Today we met Mum and Dad at Barmouth for a stroll along the prom followed by fish and chips. Maisie looks miserable because there were low flying jets scaring her. It was warm and sunny, with lots of snow on the hills - and even on the road in one spot.... read more

Bails Out! It was my Birthday weekend and also it coincided with a Stag party of one Stretcho and Mikey Boy's mates. David Bailey or Bails picked Chaddy and I up from our respective homes and we hit out on the highway. Chad wanted him to stop at an off License, so he could buy some cans of lager for the Journey. But Bails was having none it, he told him "F*ck off, if I can’t have a drink then you can’t" Bails was Old Skool Team Moston. He had moved out of the Manor to Longsight about 6 years ago and settled down with his wife and kids. No one had seen or heard from him a few years and here he was back on the pub scene, a clear sign to me that ... read more

Well, I am near Bangor, in Tregarth. Actually at this moment I am sitting in the Star Cafe in Bethesda. I started hiking up hill behind Tregarth, with instructions how to come down the other side and find pub in Pentir. Great views of sea and mountains up there. Got lost several times and was given directions from friendly locals. I didn't expect such a long trek (longer when lost and have to repeat going up that hill through tiny forest). I got to this pub by one thirty, starving, only to find it closed Monday and Tuesday. Damn! Thank goodness for the blackberries I was munching along the way. I had no clue where I was, because I expected to get directions from people in the pub, how to return to Tregarth. Nobody was around, ... read more

I have been in the United Kingdom for nearly two weeks. The year completes a circle as I returned to Ray's house in Lincolnshire for a whistle-stop visit. There, I found clothes and maps of Eastern European cities and toiletries and other things deemed too heavy to bring back to Nova Scotia last December. I tucked some of them into my bulging luggage, then left the rest for another visit....someday when I pack a lighter bag. This has been an incredible year, in terms of travel and new experiences and connecting with family members. A fraction of my experiences have been captured in this travelblog. The photographs are the best part. I will pour over them during the winter months when back at work and my gypsy rovings are fading memories. But not now! I am ... read more

We had originally been hoping to do the three peaks challenge for Mandi's birthday, but when we realised we didn't have any friends stupid enough to volunteer to do the massive amounts of driving involved we decided on a cut down version, with a 2-peaks challenge being the filling in a three day road trip sandwich. We roped in Fleur and Ed and soon enough we were rocking northwards for the Lake District on a sunny Friday morning in August. There were only three of us in the hire car for the initial leg, Ed would be getting the fast train to Penrith to meet us in the Lakes on Friday night. The weather had been good to us and we'd tucked into a sunny pub lunch next to the canal in Mandi's home town of ... read more

Friday 24th July Another day in hog heaven riding railways We have two nights here in Prestatyn so we can look around the area with two main attractions close by being The Snowden Mountain railway and Caernarfon Castle. The weather forecast was still a bit iffy for riding trains up mountainsides but we decided we should do it no matter what as it was probably going to be an activity that took 2 or 3 hours. Looking outside as we finished breakfast the weather was fine with a high overcast and so we set off the A55 for Llanberis at the foot of Mount Snowden. We were fortunate to arrive at a time when there were still seats available on the trains that left every half hour and managed to get seats on the 12.30pm.The ride ... read more

OK now we are off to Wales. Headed west for the coast and tried our best to stay close to the water. Found quite a few holiday towns similar to Blackpool. Huge sections of promenade with arcades, gift shops, pubs and restaurants. LARGE static caravan parks (trailer parks) and I mean huge. As we got further south and west the towns got smaller and the scenery became even more beautiful. Stopped in Rhos Bay for lunch at the Rhos Fyncah Tavern and had some more beer. Finally made it to Dolgellau early in the afternoon. 250 year old house turned into a B&B. Barbara (also an artist) sat down and had tea with us. Decided to walk around and find a restaurant. After we made a reservation we crawled into a pub (The Unicorn) for some ... read more

We haven't seen Harlech castle inside because we got there about 15 minutes too late than we should have got there. Bad luck or just delay cause by extended visit in Gwrych Castle. That castle was build by king Edward I after Wales were conquered by English knights. Afterwards couple of times that castle had significant importance for example during the War of Two Roses king Henry VII escaped to Scotland from this castle. Harlech had been besieged for seven years. Castle is not big - size is 30 by 40 meters, it has four towers and characteristic gate. For me it is typical example of medieval military architecture. Moreover Harlech castle was build in interesting location - on the head of the cliff and very close from highest part of Snowdonia mountains. Landscape is really ... read more
