There is a hill walk just outside of Ullapool, probably only 800 feet or so of elevation gain. However, this "walk" had defeated me twice already. The first time was during my visit in November of '99 - within sight of the summit, I was forced to literally hug the mountain as 100-mph winds threatened to throw me off the side and dash me against the rocks on the way back to town. This was the same day in which a hailstorm left my face scraped and bleeding. Hill 1, Steve 0. The next attempt was in 2001, where we reached the trailhead only to discover the gate locked shut due to the foot and mouth disease outbreak. Hill 2, Steve 0. This time, I was determined for things to be different. I went for my ... read more

After Stirling, we made our way past the Scottish midlands and through the highlands to Culrain. The jagged small mountains were gorgeous - I think Ross' favorite scenery so far. I think people were realizing why Scotland is my favorite place on earth :). We saw some elk, but had no Scottish Highland cattle sightings just yet. It was really cool to go more North than I had been, and it seemed to just get prettier. Sadly it got dark before we reached our destination for the night: Carbisdale Castle. It truely was the best and neatest hostel I had ever stayed in. I LOVE castles :) :) :). It was so fun to explore the castle that night - through narrow hallways and up and down stairs. The library had many interesting books, some ... read more

As you will likely guess the problem with coming from the most remote part of the mainland UK is that it's a pain in the ass to get to. 12hrs drive later, lots of bad (and expensive) service station coffee and some very red eyes and finally I was as far north as I could go...and home. Things are just as mad as ever in Borgie. The farm house sits down a remote track but never-the-less always seems to be full with my brother's farming cronies and other randoms. A thousand old cars and tractors (with various bits removed) lie outside and chickens, dogs and pet lambs all chase each other around outside. While the conversation inside is fixed firmly on shooting deer, poaching salmon and which car my brother is going to buy next. In ... read more

Hello everyone Its really hard to beleive that I have been over here for almost 2 months now- WOW. Over the past 2 weeks I have been up north in the highlands on 2 seperate occasions. 1. Skiing: I'm sure many of you probably had no idea that there was even enough snow up here to ski- well dont worry becuase I didnt know that until 2 weeks ago either. I met a Scottish girl (Ruth) in one of my classes and she kept talking about skiing in the highlands. When she found out that I knew how to ski she invited me to go with her and her boyfriend for the day. So I invited a friend to come with us and we took the 1.5 hour drive upto a place called Glencoe. The drive ... read more

Sorry it took me so long to update my blog but here I am to inform you all of my adventures in the far north of the UK. I returned to my flat at around 8:30am on Monday after a torturous 13-hour bus ride. For those of you that don’t know, I went to the highlands of Scotland. We stayed in a castle that was donated to the Scottish Youth Hostel Association. The castle was said to have a “haunted” room but we didn’t get to stay in it. Scotland was so beautiful! It was so peaceful and calm. The people there were really kind and laid back. We only visited four small towns, well one was a bit larger than the rest but not too much bigger. We had a four-hour wait in Inverness for ... read more

24th August 2005 Sutherland, Scottish Highlands. Day 1 of Skye High Haggis Tour. I left Edinburgh this morning with about twenty other holiday-makers, all bound for the highlands of Scotland and adventures untold (and undoubtedly pre-packaged). We passed the apparently famous Forth Rail and Road Bridges on our way north towards Fythe, stopped briefly in a whiskey distillery outside Pitlochry, then continued northward to Killiecrankie, which I just love to say in a faux-Scots brogue. Kee-li-crrrahnki. At some point during the morning we were cheerfully manipulated into playing a kind of speed-dating game where the people in aisle seats moved systematically along the bus and we each had about three minutes to converse. It was actually quite a laugh, but damned if many of their stories stuck with me. In a stroke of brilliant luck, we ... read more

Mikey is shot down Rachel is seeing someone Drowning in his tears. I didn’t realize Dee was in town last night! I quickly said hello to her on her bus and almost got “trapped.” Bummer, I didn’t realize she was in the Isle of Skye because it would have been cool to hang out one more time. Oh well! Took off about 9AM and went for a grocery stop. We’re currently heading off to another castle after a quick brekkie stop at the Murchison Memorial. A castle stop at Eilean Donan Castle. The Macray’s are still living in the castle but they have tours running through the castle - dining room and bedrooms - and it is quite nicely decorated. The kitchen was pretty cool and creepy at the same time. Cool in the sense that ... read more
