Tuesday 5 July 2022. Day 3 on the West Highland Way (WHW) from Balmaha to Rowardennan. 8.7 miles by Garmin. 784 feet Elevation gain. 6 hours 23 minutes walking. This will be called our day of the flowers as we saw so many very minute and beautiful species. With the help of the app - SEEK - we were able to identify many of them. The Oak Tree Inn was a very nice accommodation. We are in a cabin a short walk from the reception but the lovely lady, Rosemary, helped find our bags, tote a bag and walk us to the room and then had to go back to get our key. She let us in a room which had twin beds. We quickly scarfed down the biscuits on the table with the coffee makings ... read more

Monday 4 July 2022. Day 2 on the West Highland Way (WHW) from Drymen to Balmaha. 7.8 miles by Garmin. 1043 feet Elevation gain. 5 hours 18 minutes walking. Last night we had the best night’s sleep since arriving in Scotland. Alarm woke us at 0620 to start the packing routine before breakfast at 0730. We all had our bags down for pickup and started the day’s walk by 0910. The four fast walkers took a different route from town to the trail but we all arrived at the same starting point for the WHW walk over Conic Hill and down to the scenic shores of Loch Lomond at Balmaha. The first 100 yards was through a beautiful natural foliage arbor. We were joined by several other groups of WHW walkers from the various hotels and ... read more

Sunday, 3 July 2022. Day 1 on the West Highland Way (WHW) from Milngavie to Drymen. 13.5 miles by Garmin. 658 feet elevation gain. 7 hours and 10 minutes of walking The luggage transfer service required our bags out at 0730 for pick up and transfer to our next hotel in Drymen. Greg the driver sent a brief outline of his background. He is a royal army veteran having served in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Since our CPAPs were a third piece of luggage we paid 65 GBP to have them included in our group luggage. As mentioned in an earlier blog that meant a 0530 wake up call to get everything broken down, organized and packed up so we could have the bags ready to take outside at 0730. Greg should up on the minuted. ... read more

2 July 2022, Saturday Arrived in Milngavie, the starting point for the West Highland Way. Jet-lag affects one differently on different trips. Having slept little on the flight over to Edinburgh and with a 5 hour time zone change we slept better and longer the first night than last night. Finally got to sleep about 0500 local time and woke to the alarm at 0830. Organizing and packing for the train trip took more than an hour. Have to disconnect and pack the CPAPs; get the cords and adapters for charging the cell phones, watches and computers packed in the appropriate bags or in coats to carry. Thus we only got to our breakfast at about 1000. The standard hot British breakfast consists of sausage (links and blood), ham, broiled tomato halves, hash brown potato patties, ... read more

This blog will be a synopsis of our walk of the West Highland Way in July of 2022. This was the trip planned in 2020 but delayed with COVID issues. Our group has changed over the course of the two years. My wife and I and our friends Jo Finestead and Norma Wiebe and Sandy Clements have walked the Coast to Coast and a few other treks together the last 10-15 years so we will see how age and the terrain treat us on this walk. We left our new home in San Antonio at Blue Skies of Texas, a CCRC, and traveled by car to Dallas-Ft Worth where we stayed with cousin Chuck who had hoped to make the trip but outrageously high airfares forced him to withdraw. Then on to cousins in Fairfield Bay, ... read more

We woke up refreshed after our day of vacation from the vacation. My stomach seemed to suddenly be fine so we looked forward to a good day (and it was.) We found our way to the breakfast room; it was in the subbasement and very small for a hotel with at least 800 rooms. As a follow up to my comment earlier regarding certain types of travelers; if there is one thing we learned in our years and miles of travel, that no matter where we are in the world one thing always remains the same, people no matter where they are from have zero elevator etiquette. As we were going down to breakfast, we first let the man in a wheelchair on, then made sure he was comfortable with us also riding down with him, ... read more

Today was scheduled to be Museum and Sunday Roast Day, it turned out to be sleep and do-nothing day. We had already decided the night before to cancel our Sunday Roast reservation because my stomach was just not going to be up to it. We had cancelled our dinner reservation for tonight earlier in the week, as we anticipated we would be quite full from our Sunday Roast Lunch. None of this happened of course. We did sleep until about 11, then Jerry showered and was going to go to the Huntarian Art Gallery, but by the time he was ready he would have only had an 90-minutes to get there and enjoy the museum. Instead, he went out and about doing some other exploring. He also stopped at a pharmacy to and got some OTC ... read more

Half of the day was on the train from inverness to Glasgow. I had hoped to get all caught up on the blog, but only managed one entry before I could no longer keep my eyes open. For most of the journey we had the entire first-class coach to ourselves. The scenery on the way down was very beautiful through the heart of the highlands. Sleep did win out for Jerry he was so tired his eyes were burning. I nodded off here and there while trying to take in the view. Our hotel here in Glasgow is actually at the train station, but not the station which we arrived. We could have walked, but again the luggage and being tired just screamed taxi. The taxi rank was directly in front of the station, so no ... read more

Another gorgeous day, bright and sunny. After a quick breakfast we were off to drive aroundLock Ness. The trip was mostly a very scenic day and not much to blog about. Pictures are worth a thousand words. We did make a couple of stops: · Loch Ness Centre, the Nessie interpretive center. I very interesting look at the legend and science behind Nessie and the Loch itself. · Urquhart Castle, the site dates back to 500 AD, but the first castle was built in the 12th century. · Invermoriston Falls, on private land but open to visitors · Fort Augustus, city at the end of the Loch and on canals and lochs leading to the Loch. · Suidhe Viewpoint, highest point on the south side of the Loch. You know your in the highlands here. · ... read more

A last-minute change to the itinerary, the original plan was to combine a castle and scotch tour on our way to Inverness our next city on our tour. Instead, we opted to drive along the northern coast of the top of Aberdeenshire to explore a few more potential villages for retirement summers. It was a good decision. It was another beautiful day in Scotland, we are beginning to believe it really doesn’t rain here. Before heading out of town we picked up our laundry that we had dropped off when we first got her, much cheaper and better service than our cleaners in Rhode Island. Then we drove to the Bridge o’Balgowine, up until 1827 the only northern route out of Aberdeen was over the river Don on this single-arch bridge. The first burgh as they ... read more
