Oh it felt nice to sleep in today. Scratch that - it felt nice just to sleep!
The day started sunny, but in true Scottish fashion (especially in the Highlands) that soon changed and it misted for most of the day. Oh mist - I wish it would proper rain if it’s going to do that… it’s horrible for the camera though.
I walked from Thurso up to Scrabster - along the beach, the coastline and then up in hills because I had no idea where I was going, so, the normal hiking day for me.
I couldn’t help but wonder while overlooking the beach if anyone ever gets to enjoy the beach. It’s end of June here, and it’s only 15 degrees today. But a damp 15 degrees, of course... curious if in July/August they get any sun.
The coast walk was lovely - the views of the coast weren’t special by any means, but it was just wonderful to be in the middle of nowhere surrounded only by sheep, the sounds of the waves below and the occasional bird song. I found myself just grinning like an idiot at one point when it randomly hit
me that yes I was back in Scotland, in the damn mist, and I was loving every second of it.
When I came upon the first field of sheep I also giggled to myself - they truly are everywhere here. They aren’t nervous either - they’ll eat right up along the fence. Needless to say I took an embarrassingly large amount of sheep photos today haha. It was brilliant though - it was so rural and quiet that you could *hear* them chewing the grass.
I came upon a lot of dogs too! I love that a lot of people have dogs here - got a lot of kisses and chatted with a few locals. That’s another thing I love in the rural UK - everyone nods and says hello even if they don’t know you. I love it ok.
I got to Scrabster and there was essentially nothing there but a port. I mean I knew it wasn’t a town or anything… but I thought there would be something more than the port yard. That’s ok though, I decided to climb up the cliffside and just continue roaming. The nice thing about hiking along the coast
if you can’t really get lost - you just walk back the way you came.
I ended up in a giant field with about 100 sheep. I’m not even kidding. The best was coming over this little hill and there were 3 sheep in the road just staring me down - I was unsure if it was a pleasant welcome to the ‘hood… or a you better back it up. But as I got closer they scampered off to their herd, so I continued on my way. Had some nice views over the bay and back towards Thurso, so that was certainly worth the trek.
Back in Thurso I hit up the Coop rather than the Tesco because I wanted more local goodies - they didn’t disappoint. I got some treacle scones (which were to die for, ok) and these raspberry and cream fluffy biscuit things were were also amazing - can’t beat finding baked goods from the local bakery.
That was my day - I roamed around the town as well, nothing much here really. It didn’t help that it’s Sunday which meant everything was closed. Ah, rural life.
