my NZ relations for their very nice comments. Now, I had to take Alex to Manchester airport on Monday for his flight to Jersey, So I decided to spend a couple of days in Southport, about an hour from from Manchester. I had imagined golden sands and a promenade, waves lapping the beach. But it turned out that the tidal range is huge and you only see the sea in a storm. The beach is "green" which means its been taken over by marshy vegetation, and you're advised to keep off in case the sea suddenly whips you away. Luckily a couple of miles along the coast I found a lovely sand dune area, and on the way home I stopped at Formby, which has a great ... read more

We woke to fog again. Not so thick, but still there and making the world a bit grey again. The weather forecast for today was grey in the morning, but rain in the afternoon. We decided that if we wanted to do some walking in the Berecon Beacons, it would need to be this morning. The Llanthony Priory was our choice. The Priory is on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National park, and you can access a few walks from there. Zara had suggested walking up behind the Priory to Offra's Dyke, so we thought we would give it a try. The road into the Priory was one of the typical country lanes we have driven in over the last few days. You need to keep watching all the time so you don't hit a ... read more

Today we moved on to Crickhowell from Solva. A three hour drive, or thereabouts, so we took our time and stopped at the National Botanic garden of Wales on the way. The weather at breakfast looked promising, but as we set out it became quite foggy. The fog continued most of the day, only dispersing a little as we got close to Crickhowell. We got to the gardens nesr Llanathne, and began with morning tea. A pity that the sky was so grey, I am sure it would have looked stunning in sunshine. Thee are many different areas within the garden, which is designed not only to show different specimens of flora, but also to show how gardens can be sustainable, and to trace the history of plants. The area had been a farm, with a ... read more

Alex and I have just spent three days in North Wales, at sunny Rhyl by the sea. We decided to approach from the Dee estuary direction, and by chance followed a pilgrim way from Holywell down to Green field dock. Yesterday we had a look at the lighthouse at Point of Ayr, and found out a bit the old coal mine nearby. And today we made our way home via Rhuddlan, which has a walk along the tidal river where we spotted lots of birds, and a castle. Lovely.... read more

I cant believe that we've got to August already, but another birthday has been and gone. A busy one too. Dad, Ineke and I met Kate and John for lunch in a lovely café in Chirk, where we enjoyed a drink before our lunch. Home again, and lots of friends called, one after the other, with various gifts and greetings, and as it was a beautiful evening we could mostly just sit outside and enjoy it. Not forgetting a special rendition of happy birthday from Martha and Jack, who'd given me their present before they left (under a bunting decorated tree on the field). So look at the pictures and you'll see what fun I had.... read more

Sophie and the children have been staying for almost two weeks as Tom was busy with the Edinburgh festival. We've had a great time, visiting castles, a ride on a train, trip to the seaside, seeing various friends and exploring the "secret passages" on my field. They left this morning, and the house feels empty and so quiet. Though I realise suddenly how tired I feel! Here are some photos.... read more
