On August 19 we drove southeast to visit Abbotsford and Melrose Abbey. Abbotsford, the home of Sir Walter Scott, is a stone baronial mansion with landscaped gardens built in the 1800s . The interior is filled with hundreds of the artifacts that he collected (weapons, taxidermy animal heads, suits of armor, a large library, paintings.) Not far away is Melrose Abbey, a partly ruined monastery that was founded in 1136 by Cistercian monks at the request of King David I of Scotland and was the chief house of that order in the country until the Reformation.... read more

On August 18 we drove south of Edinburgh to visit Rosslyn Chapel and Traquair. Rosslyn Chapel, built in the15th century, was originally going to be part of a large cathedral but the Earl who was having it constructed died and his heirs did not continue the project. It is now famous because part of The da Vinci Code was filmed there. It is known for its gargoyles and interior stone sculptures. Traquair is Scotland's oldest continually inhabited house, dating back over 900 years and still lived in as a family home today. Over the years 27 Scottish kings and queens visited there, including Mary, Queen of Scots.... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » Scotland » Shetland Islands August 8th 2022

To many people on the UK mainland and beyond, the Shetland and Orkney Islands are “somewhere up at the top” of the map of Great Britain. In fact, the Shetland Isles (formerly known as Zetland) are a sub-Arctic Archipelago located in the North Atlantic, as close to Norway as to Aberdeen. Shetland consists of a group of 100 islands with approximately 900 miles of coastline and a population of around 27,000. The Orkney Islands are located six miles north of the Scottish mainland. There are about 70 islands within the Orkney archipelago, 17 of which are inhabited. Both Orkney and Shetland are unique and unlike any other part of Great Britain. They have managed to retain many of their original, unique customs and traditions resulting from their long and eventful history. A Little Bit of History: ... read more

Total chaos (crowd-wise) this week in Edinburgh – Fringe Festival and Tattoo going on, and let’s not forget the crowds migrating north from the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham – probably bringing headcount to half a million bodies at least to this capital city. No thanks, I prefer something more open and quieter, so I opted to go shopping and sightseeing in Queensferry instead. Located 10 miles to the northwest of Edinburgh city center, there are two towns for Queensferry (North and South) which face each other across the Forth. Both towns derive their name from the ferry service established by Queen Margaret in the 11th century, which continued to operate until 1964, when the Road Bridge was opened. South Queensferry sits on the shore in the shadow of the Forth Bridges that cross over to ... read more

During my two weeks in Edinburgh I visited four art museums: The National Portrait Gallery, The Gallery of Modern Art, The Scottish National Gallery and The Royal Scottish Academy. I also took in St Cecilia’s Hall: Concert Room & Music Museum with its wonderful collection of old pianos, harpsichords, etc. When I visited the The Royal Botanic Garden the greenhouses were under renovation but it was still worthwhile.... read more

On August 4 I flew to Edinburgh, Scotland to visit my friend, Ron, take in the Fringe Festival and go on a road trip to the Isle of Skye. On my first day I hiked over Calton Hill, down to the New canton Burial Ground, past Holyroodhouse and the Scottish Parliament into Holyrood Park, then hiked to the top of Arthur’s Seat for the panoramic view of the area. During my stay I visited four art museums, all worth a visit: The National Portrait Gallery, The Gallery of Modern Art, The Scottish National Gallery and The Royal Scottish Academy. The many Fringe Festival venues were spread around the central part of the city in spaces from tiny to large where we saw drama, standup comedy, live music, acrobatics, and the Military Tattoo. There were many musicians, ... read more

Today was our last official day of our Ireland/Scotland tour with Cosmos Tours. After our tradition breakfast buffet, we got on the tour bus and set our for Edinburgh Old Town and New Town. (Our hotel was out of the city center). We had a local tour guide, Kenneth, join our group for an in-depth tour of the city of Edinburgh. Our regular guide, Will, made arrangements for our tour of Edinburgh Castle, where we would meet him at a later time. As we drove around the city I didn’t know which way to look first. There are so many churches, schools, monuments, building, etc. I just took pictures….lots of pictures. Sadly, today was a rainy day so some of the pictures aren’t the best. Many of them won’t be identified because we didn’t know what ... read more

Sunday, 24 July 2022, Day 7 Great Glen Way. Drumnadrochit to Inverness starting at Blackfold meadow again. by All Trails app: 11.6 miles, 4:39 hours, 344 feet elevation gain. By Garmin: 11.64 miles, 4:38 hours, 234 feet elevation gain The morning looked very clear after some heavy rains during the night. Our transfer van picked us up at 0930 for the ride back up to the hill to Blackfold. We started at the same spot as yesterday but went in the opposite direction towards Inverness instead of back to Drumnadrochit. Yesterday was supposed to be 12 miles but it was only 8. Today is supposed to be 9 miles but was actually 11.6. So much for the guidance from the tour operators. Loch Ness Travel provided our shuttle and also was providing our luggage transfer. We had our typical morning…up at 6, luggage to the bus at 6:45, breakfast at 7, load the bus and depart at 8. Today was mostly a travel day we had to get from the Highlands at Strathpeffer to our home for the next 2 days in Edinburgh. Our first stop was a little Victorian town called Pitlochry which is a cute town with lots of shops and restaurants. It is located close to the Cairngorms; the largest national park in the UK, which we drove through and would continue to do so for some time. Pitlochry was our morning bathroom / snack break. Interestingly enough the public toilets didn’t open until 10 am. We arrived at 9:50 so there was a long line!! Our next stop was St Andrews golf course. St. Andrews is the ... read more

Saturday, 23 July 2022, Day 6 Great Glen Way, Blackfold to Drumnadrochit from north to south today. 8 miles, 3 hours 28 min. 439 feet elevation gain by Garmin 8.1 miles, 3:29 hours, 522 feet elevation gain with All Trails App. Today we have Loch Ness Travel provide a shuttle from our hotel to the Blackfold area along the GGW. Jo and I then walked from this point south west along the route back to Drumnadrochit. This broke up the 20 mile route from here to Inverness. It was estimated to be a 12 mile walk. The driver mentioned how glad we should be to be taken up the road of this steep hill. As we drove we saw walkers along the mile and a half section that is along the A82 setting out for Inverness. ... read more
