Well, here we are, one day to go! Slightly annoyed that Cemaes Bay is not available as a location on the Blog, must not be the metropolis we locals make it out to be. Everything now packed, rucksack naturally weighs more than i thought it would but shouldnt be a problem. Somethings you only come to realise when your planning a trip like this...you get to spend a lot of time in your local post office, which is always nice and you have to deal with an awful lot of Utility Company based noddy not rights over the phone. But hey ho. So this is it, my last few hours in Sunny Wales and my last night in the UK. 2 years of planning and its finally arrived. Pretty scary but confident it'll probably all work ... read more

Over the May Bank Holiday, we decided to make a return to Snowdonia in Northern Wales. This time we took our own wheels and accommodation in the form of ‘Brian - not sexy but damn good,’ the big blue van. At 6am on Saturday, Noogs, Sam, Hamilton, Chris and I, all piled into Brian and hit the road. What a trip. While the girls snoozed, the boys were squashed into the front seat, an arrangement that made them look a bit like the members of a George Michael fan club. Luckily us girls awoke for that momentous occasion - the entry into Wales. Woohoo! After the road signs became unpronounceable, we really began to feel like we were in Wales proper. The hundreds of sheep in the fields and green countryside made us Kiwis feel quite ... read more

Today was the day for Caernafon!!! I woke up earlyish and woke everyone up getting ready. Of course s2 slept in the computer room making it very convienent for me! Anyways Simon got up after awhile and made me a cup a tea and i had some breaky to prepare for a long day. I took the train to Chester and transferred to Bangor.Lovely train ride it was super rainy but I saw the Irish Sea and tons of hills with sheep and all that countryside splendour. From Bangor it took awhile to get a bus to the castle. Also it was pretty expensive but it ended up working out pretty well for me. Once i got to Caenarfon I asked the bus driver how to get to the castle and he insisted he didnt know!!! ... read more

We're back with another installment of the Adventures of Will & Bri! This time our adventures included two friends: Heather, an American from Philadelphia and Andy, an Englishman from...England! Both of them are teachers at the same school as us. Heather teaches Math and Andy teaches P.E. Since it was a long weekend, we decided to avoid doing any work and go on a road trip to North Wales! Wales is a neighbouring country to England. We chose Wales as our destination for this long weekend because of our recent passport fiasco and the fact that we are not required to show our passports when crossing into the country. We hired a car on Friday night (Bri was the chauffeur) and made the 4 hour trek to our hotel in North Wales. We arrived at our ... read more

Caernarfon Castle is probably most known medieval monument in Wales. Works had starter short after Wales was conquered by English king Edward I. This castle - with couple of different ones: Conwy, Harlech and Beaumaris - had a specific assignment. It was flanking undefeated Welsh people in Snowdonia and take a control over the coast. This castle in typical example of medieval fortress and it was used as a model to several computer games. Despite of Caernarfon castle is a ruin inside were organised some interesting exhibitions (in contrast to Conwy castle). While we were visited there at the castle courtyard had been a mediaval knights tournament performance. It seems quite real and obviously most of the visitors assembled and crowded together to see an event. Nice and colorful performance. Caernarfon is bilingual and we haerd ... read more

Arrr, the countryside. I will join the no doubt embarrassing quantities of kiwis who think they've come home upon arrival in North Wales - no real motorways, hills and mountains, proper beaches and wild walks... We had rented a little cottage for a ridiculous sum, and went on little trips to explore. We soon discovered that Wales had something more: castles! They dot the countryside, a testament to Welsh stubbornness. English Kings were constantly having to put down rebellions, so decided that a little fortification would do just the trick. The result is a series of well-kept structures that would make great places for hide-and-seek. This point aside, Wales is fairly normal. The language provides some throat-clearing moments. Pictures will speak more than I can. On odd thing worth a mention - as you wander around ... read more

Well, I reached the summit of not 1, not 2, but 3 mountains! During OP on Tuesday, we hiked for over 7 miles in about 5 ½ hours. But it wasn’t just a hike; we were really climbing up the side of a mountain with our hardcore boots and ice-axes. I had never done anything like it, so I really enjoyed the adventure. It has snowed more here than they are used to, so at times there we were knee-deep in snow. Also, we were nearing white-out conditions, where we can’t determine where we are because the clouds and the snow blend together. However, we navigated ourselves up the mountain very well. At times I was leading the pack creating the path. When we got to the top of each peak, the clouds cleared which was ... read more

I arrived in Nant Peris around 7pm and met fellow FC members Pete, Paddy and Gill in the Vaynol Arms. We decided on climbing Snowdon and another mountain. After pitching my tent in the campsite opposite the Vaynol Arms we headed up the road for fish and chips. Before decking down for the night we sank a few ciders outside the tents and took in the great views provided by the full moon. The overnight temperature really dropped and i awoke to a frozen tent and field. After breakfest we headed for Snowdon but the car park was full, so Pete took us to Moel Siabod which is a mountain in Snowdonia, North Wales, which sits isolated above the villages of Betws-y-Coed and Capel Curig. It is the highest peak in the Moelwynion mountain range at ... read more

I'm here, finally, safe and sound! I can't believe its actually here. I've thought about this semester for years and its here! I'm actually in a different country and will be for the next 5 months. I hope I can summarize my adventures for you all here, and if you want to hear about anything more in depth, just let me know. Or if you have any questions just email me. Also let me know if you have a problem with any ranting, because I tend to say a lot when it really isn't all relevant and travel off on tangents about silly little details that I find interesting but you may not. Actually there is probably a lot of stuff that I find interesting that others probably could care less about. Anyway, I will catch ... read more
