Dear All Greetings from the top of Great Britain! Yay! I made it here, to a place called Thurso, mainland Britain’s northernmost town, at the very top of this island on its northern coast, with amazing views out over the sea towards Orkney. It feels grand to be here, an important geographical place in the British Isles, and I’ve enjoyed very much spending time getting to know this most northerly mainland tip of my country. On Tuesday morning I left the Highlands, taking a 10am train from Carrbridge station, and waving farewell to the beautiful Caingorms National Park. I was heading to Inverness, for a 12-minute changeover of train, hoping that my train wasn’t going to arrive late. It didn’t, and I made the next train, a four-hour two coach ScotRail service, following the most stunning ... read more

Aug.30 ... Rose at 3:30am for 16k ride to Newcastle train station. After a quick coffee, cereal and packed lunch (thank you, cousin), l loaded my bike and was on my way. I quickly learned tree lined offroad bike routes are dark places, and my bike lighting didn't provide much comfort in my rush to meet my train. I took to the roads to reduce anxiety and they were a breeze at this time of day. I made the station with time to spare. Loaded bike onto train and settled in for 12 hour train ride (two transfers) to top of Scotland, through Edinburgh and Inverness. Beautiful scenery, villages, and landscapes (some quite desolate). All seemed efficient and tidy (based on my train travel experience). Young Master Ear Buds, next to me on train, opened up ... read more

Geo: 58.5949, -3.51911Lot of driving today, but again in beautiful weather and fascinating countryside. We loved seeing the mirror-like lochs reflecting the grand mansions, then bare hills and ranges followed by woodlands and green pastures, and heather-covered lands further north. The scenery is all that we'd hoped for!First to Oban Distillery, then to Fort William at one end of the Caledonian Canal, then along the fault line to Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle, then Thurso via Inverness and the top end of Scotland - John O'Groats.... read more

Oh it felt nice to sleep in today. Scratch that - it felt nice just to sleep! The day started sunny, but in true Scottish fashion (especially in the Highlands) that soon changed and it misted for most of the day. Oh mist - I wish it would proper rain if it’s going to do that… it’s horrible for the camera though. I walked from Thurso up to Scrabster - along the beach, the coastline and then up in hills because I had no idea where I was going, so, the normal hiking day for me. I couldn’t help but wonder while overlooking the beach if anyone ever gets to enjoy the beach. It’s end of June here, and it’s only 15 degrees today. But a damp 15 degrees, of course... curious if in July/August they ... read more

I will try to remember all of the things that have happened between our last update and now. We spent 3 fantastic nights in the Cinque Terre. We hiked the hardest part of the trail between the towns, stopped for lunch and then decided that we were done. We met a lot of fantastic people, especially Molli from Philly! We returned to Venice for our last 2 nights in Italy. On the last night we went out dancing...let me just say that I am not ok with the fact that Italian men can move their hips better than I can! Now for a little travel disaster story: So, Hannah and I got up to leave Venice and easily got our train to Milan. However, when we reached Milan we realized that we had no money for ... read more

Geo: 58.5926, -3.52461We took the ferry back to the mainland. The trip was a bit more choppy, but I focused on this blog to keep me from getting to queasy. We had abiout 30 minutes before dinner so I collected my laundry (nicely done, they even presses my undies!) and went to prepare for the morning. Since the hotel that we are staying at tomorrow has no lift or porters, we have to pack an overnight bag and have it ready in the morning. We had dinner tonight at 7:30 at the hotel's restaurant again. I had mainly sat with Barbara and Shirley (the Canadians) most of the day, so I went and sat by myself to see who I would get. I ended up sitting with the 3 sisters and a married couple (all from ... read more

Geo: 58.5926, -3.524611:30-7:00Thurso, ScotlandAfter leaving Inverness, Cherry handed me a small magnet of a painted picture of a thistle. She said that she knew how much I like thistles (not true, I just wanted one in a glass paper weight), so she got it for me. I thanked her. Apparently she is getting the room to herself even during the 2 night stay in Thurso, and then the room will be rotated amongst the three women. We passed over the Cromarty Firth, Loch Fleet (a tidal lake which was at very low tide), the town of Golspie, Neolithic Cairn Laith, Clynesnally Distillery, the town of Brora, and then stopped in the town of Helmsdale at 3:15 p.m. for a short rest stop of 15 minutes. I purchased some postcards and a small stuffed Highland cattle (long ... read more

Saturday, August 4th - Thurso: I go down to breakfast a little later than mom and John and sit at a table with David and George. After about 15 minutes, I give up on ever getting a waiter to take our order, so I finish my cereal and take off for the room. Went to the Orkney Islands, the most northern point in Scotland. We took a 40 minute ferry ride from John O’Groats (Dunnet Head) to South Ronaldsay where we met up with our local driver/tour guide for the day. I’m horrible, I can’t remember his name, but I do remember his accent (in my humble opinion) was impossible to understand. Very Nordic sounding, but with a lot of Scottish too. Mom asked him, at one point, if they did the Highland games ... read more
